01:37Hey I'm Jamie with Guitarist Magazine
01:40And I'm Richard, hi
01:41Today we're doing a deep dive demo on this, the Jimi Hendrix Love Drops Flying V by Epiphone inspired by
01:49Gibson
01:51So a bit of a backstory on this one so bear with us while we tell it because it's quite
01:55an extraordinary story
01:58From 1967 to 1969 Jimi Hendrix used a Flying V that had originally been sunburst, Hendrix painted it sort of
02:06ebony black
02:06And then did his own kind of distinctive artwork on it and which is replicated on this guitar here
02:14And he used it most famously on all along the watchtower
02:18And it's funny isn't it because a lot of people probably think that could be a Strat but it's actually
02:23not
02:23Yeah, that intro solo, a lot of the lead stuff I think he begins and ends it pretty much with
02:29the V doesn't he
02:30And there's Strat in the overdubs and it's got the kitchen sink on it hasn't it
02:35Yeah but it was quite interesting, a few people, you know, this has got 22 frets
02:40And if you listen to the solo it does sort of go up beyond the normal range of a sort
02:44of vintage Strat doesn't it
02:45Yeah, absolutely, I think they're kind of always reminds me a little bit of Stairway to Heaven
02:50I don't know if I'm allowed to say that
02:53And I think with these two fingers
03:01Yeah, that's a bend isn't it, yeah you can't do that on a Strat really can you
03:06He sort of plays that to the fade doesn't he on the record
03:08Yes, yeah, just keeps it going
03:09I remember transcribing it once and every single bar had a slightly different rhythm on it
03:14And I was ending up going
03:19You know, just trying to get that accurate because you know how people are about Jimmy, bless them
03:25Yes, right let's give you a better view of that again, put it back down here
03:28Because my leg's in the way because you can only sit a certain way with these things
03:31So this is the, obviously Henrik's bought the and used the late 60s spec Flying V
03:37So that's as distinct from the Carina 58 ones that were made in small numbers
03:44And are impossibly rare these days
03:46And a few different, yeah they're like the knobs in a line and stuff like that
03:49And shoulders on it
03:51So this is a mahogany bodied V
03:54As replicated by Epiphone here
03:56It's got a single piece neck, single piece mahogany neck
03:59It's got a mahogany body
04:02And we'll go through the rest of the appointments in a moment
04:04But it's worth just telling the rest of the backstory of the original guitar upon which this is based
04:09Because go back a few years
04:12A chap guitarist called Dave Brewis
04:15Who played with Prefab Sprout and the Cane Grang
04:17Who was based in the northeast of England
04:20Went into a guitar shop in Newcastle
04:23And he was chatting to the owner who said
04:26Oh I've got a Jimi Hendrix Flying V
04:30And Dave Brewis, intrigued, took a close look at it
04:34Bought the guitar
04:36Not quite thinking it would be
04:38Really having been owned by any
04:39It's understandable isn't it
04:40Because I imagine that
04:42It's a bit like how many 59 Les Pauls were made
04:45How many are on the market at the moment
04:46Yeah, yeah
04:47Exactly
04:48Equation
04:50They're made 1500 and only 2000 survived
04:52That's a joke isn't it
04:54But basically he took it to various authenticators
04:58They lifted the scratch plate
04:59And they found traces of the original artwork
05:02They found that the wood grain on the fretboard
05:05Matched photographs of Jimi playing his
05:07And so it's a bit of a fairy tale story
05:09That this kind of junk shop guitar almost
05:12Or at least a, you know
05:14Not a shop that you'd expect to find an original Hendrix guitar in
05:18Had yielded the Holy Grail
05:20The real actual Flying V that Hendrix had
05:23Now of course it didn't have the artwork on it
05:26Because somewhere after Hendrix had it
05:29It had been refinished
05:30So let's recap again
05:31It started sunburst
05:32Jimi painted it in ebony black
05:34It received the artwork on the top
05:37And then it reverted to a different colour
05:39It had been refinished again
05:41And there was only traces underneath the scratch plate
05:44And some other details that kind of tipped
05:49Tipped the scale in favour of being the real thing
05:52Gibson then took a close look at the guitar
05:54And they made a limited run of sort of high-end copies of it
05:58And now fast forward to 2024
06:02As part of Epiphone's, you know
06:04Top tier Epiphone inspired by Gibson range
06:06We've now got this
06:07Which is the Jimi Hendrix Love Drops Flying V
06:11I must confess I don't know what the Love Drops refers to
06:14I'm sure somebody in the comments
06:15I've got a feeling that
06:16Yeah, I don't know what Love Drops actually are
06:18And whether they're available over the counter
06:20Only Jimi could say
06:21I can't be sure
06:24So, yeah
06:25So basically
06:27As mentioned before
06:28The Epiphone inspired by Gibson range
06:29Gets all of the buzzes and bells
06:34Yeah, because I mean
06:35It used to be
06:35Or certainly
06:36I know I've done this
06:38And a lot of people know I've done this
06:39Where you'd buy something like
06:40Because the guitars are really nicely made
06:41But the common thing was that
06:43The electrics wouldn't necessarily be that great
06:45So you'd put some decent pots in
06:47Get some decent pickups
06:48And then you've suddenly got something quite serious
06:50Yeah
06:51For less money
06:51Well, they've done it for us, haven't they?
06:54Yeah, so what do we get on this then?
06:56So it's the Gibson Custom Buckers
06:58Which are pretty expensive if you buy those on their own
07:02CTS pots
07:03So that's the US spec pots
07:04That you get in a Gibson Switchcraft
07:08Socket
07:09And three-way selector
07:11Yeah, wow, god
07:12Mallory chains
07:13This is how it starts
07:14Yeah, that's right
07:15And the Mallory capacitors
07:17Yeah
07:17Yeah
07:18So it's really
07:18It's like really nice stuff
07:20I mean
07:20And a maestro
07:21This is not different from
07:23What you'll find in some custom shop stuff
07:25You know
07:25Well, and on the original
07:27Really, I guess
07:28Yeah, yeah
07:28So really, what we've got is
07:30You know, as we mentioned before
07:32Single-piece mahogany neck
07:33Mahogany body
07:34Great hardware
07:35You've got this short maestro
07:38Yeah, yeah
07:39I mean, I flipped it around there
07:40But, yeah
07:40Trend, which has actually been
07:42This has been a little bit of a revelation
07:44I mean, I don't think
07:45You know, traditionally
07:46The maestros in their various forms
07:47Haven't enjoyed the very best of reputations
07:49For staying in tune
07:50But this particular one
07:53Rather than the up and down version
07:55Does actually stay in pretty well
07:56And this one has been really well behaved
07:57It's been very, very good
07:59Do you want to give us a little
08:00Show us the custom buckers
08:02And maybe a little bit
08:03I won't do the star-spangled banner
08:04Or anything
08:05There might be a bit much
08:06But, yeah
08:07So I might save the bridge for last
08:09Actually
08:10If I start with the middle
08:11Which is what I think from memory
08:17How many notes was that?
08:18Am I going to be done for copyright?
08:19But
08:22So it's
08:23Just plugged into the
08:25JTM45 Mark II
08:27You know
08:29And just turned up
08:30Really loud
08:31I'm obviously not in the room
08:32With the speaker
08:38It's a nice sound, isn't it?
08:39Yeah
08:39Good humbuckers
08:40And just this bridge
08:42You know where you think
08:43What will this be like?
08:45Because sometimes bridge humbuckers
08:46Can be a bit disappointing
08:54But
08:55I actually really like
08:56The way that this thing sounds
08:58And as a point of order really
09:00The mounting style here
09:02Straight into the scratch plate
09:04With no surrounds
09:06Quite often
09:07I've found that some guitars
09:08It all feels a little bit flimsy
09:11But these are obviously
09:13Foam-backed or something
09:14Maybe there's something in there
09:15They're actually
09:16Really solidly in position
09:18And you can get a decent amount
09:20Of adjustment out of them
09:22So they've done
09:23I mean
09:24They have gone
09:24To reasonable lengths
09:26To sort of
09:26Present this guitar
09:27In a vintage spec
09:29For example
09:29We've got the nylon saddles
09:30Haven't we?
09:31Yeah
09:31I like the sound of those
09:32Yeah they do
09:32Nice
09:33Sort of rounded off tone
09:34They're not for everybody's cup of tea
09:35But I think they're sound great
09:36On this guitar
09:36They sort of seem to mellow out
09:37The attack a little bit
09:38Which
09:38They really do
09:40I like
09:4067 style
09:41Three ply
09:42Scratch plate
09:43Yep
09:44What do we say
09:45Graf-tech nut
09:46Oh yeah
09:47It's a Graf-tech
09:47Yeah
09:48And it's really nicely cut
09:49And everything
09:49And nicely fitted
09:50Which was another thing
09:52That you know
09:53You'd have been
09:53Straight out of the shop
09:55And ordering that
09:56For it otherwise
09:57But yeah
09:58And that's
09:58Not given any tuning problems
10:01Which I partly attribute
10:03To that
10:03Because they're
10:04Permanently kind of
10:05Lubricated
10:06Aren't they
10:06They're maintenance free
10:09Yeah
10:09And
10:10Are these the Deluxe
10:11Cluson Deluxe
10:12Cluson Star
10:13Yeah
10:13I think the brand is
10:14Efferphone Deluxe
10:15But they're definitely
10:15You know
10:16The inspiration is very clear there
10:17And
10:18You get
10:19You get a hard shell case with it
10:20Which is in this sort of
10:21Slightly Hendrix-y blue colour
10:22That's a 60s colour isn't it
10:24It really is
10:25Yeah
10:26And
10:26I think there's like a little
10:27Signature on the back of the headstock
10:29There is
10:29I don't know if that's something
10:30That
10:31Oh yeah
10:31It's like a jimmy's
10:32Separately
10:32But it's
10:33Got that
10:34Next to the unfortunate sticker
10:35I'd be taking that off
10:37Yeah
10:37You know
10:38Don't put it in the bin
10:39Sticker
10:40And of course
10:41A nod to the fact
10:42Well
10:43Jimmy was a lefty famously
10:45And of course
10:46You've got three strap buttons
10:48One of the reasons
10:48Jimmy liked these
10:51I've read over the years
10:52And
10:54I think I might even have been told
10:55By someone who used to work with him
10:56Was that
10:57Of course
10:58They're very reversible
10:58There's no
10:59If you flip them
11:01There's no
11:01It's the same shape
11:02Sticking out the wrong way
11:03You know
11:03Yeah
11:04And the access is great
11:05Yeah
11:05Yeah
11:07So
11:08Things that
11:09Those are all the great points
11:11Nothing wrong with the fingerboard
11:12But it is laurel
11:13It's not
11:14It's not a rose
11:14Running
11:14So that's a bit different
11:15From the thing
11:16Nicely fretted
11:17Good fret work on there
11:18Yeah
11:18And the nice shaped neck
11:20What is it
11:20A C
11:20Yeah
11:21Something like a
11:22Something C shape
11:24But
11:24I mean it's a good
11:25It's not a big chunky thing
11:27But it's not one of those
11:28Super narrow ones
11:29That I find actually
11:30Can be uncomfortable
11:31But it's a really nice
11:32I don't think that anybody
11:34Watching would have an issue
11:36With that neck shape
11:37Yeah
11:38And in terms of price
11:40And this has been the thing
11:41With these Epiphone
11:42Inspired by Gibson
11:43Like some people
11:44Really balk at the idea
11:46Of this
11:46But this one is £1500
11:49Which seems to be
11:50The sort of
11:50About the
11:51What they're charging
11:52For these
11:53Inspired by Gibson
11:54Because they've made
11:54Yeah
11:55They've made
11:56You know
11:57The greeny style
11:58Les Paul
11:58Haven't they
11:59In Epiphone
11:59Yeah
12:00And they have done
12:01A couple of other things
12:02Like some
12:0363 spec
12:05SG Les Paul
12:06Oh the SG Les Paul
12:06Yeah
12:07In fact I played
12:08Played that
12:09Yeah
12:10Yeah
12:10A few months back
12:11I mean
12:11To be honest
12:13You know
12:14Our response to the
12:16Yeah Epiphone's
12:17Had a funny life
12:17Isn't it
12:17Because it started off
12:18Being the sort of
12:19Slightly posher
12:20You know
12:21Sister to the Gibson brand
12:22Well yeah
12:23Because Gibson
12:23Sort of acquired them
12:24Didn't they
12:25I'm not sure now
12:26Whether it was
12:27The late 50s
12:27I'd have to sort of
12:28Look it up
12:28But then
12:29And they were made
12:31In Kalamazoo
12:32Weren't they
12:33And they put
12:34Their best people on it
12:34Apparently
12:35They wanted to
12:36Get Epiphone's
12:37Into dealerships
12:38That were too close
12:39To established Gibson
12:40Dealerships
12:40So that they had
12:41Two products to sell
12:42But they wanted
12:43The Epiphone's
12:43To be like the Riviera
12:45And all this stuff
12:45With the lovely
12:46Sort of inlays
12:46And true of life
12:47Inlays and things
12:49They wanted them
12:50To be almost
12:51Like a cut above
12:52Yeah the deluxe
12:53Kind of
12:54And yeah we've
12:55Gone through the
12:56Gone through the
12:56Whole sort of period
12:57Where Epiphone
12:58Became the
12:59You know
13:00Japanese made offering
13:02Or the
13:02You know
13:03And then
13:04And then sort of
13:05Acquired this new
13:05Reputation as the
13:06Budget arm of Gibson
13:07Yeah
13:08And through the 90s
13:10That's continued
13:11And since Gibson's
13:13Been under its
13:13Current ownership
13:15It's kind of
13:15Been
13:17Rehabilitated
13:18Sounds a bit
13:18Mean
13:19But it has
13:20Gone up in
13:21Speck and
13:21General
13:22Yeah absolutely
13:23I mean
13:23Certainly from my
13:24Point of view
13:25If you want a
13:26Guitar that you
13:26Didn't have to
13:27Take immediately
13:28Out of the shop
13:29And then rip out
13:29The electrics
13:30I mean that's
13:31Not to say that
13:32There isn't any
13:33Such thing as an
13:34Epiphone that
13:34Sounded great
13:35But I just find
13:36That as we were
13:37Talking earlier
13:38Weren't we
13:38I think that
13:39It's almost more
13:40Important than
13:41Changing the
13:41Pickups to put a
13:42Decent set of
13:42Pots in
13:43Because it really
13:44Just lets everything
13:45Be heard
13:46As it should be
13:47Heard
13:47And it really
13:48Does seem to be
13:49The case with
13:50The guitar
13:50I think there's
13:50A lot of detail
13:52And grit and
13:53Grind to the
13:54Humbucker sound
13:54Just as it should
13:55Be they're quite
13:55Vintage sounding
13:56They are sort of
13:58Unpotted in feel
13:59Aren't they
13:59Because
14:00Yeah
14:00Yeah they are
14:01They're quite lively
14:01The originals
14:02Would have been
14:02Yeah
14:04Yeah they're
14:05Custom buckers
14:05Are like that
14:06Aren't they
14:06Yeah
14:06Yeah
14:07But give us
14:08Another little
14:09Blast just to
14:09Show what we
14:10Mean by that
14:10They've got teeth
14:11But it's also
14:12Got a little
14:13Some nuance
14:13Doesn't it
14:14I mean I don't
14:14Know if it's
14:15It's not very
14:15Scientific
14:16But often if
14:17I want to know
14:17If a pickup's
14:18Potted or not
14:18And we're
14:19Driving this
14:19Marshall a bit
14:20You can hear
14:21That so
14:23That doesn't
14:24Mean it would
14:24Necessarily squeal
14:25I mean a single
14:26Coil would
14:27Yeah
14:27But humbuckers
14:28Don't always
14:29Too much
14:29Especially if
14:30You're sort of
14:30Careful with
14:31The volume
14:31And I suppose
14:32A lot of
14:33Modern day
14:34Stages
14:34You're not
14:35That loud
14:36In your
14:36In ears
14:50That's what I
14:51Think is quite
14:51Impressive
14:52A lot of
14:53The time
14:54Bridge
14:54Sorry
14:55Neck humbuckers
14:55Can be a bit
14:56Anodyne
14:56A bit like
14:57A sine wave
14:57Yeah it can be
14:58Oh yes
14:59I know exactly
14:59What you mean
15:00That kind of
15:00Whistly
15:00Flutey
15:01Yeah it doesn't
15:02Really do a lot
15:03For me
15:03But that one
15:03Has actually
15:04Got a bit
15:04Especially further
15:05Up
15:23There isn't a bad sound
15:24I don't think
15:25On any of the
15:25Switchings
15:26And that is not
15:27Something to be
15:28Taking for granted
15:29Really
15:29Often it's a case
15:30Of well choose
15:31Your pickup
15:31You know
15:32Have it
15:32EQ'd for the
15:33Bridge or neck
15:34And what happens
15:34When you roll
15:35The volume
15:36Back a little bit
15:46I don't think
15:47It's 50s wiring
15:48Or anything like
15:49That but you
15:49Can tell that
15:50The quality
15:53Yeah it doesn't
15:53Completely
15:56It's not like
15:57Someone's put
15:57A little jumper
15:59Yeah I know
15:59That people
16:00Have their own
16:01Opinions about it
16:02But I personally
16:03Always like it
16:04When it retains
16:04A bit of the
16:05That sound
16:06I don't like it
16:07When I've got
16:08Suddenly a really
16:08Bright sound at the
16:09Top and a woofy
16:10Sound down there
16:11I mean great
16:23And especially
16:24On the neck
16:33One day I'll learn
16:34What the controls
16:36Actually do
16:36I'm a professional
16:42It responds
16:43Very well
16:44Actually
16:45I mean
16:46Inherent to the
16:47Design is the
16:48Fact that
16:48As Richard
16:48You can see
16:49From Richard
16:50Sitting here
16:50To stop the
16:50Thing sliding
16:51Off your knee
16:51When you see
16:52Oh yeah
16:53I'm not trying
16:53To be kind
16:54Of cool or
16:55Anything
16:58One interesting
16:59Thing was
16:59You know
16:59On the
17:00The 58
17:01Flying Vs
17:02The Carina
17:02Ones
17:02They had a
17:03Little rubber
17:04Like a
17:04Oh they did
17:05On here
17:05Didn't they
17:06I was told
17:07I was told by
17:07A vintage
17:08Guitar dealer
17:09Of some
17:10Repute that
17:11Those were
17:11Cut up
17:12Rubber floor
17:13Mats from
17:13The Kalamazoo
17:14Factory
17:14That they
17:15Made those
17:15Little things
17:16Which I
17:16Thought was a
17:16Nice little
17:17Detail
17:17But no
17:18Such thing
17:18On this
17:19So you
17:19Probably want
17:19To get
17:19Your own
17:20I'm sure
17:20There's an
17:21Aftermarket
17:21You know
17:22I mean
17:22Home base
17:25Any good
17:26Doormat
17:27Retailer
17:27Would do
17:27That
17:28But I
17:28Think you
17:29Can get
17:29Little things
17:29That fold
17:29Out
17:30Like a
17:30Little
17:30Leg
17:30Oh yes
17:31Yeah
17:31I've seen
17:32Those on
17:32The stick
17:33Guitars
17:33And things
17:33Like that
17:34Yeah
17:34Yeah
17:35One last
17:36Final detail
17:37It's
17:37Mother of
17:38Pearl
17:38Dots
17:39They're
17:39Actually
17:39They're not
17:39Plastic
17:40Which is
17:41Quite nice
17:41I mean
17:42It is a
17:43Poly finish
17:43Isn't it
17:43Rather than
17:44Nitro
17:44But I have
17:45To say
17:45That it's
17:45Really
17:46Beautifully
17:47Done
17:47And
17:49It won't
17:50Check
17:50Like a
17:51Nitro
17:51But it
17:51Will
17:52Always
17:52Look
17:52Like this
17:53Yes
17:54And I
17:54Think
17:54This is
17:55A limited
17:55Run
17:55So
17:56They're
17:56Not
17:56Necessarily
17:57Going to
17:57Be
17:57Around
17:57Forever
17:58I
17:58Would
17:58Expect
17:58These
17:58To
17:59Be
17:59Snapped
18:00Up
18:00Actually
18:00Especially
18:01Given
18:01How
18:01Nice
18:02The
18:02Guitar
18:02Sounds
18:02I
18:03Mean
18:03In
18:04Summary
18:05You
18:05Know
18:051500
18:06Quid
18:06I
18:06Know
18:06People
18:07Have
18:07Said
18:07Oh
18:08Too
18:08Much
18:08For
18:08An
18:08F
18:08I
18:10Don't
18:10Know
18:10I
18:11Mean
18:11Things
18:11Are
18:11More
18:12Expensive
18:12Now
18:12Aren't
18:13They
18:13Though
18:13And
18:14Really
18:15You
18:15Can't
18:16Really
18:16Have
18:16It
18:16Both
18:16Ways
18:17You
18:17Either
18:17Want
18:18The
18:18I
18:19Think
18:19Some
18:19Of
18:19It
18:19Is
18:20The
18:20Components
18:20This
18:21Was
18:21Pretty
18:22Well
18:22Set
18:22Up
18:22Out
18:22Of
18:22The
18:23Box
18:25As
18:3010-46
18:30Regular
18:32Gauge
18:34And
18:34It's
18:36It's
18:36Well
18:36Made
18:37And
18:37I
18:37Think
18:37Quite
18:37A lot
18:38Of
18:38The
18:38Expense
18:38With
18:38The
18:39Guitar
18:39Is
18:39The
18:39Amount
18:40Of
18:40Hours
18:40That
18:40Have
18:40Gone
18:40Into
18:41Fettling
18:42It
18:42At
18:42The
18:42End
18:43Of
18:43The
18:43Production
18:43Run
18:44I
18:44Think
18:45If
18:45We
18:46Take
18:46Away
18:46All
18:47Of
18:47Our
18:47Feelings
18:47About
18:48Brands
18:48Whatever
18:48They
18:48Might
18:49Be
18:49Positive
18:49Or
18:49Negative
18:50We're
18:51Left
18:51With
18:51The
18:51Reality
18:51Of
18:52What
18:52A
18:52Guitar
18:52Is
18:52Does
18:53It
18:53Stay
18:53In
18:53Tune
18:54Does
18:54It
18:54Sound
18:55Good
18:55Does
18:55It
18:56Play
18:56Well
18:56And
18:56You
18:57Know
18:57You
18:57Have
18:58To
18:58Say
18:58That
18:58That
18:58That
18:58Accomplishes
18:59All
18:59Of
18:59These
18:59Things
19:00Been
19:00Very
19:00Surprised
19:01Actually
19:02I
19:02Mean
19:02Just
19:02Briefly
19:03Just
19:03So
19:03That
19:03People
19:04Know
19:04I'm
19:04Not
19:04Just
19:05Saying
19:05It
19:05To
19:06Be
19:06Nice
19:06I
19:07Mean
19:15I
19:15Managed
19:16To
19:16Put
19:16It
19:16Out
19:16A
19:17Little
19:17Bit
19:17There
19:17But
19:17It
19:18Stays
19:18Very
19:18Well
19:18And
19:19It's
19:19Not
19:20Really
19:21Got
19:21The
19:21Range
19:21Of
19:23Oh
19:23No
19:24Absolutely
19:24It's
19:25For
19:25Little
19:25Wobbles
19:25And
19:25Things
19:26Like
19:26That
19:26In
19:26Fact
19:26I
19:26Don't
19:27Even
19:27Know
19:27If
19:27Hendrix
19:28Used
19:28That
19:28Most
19:29Of
19:29The
19:29Time
19:29When
19:29I
19:29See
19:30These
19:30Things
19:30The
19:30Arms
19:30Around
19:31There
19:32But
19:33It's
19:34Pretty
19:34Good
19:34And
19:34I've
19:34Been
19:34Bending
19:35Strings
19:35And
19:35Doing
19:36All
19:36Sorts
19:36With
19:36It
19:36And
19:37I've
19:37Hardly
19:37Had
19:37To
19:37Tune
19:38It
19:38So
19:38That
19:38It's
19:39A
19:39Great
19:39Sign
19:40Well
19:40There
19:40So
19:40There
19:41We
19:41Are
19:41The
19:41Jimmy
19:41Hendrix
19:42Love

19:45The
19:45Epiphone
19:45Inspired
19:45By
19:46Gibson
19:46Range
19:46And
19:47Yeah
19:48If
19:48You
19:48Want
19:48One
19:49Probably
19:50A
19:50Good
19:50Idea
19:50To
19:50Try
19:51And
19:51Get
19:51Your
19:51Hands
19:51On
19:51One
19:52I
19:52Believe
19:52It
19:52Is
19:52A
19:53Limited
19:53Run
19:53Yeah
19:53And
19:54Yeah
19:55So
19:56Hope
19:57You've
19:57Enjoyed
