Hidden in the Aral Sea, Vozrozhdeniya Island (Aralsk-7) was a top-secret Soviet biological weapons testing site. Scientists tested anthrax, plague, smallpox and other pathogens in the open air. Hundreds of tons of anthrax were later buried here.
Then the Aral Sea disappeared. The island became part of the mainland. The natural quarantine was gone.
