00:02Kate Sylvia died in December 2021 after she started experiencing a stabbing head pain,
00:08slurred speech and vomiting. An ambulance took her to an intermediate care centre at Sefton
00:13Park in Adelaide's North, which operates as one of SA Health's hospital avoidance clinics.
00:18A doctor gave Miss Sylvia fluids, aspirin and was told to sleep it off in a dark room,
00:24despite the 32-year-old's mother raising concerns about her daughter's continued slurred speech.
00:30Miss Sylvia's condition worsened and she was brought to hospital the following day.
00:35Outside of court, the 32-year-old's mother, Catherine Sylvia, said her daughter was a beautiful soul.
00:41I think the main takeaway is, you know, clinicians need to listen to family.
00:48When you think things are not quite right, they need to be sure that they listen.
00:52The deputy coroner found the ambulance service should have correctly assessed her symptoms
00:57and taken her straight to hospital. It was also found Miss Sylvia should have received a more
01:03in-depth neurological exam at the hospital avoidance centre and she could have been
01:07transferred directly to the emergency department if the doctor had placed more weight on her mother's concerns.
