00:00How did West and East Germany reunite?
00:02After World War II, Germany was split into the democratic West Germany,
00:06ruled by the Allies, and the communist East Germany, ruled by the USSR.
00:12Soon, life became very different depending on which Germany you lived in.
00:16West Germany saw economic growth, rising wages, and greater freedoms.
00:21In East Germany, economic growth was slower,
00:23but people had guaranteed jobs and more economic security,
00:27while freedom of speech and travel were very limited.
00:30This led many Germans to flee to the West,
00:33prompting the USSR to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961.
00:37The Wall remained for decades,
00:39and many began to believe Germany would remain divided forever.
00:44However, when Gorbachev came to power in the USSR in 1985,
00:48communist countries were allowed to choose their own path.
00:52Massive protests followed, and in 1989, people crossed the Berlin Wall,
00:57and Germany finally reunited in 1990.
