Health authorities are calling for calm over concerns a lifesaving device used in the state's ambulances could be faulty. The Therapeutic Goods Administration says the Corpuls defibrillators should still be used despite ordering the temporary suspension of future sales.

00:02For someone having a cardiac arrest, they can mean the difference between life and death.
00:07This is one of the corporal's defibrillators being demonstrated on a dummy,
00:11but paramedics say when it really counts, the devices don't always perform.
00:15Defibrillators not delivering shocks, cancelling shocks, turning off halfway through resuscitations.
00:23And deliver the shock.
00:25An investigation by 60 Minutes and 9 Newspapers has uncovered more than 1,200 faults
00:30with some corporals devices used by NSW Ambulance in the last year alone.
00:35But officials say most weren't serious.
00:38Those technical issues go from clips and clasps to connectors.
00:44We're not talking about a large number of defibrillation failures.
00:50However, the Therapeutic Goods Administration says it is investigating reports of unexpected
00:55device shutdowns of the corporals 3 and 3T, as well as unwanted reboots during use.
01:01It's announced a three-month pause on the sale of those items.
01:05Whilst the suspension is in place, existing devices already in ambulances and healthcare facilities
01:10can continue to be used and serviced, but no new devices can be supplied.
01:15In a statement, Device Technologies, which sells the defibrillators, says it's already taken
01:20action to address the reported shutdown and rebooting issues, and it's informed customers
01:25about software updates.
01:27There is no reports that any of the deaths or serious harm have been from any of the devices
01:34in NSW.
01:37While its investigations are continuing, the TGA says defibrillators used in ambulances
01:42are safe to use.
01:46They can manage to understand the problem of their use.
