Inside Nike’s Opening: Young Athletes Embrace Identity Amid Fame and Pressure
Transcript
00:00I always had a dream of being in the opening.
00:03As a young kid, I used to watch the one-on-ones and stuff,
00:06so just having the opportunity to be on the opening is huge.
00:09I didn't even think I was going to get invited at all.
00:11I wound up getting called by one of the directors over there at the opening,
00:15Brian Stump, told me I was invited, and I was shocked.
00:19I was so excited.
00:20I thought it was like a highly DB far-achiever thing.
00:23I didn't think they took no running back, no linebackers.
00:25But when I got invited again for that one in Oregon, I'm like,
00:28oh, I get to be with all the top dogs and not just a wide-achiever DB thing.
00:32I'm going to make a name for myself.
00:34Even though I already have a big name, I'm going to make it even more
00:36and show how best I can be and how good of a linebacker I am.
00:40It's helped me in many ways, holistically, physically, mentally.
00:43We did yoga, and we talked to a mental coach.
00:46We also did some aspects of recovery that helped my body
00:50and just know that, you know, I'm healthy and I can just be great
00:54and perform what I need to do on the field.
00:56My biggest takeaway is, like, it helped me build my strength on, like,
01:00the little muscles that you probably miss in the school room
01:02and, like, your reaction time and your agility on the field
01:05that helps you in real life.
01:07And, like, teach you how to be a better man in real life form
01:10and just always take care of your body.
01:13Do the little things, if that's what matters.
01:15Show up on time, do the work that you have to do
01:18and just grind out and you'll learn over time.
01:21The work you put in and, like, how much you really love the sport
01:24will take you how far you can go.
01:27Yeah, the Nike opening program has taught me, like, to be more open.
01:30No matter where you are, just be open.
01:32People, you will find connections no matter what.
01:35Nike is a big company and just to be able to come back
01:40and give back to the youth is definitely a blessing.
01:43I'm not taking it for granted.
01:45It's also an opportunity for me to realize what Nike is doing
01:49and also, when I get to that level, to be able to give back
01:52and give back to the younger generation that is underneath me
01:57and the people that care about me.
01:59In college, I kind of want to major in audiology.
02:02It's the hearing-impaired stuff.
02:03That's what I am.
02:04I'm hearing impaired.
02:05I have high frequency hearing loss,
02:06so I want to help kids that are hard of hearing
02:08that play football and that it's possible to do it.
02:10I would tell Nike LA, thank you for inviting me.
02:12Thank you for shooting me with the best time probably in my life.
02:16Never, but without being with Nike ever.
02:19It's a fun experience, one lifetime experience.
02:21Don't miss it.
02:22If you get invited, go.
02:24Don't skip it and say, oh, I'm too good.
02:26Don't ever think you're too good.
02:27Go to it.
02:28Just my biggest takeaway is always be who you are,
02:32no matter what, no matter the game.
02:34We've talked about on and off the field things
02:36and all the problems, all the problems on the field and off the field.
02:40It comes from who you are and what you think about.
02:44So just at the end of the day, just be who you are
02:45and you should be all right with what you produce.
02:49Thanks, guys.
02:50See you next time.
02:51Bye.
02:52Bye.
02:54Bye.
