00:04member i have here slackware 15 i'm trying to upgrade its packages and one of the packages
00:11that it is trying to upgrade is the kernel as you can see it is pulling the package here it
00:18pulled the kernel modules and this is also another package that's related to the kernel
00:32so we let it upgrade then i'll show you some extra steps to get the newly
00:39upgraded kernel installed and working successfully on your slackware machine during the system upgrade
00:48i've got this message saying that your kernel image was updated and your slash etc slash lilo.conf
00:55indicates the use of an init rd for at least one of your kernels be sure to regenerate
01:02the init rd for the new kernel and handle any needed updates to your bootloader
01:08says also that i need to press the enter key to continue which i will do now
01:18this one tells about some of the old configuration files that got some updates let's press enter
01:26i will press k and enter here you may need to read this very well and decide very carefully what
01:32you
01:32want to do with the old and new configuration files the old versions and the new ones
01:41the new kernel update is updated after running the command slack pkg upgrade dash all this one as you can
01:50see
01:51there is also another command which is uh this one this does similar job to the one that i was
01:59running but with some differences i'm not fully sure of
02:05whether you updated your system with the first or with the second one
02:11so after uh running slack pkg or slack package upgrade all or slack package install new
02:21and making sure that there is a new kernel you're ready to run the next command which is
02:30like this
02:41dash r dash k and the version here let me show you how to find the version you go to
02:51slash usr slash src
02:55uh linux here uh it should be like this with these arguments for the command and you can see that
03:07it is 5.15.209 if you wanna prove that it's a newer version than the one that your system
03:16is running you can
03:17run your name dash a or dash v and you can see that i'm running 5.15.9 dot 19
03:25so we uh run this script
03:31like this and the version should be 5.15.209 enter
03:41okay let's check our boot partition or folder slash boot i guess it's this one let's uh check it like
03:53this al
03:59initial init rd ram disk
04:11no sorry uh that this command that i just run here
04:17shows us how to generate the relevant init ram disk for our slackware and gives us the output that
04:28we need to run to generate the relevant init ram disk running this command this one over here helps us
04:39prove that the init ram disk is going to be generated this one was made the 5th of april
04:48today it's uh july the 28th so if we run this command
04:54the old init ram disk which is this one over here is going to be replaced with the new newer
05:00one
05:04so if we run this command again
05:09we can see that it's as or with the date of today's date and then we can run a lilo
05:24or lilo to generate the boot menu like this all right let's uh see again the version of the kernel
05:37that
05:37we're running and it is 5.15.19 you may need to take a look at your uh slash etc
05:46slash elilo dot conf in case
05:50you're using uefi the same here and if you're using uefi you run a lilo if you're using mbr or
06:00bios you run lilo
06:02you may need to take a look at the configuration file of slash etc slash elilo dot conf or
06:09slash etc slash lilo dot conf in case you have any configurations to change
06:14in my case i have nothing to change
06:18and after doing these steps which are uh generating the init ram disk update in your kernel
06:27and running lilo or elilo to generate the boot menu you can reboot the system
06:33uh remember that running the command
06:41this command
06:44needs you to run this command afterwards it gives you the output that you need
06:52to run in order to get your init ram disk now let's reboot the system
07:01let's say here as you can see this virtual machine
07:06our slackware system is rebooted if we try to run your name dash a we can see that we're using
07:13the newest
07:15kernel so far the init ram disk that is generated using the native slackware tools can be also generated
07:24using drakat since drakat can work on slackware i made a video on how to do it you can replace
07:30the steps
07:30of generating the init ram disk here with the steps over there i'll put it in the description or it
