00:10edging out moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens in what turned out to be a much closer race than many expected.
00:16El-Sayed declared victory by telling supporters, quote, we shook up the world.
00:20The former Detroit health official was backed by some of the biggest names on the left,
00:25including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
00:28Now, his win is being viewed as a major test of whether the progressive wing of the Democratic Party can
00:33compete and win in a critical swing state.
00:36El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers in November in a race that Democrats consider essential to their hopes
00:42of winning back control of the U.S. Senate.
00:44With more than $80 million spent, the contest became the most expensive Democratic Senate primary in American history.
