00:09Summer is holiday time for many people in Europe, but holidays are also a privilege that many can't afford.
00:15In 2025, almost 3 in 10 EU citizens aged 16 or older were unable to afford a week of annual
00:22holidays away from home.
00:24This share increased by 0.5 percentage points compared with 2024.
00:28However, when compared to a decade ago, the share decreased significantly by 7.7 percentage points.
00:35In 2025, the highest proportions of people unable to afford a week of annual holiday were recorded in Romania at
00:4261.4%,
00:44Greece at 46.6% and Bulgaria and Hungary both at 39.1%.
00:51In addition, Romania, Greece and Bulgaria were the EU countries that recorded the highest shares of severe material
00:58and social deprivation rate among young people in 2025.
01:02In contrast, the lowest shares of EU citizens unable to afford a one-week holiday away from home
01:08were seen in Luxembourg at 10.6%, Sweden at 12.4% and the Netherlands at 12.8%.
01:18Some experts point to the rising cost of accommodation, transport and food combined with declining purchasing power
01:25and speculation as some of the reasons for holiday poverty.
