Willard and Dibs react to the statement the Warriors released about Kristaps Porzingis and his health-related absence and what Porzingis himself wrote on social media. What does this mean for the Warriors with the regular season one week away?
Transcript
00:00The Kristaps Porzingis thing obviously has just landed joint statements by both the Warriors
00:06and Kristaps with regard to the situation. And just to sum it up, Kristaps is trying to get
00:13back. He's back with the team. He's going to be around the team. But as far as when he's going
00:18to play basketball, nobody knows. Your guess is as good as ours. And if history tells us anything
00:23about Porzingis, hell. I mean, it's not crazy to think that he might not play at all this year.
00:29I have no idea. And in some ways, even worse, he could come back and play and then this
00:34flares up again. And I am not educated about what it is that he's dealing with. I don't
00:41even know if it is Potts. I don't really know what Potts is, despite the fact that we've
00:45read about it a thousand times. So it's a mysterious situation. And obviously, it puts the Warriors
00:53in a hell of a spot to start the year. And this is on the heels of Steve Kerr saying
00:59last night also, by the way, we're nowhere near where we need to be to start the season,
01:05which starts in seven days.
01:06Exactly. A week from today against the Lakers, the first of 82. And your offense isn't quite
01:12ready. And you're not going to have Porzingis. And you already don't have Butler and Moody.
01:16So it does feel a little bit like the year before the year. They'll never admit to that.
01:21They'll never ascribe to putting a name on what this year actually is. But all you have
01:25to do is look between the lines on what Steve Kerr and even Steph Curry are saying. They're
01:31not saying championship or bust. They're talking about meaningful basketball. They're talking
01:34about playing cleaner. And boy, Axel, man, he sure looks good. And, you know, don't miss
01:40Yax Elendeborg. And so don't turn any more ankles in the preseason. Also, by the way,
01:46the turn ankle happens. And you look at the I think it's the Vegas or the Calci win total
01:51for the Warriors and it's 38. So the markets are telling you 38 and 44 is about what they
01:57see. Yeah. Doesn't feel like a playoff team. 38 and 44. Yeah. And I mean, hell, in a situation
02:04like this, I don't even know how you can. I don't even know how to project this right now.
02:09That's the best way for me to say I have no idea how to project the Warriors. There's
02:13so many teams in the West that to me are mystery. But right now, the Warriors are probably the
02:19biggest one. I don't even know who's playing basketball for them. Do you know what I mean?
02:23Like there's some new rotational players. Brandon Williams is he's exciting, man. He's fast,
02:29but he's also really inconsistent with his shot. You know, you got George Niang. He's in there
02:34now. Yaxel is obviously going to cook, but is he ready to play winning basketball already?
02:41We haven't even gotten to breaking down the pods extension. How many games does Steph and Draymond
02:46play? And then how quickly can Jimmy Butler, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody actually
02:52contribute to this team? Projecting what this team is going to do this year feels impossible.
02:58I have no idea what they're going to do. Yeah. And you could say that with most teams,
03:01but by and large with other teams in Philly is a good example. As low as mentioning before,
03:07like LeBron is an older player. So what can you really expect from him? Probably not 30 minutes
03:12a night. I think he plays more than 15. I thought low is a little harsh on that limit, but
03:17Joel Embiid
03:18is a guy who has had injuries throughout his long career. So even if you look at Philly and if
03:23you
03:23think that they are the bees knees and that they will be right there in the end of it, every
03:28team has
03:29question marks and Philly's got a 42 year old LeBron and Joel Embiid who's never stays healthy. So
03:35what are they really going to be? Yeah. I mean, there's great question there too. You know what
03:41I mean? Like I, I, I think that there's a, there's a great variable with that basketball team. But as,
03:47as far as this one, um, I don't know that I've ever gone into a season, uh, for any of
03:54the teams
03:54sort of feeling like this, I've definitely, uh, been right before and I've been wrong before on
04:00this one. I don't even know what to say. I like, I have no way to stick a finger on
04:05the pulse of what
04:06this warrior basketball team can be right now. And I know that it's very fashionable, um, to come
04:13after the general manager and tell the warriors that they failed Steph Curry and they should have
04:18gone after this, that, or the other. And I think that that is way, way, way easier said than done.
04:25I understand this role of the dice. I also understand how frustrating it is that it has
04:31come up and flared up again and done so before the season even starts. And I think behind the scenes,
04:37the warriors kind of have maybe a different view on it than the fan base does. When you,
04:42when you have a superstar who's 38 years old, still commands a very high salary, uh, still
04:48commands the room. In other words, the fan base doesn't, in fact, they're allergic to the idea
04:53of him ever leaving. And I get all that. Then the team is very handcuffed, you know, especially
05:00in this situation where you have another star making a lot of money who also will not play.
05:05So all of those things to send the warriors onto the market and say, do better, bring in this,
05:11bring in that. I really don't even know what the hell was available to them. I don't. And actually I
05:17would guess not much really, really not much. So they took a calculated risk here. It seems like
05:25it's come up snake eyes and, um, and we go from there and, and, you know, we'll see what they
05:31can
05:32do for the first half of the season. I don't know what the Chris Stapps forcing this alternative would
05:37be because you traded coming and others for him. And so you brought him in and it didn't really work
05:43out. But yeah, when he played, actually, he was fantastic in the 15 games he played. And I'm not
05:48saying this tongue in cheek because he averaged 16 a night in the 15 games he was able to play.
05:54So
05:55when able to put on a uniform, he still is a very productive player. The problem is he played in
06:01a
06:01total of 32 games across two teams, 32 out of 82. That's about 40%. That's not going to cut it.
06:08So
06:09you look at this year, I really don't know what they could have done. They re-signed Chris Stapps to
06:14a one plus one, which tells me, all right, if it works out and he's healthy ish, we pick up
06:20that
06:20option. We have him for two. If it doesn't work out well, there might be a team looking for a
06:25dead
06:25salary at the deadline. Yeah. And I don't even know that next year is like a thought in the mind
06:30of,
06:30of carryover like that. I really, that's one vibe that I have right now. It's not a popular one.
06:36It's not a fun one as the season starts, but I, I almost feel like this year of warrior basketball
06:43is just a, a total recalibration of what they can then do with Steph in those final two years
06:51in the extension that he just signed. He left a little bit of money on the table. You'll get
06:56information about those knees and, and what kind of player he can be going forward. And then almost
07:02every other roster spot. Sure. There's still pods. There's Yoxel. They'll be moody, but outside of
07:07that, lots of cap space and roster spots available. And right now I would bet more likely than not all
07:15of these names, the big names and the money, the Horford, the Porzingis, the Butler, the Draymond,
07:21like I'd bet against any of them playing here next year. All of them. I'd bet against all of them
07:26playing here next year. I think, I think this year it depends. You're right, but it would for
07:32that to happen. You would need some really good stuff to happen this year and not trending that
07:37way right now. You would need Jimmy to get healthy and look somewhat like Jimmy before the injury.
07:42And he's making 56.8 million. I don't think he's making that. He might make half of that. And if
07:47he's
07:48going to get offered half of that somewhere, he might want to stay here and, and give it a go.
07:52And Draymond Green last year, his deal, he may be in a spot where he takes less to try to
07:57give it
07:58one more shot. Horford's under contract for 7.1 million. Unless he wants to walk away from
08:037 million for playing half the season. I mean, he's very old. Yeah, but he still provides,
08:10he provides one set skill that I mean, can be helpful. So a joint statement has been released
08:17by both the Golden State Warriors and Kristaps Porzingis. The Warriors is a very formal
08:22statement that essentially says Kristaps is now with the team has met with Mike Dunleavy
08:26and Rick Celebrini. He will stay around the team, but remains out indefinitely. And there is no
08:33update on a timetable. They don't feel it appropriate to share yet. The more interesting
08:37one to me is what Kristaps wrote on Twitter. Here it is. Hello, people. I'm working with doctors and
08:42experts to figure out how to be fully back to good health ASAP. Honestly, I'm getting better and
08:47better. I just have to stay patient and I believe I'll be feeling great again soon. It has definitely
08:53been frustrating dealing with some health stuff that you can't exactly pinpoint on top of injuries
08:58throughout my career. So it has added up for sure, but we will get through it. Health is wealth. Thank
09:04you for all the support. And then he adds, I appreciate all the internet doctors trying to diagnose and help,
09:10but I'm in the best hands so everyone can relax now. And I don't have HIV or AIDS. So that's
09:18from
09:18Kristaps Porzingis. Uh, just posted that, uh, about a half hour ago. Right. And I guess people have been
09:25coming into his mentions and saying, Oh, you must have HIV or AIDS or whatever. And for sure. Social
09:30media is just unbearable in situations like that. It's unbearable. You could have stopped it at that.
09:36I think Instagram is probably the last bastion of not so much negativity. Usually it's, you know,
09:42people are going to comment on something and it's like, Oh, I like the picture or whatever. But
09:45Twitter is an absolute cesspool of negativity. And if I was a pro athlete dealing with something
09:51like that, I wouldn't go near any of those. I mean, but then again, he's probably sitting around
09:56with a whole freaking helping a downtime right now. And, uh, and so there, there you have it. Um,
10:03um, but that's, that's from Chris Dobson. It certainly sounds to me like the Warriors
10:09should not expect anything anytime soon.
