00:30Onur, good to have you with us. The latest. What do we know about the Stittford Tat sort of remarks
00:37between Iran and the United States?
00:42Well, Abir, as you just mentioned, Trump has come up with this new list of demands, which basically center around
00:49his demand for reparations from Iran.
00:51This was, on the face of it, in response to repeated remarks by various Iranian officials that the Islamic Republic
01:00is seeking reparations for war damages from the U.S.
01:05for the deal to reopen the Hormuz Strait to materialize, even before talks with the U.S. and others on
01:14more contentious issues, such as a nuclear file, can even begin.
01:18Now, Trump's frustration, he says, comes from the fact that these demands were never made as part of the official
01:25negotiations, but instead informally floated by Iranian officials,
01:29which he said was the reason why he's now seeking reparations from Iran in response.
01:35On the other hand, it also shows frustration building up in Washington, D.C.
01:40Just the other day, President Trump had said that he was going to let the economic pressure to do the
01:45work, so to speak,
01:46and basically undermine the Iranian government.
01:49But it shows that his frustration is growing because his tone is changing every day.
01:57So given that tone change, Honor, how realistic are we, how far are we from a deal to reopen the
02:03Strait of Hormuz?
02:04Because it does feel like we're getting further away from this every single day with those remarks from either side,
02:10really.
02:12Well, these surely will imperil the diplomatic channel, whatever shape it really is in at the moment.
02:19We know that Iran and Oman were talking, and the main reason is because these demands will almost certainly be
02:25rejected by the Iranian government.
02:27It will not be even taken seriously.
02:29And, yes, it will further prolong the process.
02:33Just to remind our viewers, this preliminary deal on the reopening of Hormuz was expected to be finalized just about
02:42a week ago.
02:43At least that was the expectations for American officials.
02:46A week on, it still hasn't.
02:47And with the kind of comments that we're seeing out of Washington, D.C., it's hard to expect an imminent
02:53breakthrough to reopen the Strait.
