00:01The Immigration Department has suspended the issuance of Malaysian international passports
00:06with validity periods exceeding 10 years following reports of travellers facing check-in problems
00:12with some airlines overseas.
00:15Its Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shahban said on Wednesday that affected passport holders
00:20would be issued replacement passports free of charge with a maximum validity of 10 years.
00:26He said the International Civil Aviation Organisation had confirmed there were no international
00:34restrictions on passports valid for more than 10 years.
00:38However, several Malaysian passport holders with longer validity periods had encountered
00:43difficulties during check-in with some airlines abroad.
00:47Zakaria said the decision to standardise the maximum passport validity at 10 years was aimed
00:53at preventing confusion over the additional six-month validity requirement, which had been
00:58interpreted differently by some airlines.
01:01He said affected passport holders would be given priority for replacement while the department
01:07would issue notification letters to all airlines to facilitate Malaysian travellers affected
01:14by the issue overseas.
01:16Zakaria added that the suspension will remain in effect until the matter is resolved.
