Defence Minister Richard Marles says Australia needs to invest greater resources in defence, in an effort to become more self-reliant. Speaking at the National Press Club today, he outlined government plans to spend an extra $53 billion on defence over the next decade, bringing spending to three-percent of GDP.

00:01And as a nation, we will need to invest greater resources in our defence than we historically

00:07Middle powers that don't take on more responsibility for their own security will be more exposed
00:14to coercion and face greater limits on their sovereignty.
00:19A greater focus on Australian self-reliance should not be confused with military self-sufficiency.
00:24This is not about jettisoning alliance relationships.
00:28To the contrary, alliances, especially with the United States, will always be fundamental
00:35to Australia's defence.
00:36However, in this tougher era, the benefit of alliances will stem as much from shared access
00:43to critical capability that better enables Australia to defend itself as it does from
00:50security commitments.
00:51Self-reliance means balancing critical tasks we must undertake ourselves with those that
00:59can be assured through trusted partnerships.
01:02And we'll do this with our allies, not in the absence of them.
