A Gila Monster is a striking venomous lizard known for its heavy body, bead-like scales, and bold black-and-orange or pink patterns. Native to the deserts and dry regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, it spends much of its life hidden underground to escape extreme heat.
Gila monsters are slow-moving predators that feed on eggs, young birds, small mammals, reptiles, and other available prey. They store fat in their thick tails, helping them survive long periods when food is scarce. Unlike snakes, they deliver venom by biting and holding onto their target while venom flows through grooves in their teeth.
