00:06The Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre are delighted that the
00:11Shell Harbour Civic Centre are hosting an art exhibition we are throughout the
00:16month of August. This exhibition is showing many artworks that women who
00:22have experienced domestic and sexual violence have created when they attend
00:26our service for healing and recovery support. These artworks and sculptures
00:31are beautiful. There is a theme of nature right throughout the exhibition which
00:37points to the ways in which we experience healing in nature and we feel
00:42grounded and at peace. We invite everyone to come down and take a look.
00:47Hi I'm Zainab Testoni from Soul Play Studios in Gerringong and this sculpture
00:55here is something that we've been working on over the course of about four
00:58months at the Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre and the beauty of the
01:04sculpture is that each piece is made by a different person and the whole point of
01:11the sculpture is to represent resilience and strength so that when we're
01:15thinking about clay and working with clay if you add water to it it just
01:19disintegrates back into clay but the minute we fire the clay in a kiln it
01:24becomes stronger and it's very stone like and that was the purpose in creating this
01:29sculpture by working with women who have experienced quite a lot of things in
01:34their life. The beauty of the clay is it just allows people to arrive settle
01:40their nervous system the tactile nature of it gives people an opportunity to
01:45just relax and not be afraid of making mistakes and just enjoying the process and
01:51through the process we end up with a beautiful artwork that becomes a
01:56collaborative artwork it's a talking point even whilst we're working on it and
02:01people are discussing what kinds of mark making they should make or whether it
02:05should be square or round or all those sorts of discussions that we have in order
02:10to create something beautiful and a collective kind of sculpture that represents
02:16all of us when you put it all together we're all different and yet at the same
02:21time we are unique as one one beautiful kind of universe basically that we're all
02:29together we're all in this together the the diversity the the kind of inclusivity
02:35that we have by just being in in something together and relaxing into the
02:40process of working with clay.
