Beneath the Eiffel Tower lies a little-known underground complex with a remarkable military history. The tower was originally intended to be temporary, with Gustave Eiffel facing a 1909 deadline that could have seen his controversial masterpiece dismantled and sold for scrap. To save it, Eiffel turned the tower into something far more practical: a giant antenna for wireless communication.
In 1909, a secret underground military facility was constructed beneath the South Pillar to house radio operators and telegraph equipment. During World War I, the operation expanded into an intelligence hub intercepting German communications, while the tower later became one of Europe’s earliest public broadcasting stations. Today, the underground complex remains largely off-limits, with parts of it used for storage and staging beneath one of the world’s most famous landmarks.
