Former NBA first-round pick Enes Kanter Freedom has declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft, saying he believes he meets the league’s current eligibility requirements. Freedom, who has not played in the NBA since 2022, made the announcement in a social media post, framing it as a challenge to the WNBA’s policies on eligibility and self-identification.

Freedom said, “If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.”

He added, “My team and I have carefully reviewed the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and government framework surrounding self identification and inclusion.”

According to Freedom, “Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA Draft in May 2027.”

He emphasized that his intention was not to insult anyone, stating, “I am definitely not here to mock, make fun of, or disrespect any community or personal choices.”

Freedom concluded, “I am simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone - the rules that represent the very values many WNBA players and coaches have publicly advocated for.”

He ended his announcement by saying, “See you at training camp.”
