Iran vows to blow U.S. power grids in a massive cyber retaliatory attack if Washington resumes strikes, according to a warning from IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi.

Mohebbi warned that renewed attacks on Iran could put U.S. power plants, energy transmission lines, computer systems and global internet-connected infrastructure at risk.

The warning has raised fears that any future escalation between the U.S. and Iran could extend beyond missiles and drones and into cyber warfare and critical infrastructure attacks.

But there is an important caveat: the full scale of Iran’s claimed ability to disrupt U.S. and global infrastructure has not been independently established. The remarks are being viewed primarily as a warning and deterrence message.

Could Iran’s next retaliation target America’s power grid and digital infrastructure? Watch the full report for the latest developments.

01:22References to U.S. computer systems and Internet connected infrastructure
01:26have been widely interpreted as a warning of potential cyber attacks
01:31or disruption of critical infrastructure.
01:34Iran has long viewed cyber capabilities as an asymmetric weapon,
01:39and Iranian-linked actors have previously been accused of targeting critical infrastructure,
01:45including water, energy, and industrial control systems.
01:49U.S. cybersecurity officials have also warned about the threat posed by Iranian-linked cyber actors
01:56to critical infrastructure.
01:57But there is an important caveat.
02:00There is no independent evidence that Iran currently has the ability or intention
02:05to carry out attacks on the enormous scale described in the warning.
02:10For now, the statement appears to serve primarily as a deterrent message.
