00:00Dibs is fine. Everything's fine. Probably going to be back tomorrow. He'll be back when he's back. Everything's cool.
00:06And yeah, Zach Manassian. And by the way, everything we're doing today, I think, is going to be on YouTube
00:12also, okay?
00:14So Zach Manassian, 330, Tim Kawakami, 415. Should be an excellent show.
00:21I always, I don't know where your brain goes. My mind goes here. One of the reasons Draymond Green gets
00:28talked about as much as he does, and one of the reasons we love to make it sound like people
00:33are fighting, you know what the Warriors told him?
00:35The Warriors told him, you take one year and you like it! And you don't get a no-trade class.
00:41And Draymond said, fine, but I'm going to get a tech and walk off the floor whenever I want, and
00:46then I'm going to podcast about...
00:48And you know what? I can't tell you that that's not the way it is.
00:54But I also hear both sides constantly say, we have a wonderful relationship.
01:05We've never, I've never been mistreated, Draymond recently said.
01:09At the Valkyries game a couple of nights ago, he didn't go over to Joe Lacob and say, what are
01:14you doing here?
01:15I thought we had a restraining order against one another. No, they came over and visited with one another in
01:22the front row.
01:23You know what else Draymond and Joe Lacob did together recently?
01:27Uh, a podcast?
01:29No.
01:30Oh, okay.
01:31Draymond said it on his podcast this morning.
01:34Did they golf?
01:34They golfed together at Riviera.
01:37It's a hard course.
01:39Draymond said, I shot a hundred and something.
01:42Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's hard.
01:43I, you know what? Good on him for actually counting all the shots.
01:47Good on you.
01:48I, I, I congratulate people who are like, I shot a hundred and nine.
01:53It's like, good.
01:54Cause I know so many people who shoot a hundred and nine and they're like 82.
01:59I'm like, no, no, you don't get to hit it until you like it.
02:02That's not golf.
02:04Hey, you're just slowing everybody down, Bob.
02:06So good, Draymond.
02:08Good. A hundred and something.
02:09Played a full round of 18 with Joe at Riviera down in SoCal.
02:13And then went to a Valkyries game together as Joe's guest specifically.
02:16Who paid?
02:17I'm sure Joe did.
02:18I bet no one.
02:19Well, he's actually the answer.
02:22Joe has an in.
02:23He's a member everywhere.
02:25He has an in.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:27I bet.
02:28I bet he does.
02:29Look, I, what I think is that so many warrior fans and observers, I think you want it to
02:40be dramatic because you kind of want them to break up.
02:46The warriors in general or the warriors and Draymond?
02:49The warriors and Draymond.
02:50I think the exhaustion is just at an all-time high, but there's also the ex-girlfriend dynamic.
02:58Wish I knew how to quit you kind of a thing where like, that's how people feel about Draymond.
03:04You know, he'll do something like he did against the Clippers in the playing game.
03:08And there'll be a news cycle of 48 to 72 hours where people just fawn over his abilities.
03:15And he's a four-time champion.
03:16And that's why we love him around here.
03:20And I also am mindful, you and I talk about this a lot, the echo chamber in which we live
03:25probably makes it sound like people don't like Draymond more than his reality.
03:29But I think it's real.
03:31I do think it's real.
03:32I think there is just such a high level of, we've been watching you for a decade and a half.
03:38You've taken us through a lot of weird journeys.
03:41And for every ring, there's a controversy, maybe two.
03:46And we're tired.
03:47And we've arrived at a point where we can no longer wrap our heads around the controversy
03:52because it doesn't come with it, the chance at a championship.
03:57So just, can you guys be done?
03:59And the Warriors and Draymond both keep going, no.
04:02And so we process it as if they're fighting in the background because I think a lot of you
04:07want that to be the case.
04:08That's my read.
04:10But again, I can't tell people that they're wrong.
04:12Maybe they do throw clipboards off the wall in negotiations.
04:15The days of Draymond, besides this year, when this year is over, the days of Draymond making
04:20$20 million a year are over.
04:22For sure.
04:23Like, the reason why he got the contracts last time that he did was because the Warriors
04:28were coming off of a championship.
04:30And Draymond Green maybe didn't have his best finals performance but was a very key part of
04:34that championship team, you have young players who you think are going to develop into good
04:38players.
04:39You thought you had chances to win more championships.
04:40So you're going to keep Draymond around and you're going to give him the amount of money
04:43it takes to keep him around and to make him feel respected and wanted as a piece of the
04:49pie still.
04:49But now the team won 37 games last year.
04:51They're essentially running it back.
04:53The only difference is Yaxel instead of Kaminga and Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are hurt to
04:58begin the year instead of to end the year.
05:00So things aren't looking great.
05:02So when the time comes to answer the question of Draymond's future beyond this year, it's
05:07all right, Draymond, will you take $8 million a year or whatever the number turns out to
05:11be?
05:12The days of Draymond being highly paid are over after this season.
05:15And to me, that's like Rafi Devers and Bryce Eldridge and who plays first base.
05:18It's a problem, but it's a question for a different day.
05:21I just, and if I'm Draymond, I'm not offended by that.
05:24I guess that's where my mind goes.
05:26And maybe I'm wrong about this, but because we've watched over and over and over again, most
05:32athletes, most human beings, when they go to work, they are thinking on some level about
05:37money, no matter if they've got enough money for the rest of their lives or not.
05:41Now we do suddenly in the NBA last couple of years, we're getting some interesting stories
05:45of big time players who are not all about squeezing every dollar out of their team.
05:51Jalen Brunson took less.
05:53LeBron's about to play on a minimum.
05:54Wemmey did not take the full max.
05:57Yeah, so it is a thing.
05:58And so I do question that whether Draymond Green is sitting here today about to make another
06:06$28 million and really freaking out about his financial viability in 2028.
06:13And same with Jimmy Butler.
06:16I'm not playing unless you extend me.
06:18Really?
06:19These dudes that have made over a quarter bill?
06:22Like, really?
06:25They're stressing and prioritizing money in a future year.
06:32Both of them will be paid a combined $80 some odd million that they haven't even been given
06:40yet.
06:40And that's on top of what they've already made.
06:43And they're going to act this year solely based on yet another contract?
06:49Well, if you ask Draymond, he'll tell you he's already taken less over the years.
06:55Yes, he did say that.
06:57He said that multiple times.
06:58He said it again on the podcast that came out this morning.
07:00Yeah, I mean, he's kind of not wrong.
07:01Committed to winning.
07:02He's not, I mean.
07:03His whole point, and it kind of went viral recently because he was on, I think it was Jeff
07:08Teague's podcast from a couple of years ago when Brunson originally signed the contract
07:12for less so that they could trade for McHale Bridges and acquire Carl Anthony Towns and sign
07:18Josh Hart and all those things.
07:20Draymond essentially said the star shouldn't be taking the discounts like Steph hasn't taken
07:25a discount.
07:26He said, I've taken the discount.
07:28Me being Draymond, I'm pretending I'm Draymond here for a second.
07:31I took the discount.
07:32Josh Hart, you should be the guy taking the discount, not Jalen Brunson.
07:35It was essentially his whole point and all that, and he got Josh Hart all mad at him,
07:40and he tried to explain it away on his podcast today, but Draymond will 1,000% say he's taking
07:47way, he has over the course of his career taken way, way, way less than he otherwise would
07:51have in a different situation.
07:52I mean, he's probably not wrong.
07:55He's probably not wrong.
07:56Like through this whole thing, Steph, Clay, Draymond, nobody ever talked about Draymond
08:02being a max player, but he was.
08:05Steph's been the highest played player in the league for what, like a decade now?
08:09And Clay Thompson got a max deal in a hospital, but Draymond Green as vital, right?
08:16Oh, absolutely.
08:17So like, he's probably not wrong.
08:19Some might say more vital than Clay.
08:21This is one thing I've always wondered about the way we look at Draymond.
08:24Like I think when you have a personality like he does and the resume that he does, we sort
08:31of translate that to mean you are out of control and lack self-awareness.
08:37I've always felt Draymond Green has a lot more self-awareness than we give him credit
08:43for.
08:44And I get why we don't give him credit for that because he's a hothead.
08:47And that doesn't usually equate with self-awareness.
08:51But I do think Draymond Green is often aware of the situation.
08:58And therefore, whether that is, if you want to call it taking less, some people think it
09:02was too much, at least some of the contracts he signed, and maybe even loop that into now.
09:09That'd be my bet.
09:10And I might be wrong, but I bet that Draymond Green right now is not sitting here going,
09:15I cannot believe that the Warriors didn't give me another year.
09:20I would think he'd be thinking, you know what?
09:22We worked together on this.
09:25They gave me my year back.
09:27That was a prearranged agreement.
09:30We won 37 games last year, and I'm on the other side of 35.
09:36Why would they commit to me now?
09:40I bet he has some level of that awareness.
09:43Well, there's a difference between maybe being a little frustrated or, you know, a little
09:48upset that you didn't get exactly what you wanted, the ideal situation, versus being so
09:53upset that you're going to cause chaos purposefully all season long.
09:58Like, there is a lot of space in between those two things.
10:01Like, he could be, you know, maybe a little upset that he didn't get a couple of years,
10:05but I don't think it's at a point, to your point, his awareness is such that he'll understand
10:10why the Warriors wanted to do what they did, which was, you know, it didn't work out this
10:14year, so the money that we would have saved this season by extending you two or three
10:19years to lower your cap it for this one season turned out to not be worth it, because we
10:24couldn't get anybody else to come here.
10:26So Draymond, we're just going to give you all your money that you rightly deserve, because
10:30you would have opted in if there was no chance of LeBron or AD.
10:34We'll give that to you.
10:36It doesn't mean we don't want you a year from now, but it just means you deserve that.
10:41We're going to give it to you, and we'll cross that next bridge when we get to it.
10:44Plus, if he's annoyed with his company, great.
10:47That's every human being in America.
10:50I mean, like, the people I work with here on this show have all been promoted within
10:55the last three weeks, so maybe you guys are all happy or whatever, but isn't everybody
10:59trying to prove something to their employer?
11:00Oh, absolutely.
11:01Okay, so if Draymond's a little annoyed, great.
11:05Go dunk on someone.
11:07Probably not.
11:08But to your point, I don't think it's anywhere near a point where he's going to, like, actively
11:13sabotage anything going on this season.
11:15I don't know.
11:16I really don't.
11:17And no, I don't think he's going to sabotage.
11:20And he has a really high level of pride being a warrior for his whole career and what this
11:23organization has meant.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Absolutely.
11:25Like, at least he's aware of that.
11:27Oh, yes.
11:28I don't think he thinks, like, that the Warriors are getting over on him or something like
11:32that.
11:33I think he's proud of what he's achieved.
11:35I think he's proud of what the Warriors have achieved.
11:38And who knows?
11:40Yeah, maybe he's totally pissed right now.
11:43You should ask him next time you're talking to him preparing his podcast when he hasn't
11:47hit the, when the red light's not on yet.
11:50Ask him.
11:50Hey, Draymond, you super annoyed with the Warriors?
11:53Do you want a second year?
11:54Say what he says.
11:54But anyway, my perception is this drama gets played up a little bit because I do think
12:00there are a lot of people that want it to be the case.
12:02They would like there to be strife between the Warriors and Draymond Green.
12:08Because they think Draymond is the issue.
12:10Is that your read?
12:12Because they want him gone.
12:13Yeah, because they think Draymond is the issue.
12:15Strife leads to the Warriors deciding to move on.
12:18And that's what so many Warrior fans would like.
12:22I mean, I get it.
12:23I get it.
12:24I'm just, I'm not like personally activated by it right now because there isn't a championship
12:30on the other side of any move.
12:32Draymond did publicly announce that Steve Kerr came to him and said, it's getting awfully
12:37hard to support you publicly.
12:39Oh, I'm sure.
12:40I'm sure they fight.
12:42I'm sure they fight.
12:44It is a fascinating relationship, isn't it?
12:46It's a fascinating guy.
12:48It's a fascinating team.
12:49So you got to keep fighting.
12:50Yeah, and they will.
12:51It's hard to support you.
12:53And that's why you get promoted.
12:54That's what you do.
12:56See, 888-957-9570.
12:59Before we set up some phone calls coming up, I want everyone to be happy today.
13:03And I think this makes people happy.
13:06The national call of the Giants game in Texas yesterday got all screwed up because they're
13:11interviewing people in the middle of the game.
13:13I wish they'd stop doing that.
13:14This is how you call a Jung-Hoo Lee homerun.
13:17And then you do it again.
13:46I see everyone in here is.
13:48I'm smiling here to you.
13:50Did that make you happy?
13:51I love how there's just a couple of words you can make out.
13:58I mean.
13:59So that's the Korean call of Jung-Hoo Lee's two homerun games.
14:02Correct.
14:02Got it.
14:03So the Giants sent that out yesterday.
14:04And that's happiness in a can.
14:07So I hope you're all smiling as much as we are.
14:12I hope that made your day.
14:13And I plan on playing that 48 times between now and 6 o'clock.
14:17Thanks.
14:17We may need it.
14:18All right.
14:19All right.
14:19Zach Manassi in an hour.
14:21Your call's next.
14:21Grady's here for dibs.
