JP and BMitch think the Washington defense has shown a massive improvement so far in training camp
Transcript
00:00And I think defensively, they clearly are going to try to take the fight to the opposition,
00:05and I think that has real value.
00:09I also think offensively, it is so much, there's a lot to like offensively.
00:18And I think Antonio Williams is a kid that has impressed me.
00:21I meant to ask you this, and I don't know where you were at that point in time.
00:26They were running against air, but primarily all we've seen so far is red zone work.
00:33So we haven't really seen the deep ball from any of the quarterbacks.
00:36We really haven't.
00:37The farthest they've been out from the goal line is like the 30-yard line.
00:41And today they were running routes against air,
00:44so it's not like somebody's beating Mikey Sammerstil off the line of scrimmage or something.
00:50But I've watched these guys run.
00:53And Trey Burks is somebody I've been impressed by.
00:55I was really concerned when he had the foot soreness.
00:57He's fine now, which is great.
01:01Burks probably ran the first route, and I think it was a ball from Jaden.
01:05Just easy pitch and catch, even though it's a 45-yard pass.
01:08Those two just have a good connection.
01:10My one concern with Burks, because he's a bigger guy and strong and muscular,
01:19and he doesn't slow down that fast once he gets up to top speed.
01:23And, dude, they have those fences there behind the end zone for the fans sitting there.
01:29I thought he was going to go right into the fence, dude.
01:32Because when you're coming in and you make that catch,
01:34like by the time you turn your head and see what's ahead of you,
01:37like it's a second or so and he's moving at such a fast speed,
01:41he was able to cut it off and turn to the side.
01:42That's for you and I, Jay.
01:43Right.
01:44He was fine.
01:45For an athletic guy in his prime, he see that thing, he's out of there.
01:49But, Doug, the dude that stood out to me most,
01:52and this is running nine routes against air.
01:55I recognize we're not talking a high degree of difficulty, okay?
02:00Did you see Van Jefferson run the nine?
02:02Yeah.
02:03Dude flies.
02:05He can get up.
02:05And his strides were unique.
02:08Usually when guys get up to top speed like that, it's long strides.
02:11He has kind of choppy steps with it.
02:14Yeah.
02:14I was fascinated watching that.
02:16Yeah.
02:16He can run, man.
02:18But, like, we haven't seen, like, the deep, deep, deep route.
02:21But I saw one today where Jaden threw about a 25-yard pass up the scene to Cheek.
02:30And Cheek.
02:31Cheek's had a really good couple days.
02:32He's running, and the way he threw it was right here.
02:35Because if he threw it in front of him, he had a safety coming here.
02:39And he threw it kind of right on his body because he had somebody else outside of him.
02:44But Cheek was able to catch it in stride, continue running.
02:47So, I just got a text from Matty, like, on Friday on the show,
02:52what are you going to be looking for?
02:53And I wrote.
02:54So, Jaden and Cheek's familiarity.
02:57I like it.
02:57The familiarity and the way that they're connecting because, ultimately,
03:03that is something that we saw last year that Jaden loves to go.
03:06In the last two years, he will go to the tight end.
03:09Totally.
03:09And if you've got a tight end that can run like that dude
03:11and you can get the ball and do some extra stuff after it,
03:14I want to see that because I think that will be a vital part.
03:17Because the thing we discussed mostly, number two, number two, number two.
03:23Well, he can be that number two.
03:25And I think I'm going to be checking it out.
03:27But I've watched all these quarterbacks.
03:30You even mentioned it.
03:31Sam Hartman has been letting the ball go.
03:33Yeah.
03:34You know, he had that injury or surgery and his arm wasn't as strong last year.
03:39But right now, he seems to have completely healed from that, letting the thing go.
03:44Well, shout-out to Dr. Espinel.
03:46Just sent me a photo.
03:47He's watching us right now, B.
03:48What's up, Doc?
03:51I think it's been an encouraging start to camp.
03:55I do think the injury stuff is not great, but that's going to happen throughout NFL camps.
04:01And right now, the Bates thing is most significant, right?
04:06I mean, he's going to miss weeks, plural.
04:08I like the tight end depth.
04:10Yeah.
04:11They don't – you're not replacing Bates' toughness and physical blocking ability, period.
04:16He's among the best in the NFL at that.
04:19But I think both Sennett and Yankoff are very willing blockers.
04:23You might not get what you get with Bates, but you've got guys that are very willing to do it.
04:29And that's all it takes.
04:30The thing about football –
04:31They're not looking for Chig to be a physical blocker.
04:33Chig's like almost a receiver.
04:34You know, you said the guys that are willing.
04:38The thing about sports, defense is the hardest thing in every sport.
04:43Blocking without getting the football is the hardest thing in sports.
04:47But the guys that are willing to do it, they realize real quick, if I'm willing to do it, I
04:53don't want to lose.
04:55Okay?
04:56And if they become better at it, all of a sudden you realize your team gets better.
05:00And those guys are willing.
05:03Bates, he was born to block.
05:05That's what it seems like to me.
05:07But you look at a guy like Sennett, you know, and ever since that interview the other day, I'm pulling
05:13for this kid.
05:13Because, you know, that's something fans never understand.
05:17Fans say professional athlete, they think you've got everything in the bag.
05:20You're some level of superhero.
05:22No, you're a human being who deals with some of the same ish that everybody else deals with.
05:26100%.
05:26And this kid was able to figure that out, talk to the right folks, and move forward.
05:31So I think he's going to – like Bates being out is a plus for a lot of other people.
05:39Because now those guys are getting the experience they wouldn't ordinarily get if he was here.
05:43You get what I'm saying?
05:44Yep.
05:44So I'm expecting them to go out there and do some good things.
05:47And then Yankov, I'm just throwing it back for him.
05:49Yanks look good, man.
05:50They showed that pitcher, I saw it, they say in or out.
05:53He got his toe and then a knee.
05:55That's in the middle.
05:56Now the DB is always going to pop up and say out.
05:58Every DB in history has called a pass incomplete.
06:01The ref called it incomplete, though.
06:02Yeah, but he held on to it.
06:06Once that knee hits, normally a knee is damn two feet.
06:10And I think he got the left knee in, I mean he got the left knee in, the right foot
06:15was down,
06:16and the butt kind of hit the line a little bit.
06:19That's touchdown to me.
06:21We're talking about a play from yesterday's camp that maybe the commanders posted.
06:26I'm guessing they did.
06:28You know, I also thought, so to your point about Senate, Awad is up in Ashburn from Richmond,
06:36and he actually came up to me and complimented us for the Senate interview.
06:40He said how much he enjoyed it, said you really felt like you got to know the person,
06:43and I think he played some of that on his show in Richmond, which was cool.
06:46And to his credit, Awad asked a good question to Dan Quinn today about the red zone drills
06:53because we've seen so much red zone.
06:56So the question was relatively simple.
06:58It was like, you know, what do you think of Jaden in the red zone?
07:00Because over the years, Jaden has performed at a really high level if you break out his red zone stats.
07:04And DQ gave a long bite, a long answer, but the phrase that stuck with me was he was talking
07:10about ball placement,
07:11and we talked about that Yankoff catch.
07:13Yes.
07:13The Terry McLaurin catch yesterday was pretty damn incredible.
07:16The one that they.
07:17Yeah, there's been a number of them, but those catches are awesome,
07:22but the placement of the ball is also incredible.
07:26Yeah.
07:26And the line DQ said that stuck with me, he said, that's not luck.
07:31No, no.
07:31And I think people need to understand the skill involved in trying to –
07:36people love the phrase, like, drop it in the bucket.
07:39When you're doing that in condensed spaces where defensive lines are able to get to you that much faster,
07:45it's impressive.
07:47The physics of a pass is something that's astronomical to me.
07:52So he threw a pass today.
07:54He threw the ball from the – I think he might have been on the right hash.
07:57He threw it to the left side line.
07:59And when he let the ball go, I saw a receiver underneath that was wide open, okay?
08:06And I'm like, oh, he overthrew it.
08:09And then you see the DB coming right behind that receiver,
08:12and the ball went just a foot or two over that DB's head,
08:17and Terry came right back in the end.
08:19The way he – when you're hitting a moving target,
08:26you to understand where to throw the ball to so those guys can mesh,
08:29the ball and the player can mesh, and put the right arc on it, is magnificent.
08:33He does it at a consistent basis, which is amazing to me.
08:37So I don't know what kind of training he does to get it done consistently, but –
08:42Some of it's God-given, but some of it is the work he puts in.
08:45Yeah, he's better than other people doing it.
