Defence Minister Richard Marles has announced a $700 million investment in long-range air-to-air missiles as Australia prepares to examine its civil defence readiness for the first time since World War II.

00:00Today we are announcing an FMS case with the United States.
00:04We are purchasing up through 450 Joint Air Force Tactical Missiles.
00:12These are the latest generation of air-to-air missiles,
00:16which will greatly enhance our Air Force's capability.
00:21Importantly, they have a longer range than the current air-to-air missiles that we are using.
00:26These missiles will be installed on all of our mighty planes,
00:31that is our Super Hornets, our Railers and our Air 35s.
00:36They will be operating on those platforms soon.
00:39This is a more than $700 billion purchase,
00:43so it's a really significant purchase to upgrade the capability of our Air Force.
