00:20Iran is demanding payback from Ukraine after a deadly drone strike in the Caspian Sea,
00:27and Tehran says an apology is not enough.
00:31On July 25, 2026, Ukrainian forces launched long-range drone strikes in the Caspian Sea
00:38as part of operations targeting Russian military logistics and supply routes linked to Iran.
00:46Ukraine said the strikes targeted Russian military assets and vessels allegedly involved
00:51in transporting military-related cargo between Iran and Russia.
00:57But Iran says one of its commercial vessels was caught in the attack.
01:02Iranian officials identified the vessel in reports as the Ana, or Ane,
01:07and said it was carrying civilian cargo near the Volga river mouth.
01:12The strike reportedly caused an explosion, killing a 23-year-old Iranian sailor, Nima Maradi, and injuring others.
01:21Tehran immediately condemned the attack.
01:23Iran summoned Ukraine's charge d'affaires and described the strike as a hostile and criminal act,
01:31arguing that it violated international law.
01:34Iranian foreign minister Abbas Aragachy also warned that the attack could not simply be ignored.
01:41But Ukraine offered a different explanation.
01:44Ukrainian officials said the strike was not intended to target civilians or civilian vessels.
01:51During a phone call with Aragachy, Ukrainian foreign minister Andriy Sabiga emphasized that Ukraine's military operations are directed against Russia
02:01and its military supply networks.
02:04Iran, however, says that explanation does not settle the matter.
02:10Aragachy said he was assured that the attack was unintentional and that Kyiv did not want escalation.
02:16Iran also made clear that it does not want a wider confrontation.
02:21But Tehran insists there must be restitution for the losses.
02:25And the demand became even stronger in August.
02:30On August 10th, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagai said Ukraine had acknowledged the incident, even while describing it as
02:39unintentional.
02:41Iran, he said, expects Ukraine to compensate for the losses.
02:45And then came the warning.
02:47Bagai said that Ukraine does not provide compensation.
02:51Iran will seek compensation itself.
02:54The dispute is particularly sensitive because the Caspian Sea has become an important logistical route connecting Iran and Russia.
03:03Ukraine has accused vessels in the region of helping move military-related supplies to Russia,
03:09while Tehran maintains that the vessel hit in this incident was a civilian ship.
03:14The two sides, therefore, remain sharply divided over what happened, what the vessel was carrying, and who bears responsibility.
03:22There has been no public confirmation that Ukraine has agreed to pay compensation.
03:28For now, Tehran is pushing diplomacy, but keeping the pressure on Kyiv.
03:34The bigger concern is that a strike intended to disrupt Russian supply routes could create a completely new confrontation between
03:42Iran and Ukraine.
