00:00hello everyone please don't forget to subscribe like share and comment and will not become a
00:05member i received the comment asking me to show how to set up slackware current among other things
00:13so i thought of showing you such thing slackware current is the testing branch of slackware
00:20besides the official release which is the stable one and it is 15 as of the time of recording
00:27this video i looked at online and found two methods to get slackware current the first one is
00:35from the official stable release of slackware you go to as root of course you go to slash etc
00:44slash slack package or slack pkg and then slash slack pkg.conf you go to this file
00:56you scroll down
01:01until you reach the mirrors oh not this file sorry uh there is a file called mirrors which is this
01:11one
01:13from there you decide whether you want your version to be the stable one
01:16or the current one here is the section of the stable one slackware 64 for 64 bits 15.0 the
01:29official
01:30stable release you scroll down you skip all of these
01:36and then you find slackware current all you have to do is to enable
01:41one of these mirrors let's say this one
01:46by uncommenting it like this in case you have another mirror from the main stable release you need to
01:54disable it by commenting it let's say you got this mirror you chose this mirror to be your official mirror
02:03later uh later when you want to enable slackware current you need to command this one and then enable
02:10the current mirror at least one i don't think you are allowed to have more but you need to have
02:18at least like you need to have a current branch mirror you save and exit and then you run slack
02:27pkg update
02:34so you we got here a confirmation whether we want to use the slackware current
02:40and it tells us what it is exactly we press here y and enter and it should
02:48refresh the keys and the repositories and later there are some other commands that we need to run to
02:55get it fully running after running slack pkg update we can run slack pkg upgrade upgrade dash all like this
03:09enter
03:29we got a list of the packages that are gonna be installed in order to upgrade the older versions
03:37here they are you may need to take a look at them in case you wanna
03:43prevent any of them from being upgraded and of course this is the testing branch
03:51aka current it would give you almost the latest and greatest if i'm not mistaken or at least something
03:58newer than the versions that were meant for the stable branch or the official main branch for instance
04:096.18 is not the main version of the kernel that is officially installed
04:17we can see that it is not here name dash a and it is 5.15
04:24as well as in the video where i upgrade i upgraded the kernel of slackware 15 the official release
04:31it kept upgrading the version 5.15 and it gave me a newer version instead of going to
04:38another major release so here we choose ok and it should convert the whole system to become current by
04:46upgrading to those versions it should take some time though slack package has been upgraded so we need to start
04:56the upgrade process again i mean run this command again and keep up with it
05:03here we press enter as long as ok is highlighted
05:09here it tells to press enter and tells me that there is a new version of the kernel
05:16enter here also press enter again for me i would keep the old files and consider the new files later
05:25or probably not since we have
05:31a different branch of slackware i guess i will choose o to overwrite all all old files with the new
05:40ones
05:40the old files the old files will be stored with the suffix dot orange okay so i i chose uppercase
05:47o enter
05:51since we updated the configuration file with newer ones we have to choose our mirror again which
06:03in case it's not correct i mean the mirror is not the best one or it's not probably the nearest
06:09one you may
06:10face a problem of slower downloads that's why it took me longer time in my case i guess i will
06:20choose this one
06:22since pkgs.org always points to it it's not the nearest one to me though let's save and exit and
06:30try to run this command again
06:33this error usually happens or happen to me at least to at least once when i was trying to switch
06:41to slackware current
06:43when the package didn't finish downloading let's try to
06:49okay
06:52i guess no no need to worry about it during the process of the conversion from the official or the
07:01main
07:02slackware version to the
07:05the current one we saw that we have a new kernel which needs to be
07:12used in the next boot we run this command to generate its init ram disk
07:23that should be dash r dash k
07:28and then the version here it can be 6.12.40 we need to find the version first i will
07:40show you how
07:41it should be by using this command ls slash usr slash src slash linux and that one is dash al
07:54there is a symbolic link to the version that we are using so the command becomes
08:026.18.40
08:06should be like this
08:18and then we run we run it by pressing enter and then we take this command to generate our init
08:28ram disk
08:28enter once the command is ready to be executed
08:38you need to have a new entry for the new kernel in your bootloader
08:44for the case of lilo you run lilo i don't have
08:51i don't have bios or mbr here i have uefi for which i need to use elilo
09:01simply by running this command or as bin elilo
09:08like this
09:11i guess
09:14elilo was removed
09:18for the bootloader we run grab install slash dev slash sda
09:30for slackware if it is efi you don't need to specify more arguments
09:36for slackware currently you no longer use elilo that's why we need to install grab
09:43and then the second command is like this grab and dash mk config dash o slash boot slash
09:53grab slash grab dot cf
09:59cfg like this enter
10:06and we got our
10:11new version of the kernel which is 6.18.40 let's reboot the system
10:32and we've got
10:35many versions here let's go with the newest one to make sure that it works
10:40the version of grab is 2.14
10:46this conserves the older versions of the kernel in case the newer ones do not work or have any
10:53issue you can simply roll back to the older ones
10:58here is our slackware working let's see the version of the kernel
11:046.18.40 let's run neofetch
11:10like this
11:13and it is the current version as you can see the current branch
11:23and uses the kernel 6.18.40 there is a little problem
11:31with the network management software which is in our case network manager let's try to get it running
11:41so we have rc dot network
11:49manager all our case
11:53start
11:58all right we cannot start the service of network
12:01manager we got this error we will have to resort to a piece of software that i found which is
12:08dhc client
12:11which we will try to run now
12:15with the interface in my case it's at zero we can check it by running ipa so let's run dhc
12:26dhc client at zero
12:30at zero like this
12:33let's check again ipa and we got an ip address if we ping google
12:41we will we will see yes it's what it works so let's try to update again
12:53upgrade all
12:56yes we got our system up to date with all the packages that's the first method for
13:03getting slackware current
13:06for the second method we will make a dedicated video for it it's different than this one
13:12i'm signing out and see you
13:16you
