00:00what's up guys please if you don't mind subscribe like share and comment and will not become a
00:05member in this video we're gonna try to do what one of the viewers requested which is installing
00:12kde on slackware there are two methods to install it the first one is during the the installation
00:19you choose the bundle of kde and it should install for you the second way is the one that i'm
00:27gonna
00:27follow here some of the steps need to be run manually in case you didn't choose during
00:35the setup initial setup of slackware some others even if you chose to install from the medium of
00:46slackware you still need to run these commands after the command that i'm gonna run to
00:56get kde's desktop manager installed and running on your not installed but running at every boot
01:05so we run slack package install kde it's in the official repositories and in the official or
01:15in the main repositories you find it as a pack as a bundle of packages it should work for you
01:22like this
01:23no need for any third-party tools nor any other extra configurations
01:49what we're gonna do now is the equivalent of choosing the set of packages that are labeled kde
01:59during the setup of slackware and then letting it install so these steps are the same i guess i'm fine
02:09with all these packages i'll let them all install i need to make sure that sddm is included
02:32yes it's not yes it's not so far it's not
02:43it's okay we may install it manually later let's press enter here since okay is highlighted
02:52and it should install for us i thought sddm is not included but when i run which sddm as you
03:00can see
03:00here it is already installed that's why it wasn't included in the bundle apparently the setup is done
03:09there are some packages that i saw that they didn't install due to the md5 some error i hope they
03:18don't
03:19affect the whole setup of the bundle of this desktop environment here it says that it made
03:25a new version for slack package plus configuration file i would keep the old one that's why i would press
03:31uppercase k and enter here here it tells about the packages that failed to install like this one this may
03:41affect the whole package the whole desktop environment we will see anyway we have a bunch of them that failed
03:50to install
03:51the fatal error let's see what we got xwm config we should select here yes it didn't appear for us
04:05so let's clear out the screen add on update gpg gpg assuming it is the
04:20signature error and this may solve it let's see
04:28and then let's try again slack package install kde those packages that fail to install should install again
04:45it may be better to choose kde during the installation of slackware
04:52rather than struggling with these errors here i will press enter
05:01yes it's still the same i guess the error disappeared i should have run a command
05:09that updates the repositories which is like package update like this i run it already here
05:15and you can see that for the first packages like this one it no longer complains about md5 sum so
05:25please run
05:26the command slack package update before you run slack package install kde let me show you where i run it
05:38so in case it's in case it's in case it's in case it's in case it allowed me yes here
05:43is a slack package install kde and here is the output of the command
05:47slack package update i will come back once this finishes
05:55the missing packages the missing packages the missing packages are already installed here i press uppercase k
06:00and then let's try to run xwm config and see what we have here it is kde maybe i didn't
06:10scroll up to reach it
06:12before that's why probably it didn't appear first if you just wanted to have kde without
06:22having a specific session
06:26be it x11 or wayland all you have to do is to run xwm config
06:31and then run start x and you're good to go that's actually x11
06:40here you we try to login as plain user rather than the root user i will try to run start
06:48x to
06:50test the new configurations
06:57all these steps that i run except for xwm config can be replaced by selecting kde desktop environment during the
07:12installation of slackware however in case you forgot just run these steps and you will be good to go
07:23for x11
07:28let's hope it doesn't do like gnome for gnome i'm happy that some of you
07:35reported that they succeeded to get it working for me the culprit of this
07:43whole mess that i get and the desktop environment not working can be
07:49running slackware itself on virtual machine if i do it probably on real hardware it may work
07:57i may need here to reset
08:01yes
08:02yes i rebooted the system i have here black screen with no cursor
08:15unlike gnome which gave me a cursor here i have a full black screen with nothing when i try to
08:24run start x
08:25and xwconfig is configured to run kde let's switch to root here and see our xwm config
08:38yes
08:40cancel let's clear out the screen
08:42so in case you want to have x11 for your slackware and you don't have any and you wouldn't and
08:50you wouldn't have any further configurations
08:54nor switch to wayland you're good to go and i believe it's gonna work either by
08:59selecting kde during the installation of slackware itself
09:03or by running all the steps that i have shown you never mind
09:09this black screen there must be something wrong with it
09:13and in case you want to have
09:18kde with wayland let me show you what you need to do next
09:24we go to slash etc slash init tab we switch we scroll down this one
09:37and here we change this one to four which means enabling the graphical user interface to be the default
09:48run level i will save and exit the only thing that you change here is this number it must be
09:57four
09:58and then
10:01you go to slash etc
10:04slash rc dot d
10:07slash rc dot four
10:12scroll down
10:14we need to make sure that sddms block of code this if statement is
10:24in the top
10:26mostly under this echo
10:30i copied it and i will paste it here
10:33we save and exit
10:36we may now reboot the system to see how
10:39it boots into the graphical user interface and starts sddm
10:45hence we may be able to choose kde with wayland
10:50i forgot to make that script executable
10:54which i will do now
10:57so before rebooting the system
11:00run the commands that i'm gonna run now
11:03which are to mod
11:05plus x
11:06slash etc
11:08slash rc dot d
11:10slash rc dot four
11:12like this
11:13and then
11:15we run init
11:16for
11:22or probably we reboot
11:26the issue may be solved by running these commands
11:39like this
11:40and then user add
12:02like this
12:03like this
12:05and then
12:05yeah
12:05and then
12:33see
12:33we don't know
12:33we need to do
12:33and we need to release
12:36This command like this, enter.
12:50This command like this, enter.
12:51This command like this, enter.
12:57This command.
12:57This command, enter.
12:58This command, enter.
13:04This command to enter.
13:06This command.
15:08executable and then rebooting the system or init4 and it should work.
15:30Try with this a fresh installation of Slackware 15.
15:38As root, of course.
15:45Any tab.
16:29And this one I selected SDDM, of course, I selected KDE, sorry.
16:36I copied that one, I'll paste it here, save and exit to mod plus x slash etc slash rc dot
16:48d slash rc dot four.
16:54Here is the virtual screen of this virtual machine.
17:00Let's run init4.
17:10And we should get the desktop manager, yes, here it is.
17:18And we can see that Wayland is an option here since it comes pre-configured, pre-installed as long as
17:29you chose KDE in Slackware 15.
17:33If you want to get it, select this one, type the user password and login.
17:40You should be good to go, just like me here.
17:43And we are running Wayland.
17:45This is for a full desktop environment.
17:48In case you want to have only one application, I may make a video about it in the future.
17:53You install a piece of software called Kage and you start your Wayland application.
17:59We can see that our Wayland based KDE or Plasma desktop environment is working.
18:10Let's take a look at Firefox for instance.
18:17And it works as you can see.
18:22Anyway, if you wanted to have only KDE or Plasma, you didn't install it.
18:28During the installation of Slackware, simply run the commands in the beginning of the video.
18:35If you wanted to have stdm start and at every boot, let me show you that it does reboot.
18:47Do the steps that I just showed you.
18:49And then if you want to have the full desktop environment run in Wayland,
18:56select it in the menu that I just showed you and I will show you again now.
19:01Before I finish the video, which is anytime soon,
19:05I think that you may like to watch the videos that I made about the file transfer tools.
19:13There is for instance a protocol called ATA over Ethernet.
19:17It is somehow legacy or abandoned by many people and still also maintained it from the other side.
19:27I believe it's a fascinating protocol. I made that video about it and I may make other videos.
19:35I will put the video in the suggested videos at the end, try to take a look at it.
19:43I made also a video about 9P file protocol, which is related to
19:55Plan 9, the operating system you may need to take a look at.
20:00So here make sure in this menu to select the one that you like either Wayland or X11 or even
20:07XFCE.
20:08Type your password here and you will be good to go and have the full Wayland desktop environment
20:16running flawlessly on your Slackware. I'm signing out and peace.
