00:00Ilham Centre Research Chief Yusri Ibrahim says seat negotiations will be a key question
00:06if Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional cooperate in the Melaka state election.
00:11Yusri said BNPN cooperation in Johor and Negeri Sembilan was easier to manage
00:16because UMNO was dominant, while PAS was willing to play a supporting role
00:21by allowing UMNO to contest more seats.
00:24However, he said Melaka's political landscape was different,
00:27as both UMNO and PAS had reason to argue that they were in the stronger position.
00:33In the 2021 Melaka election, UMNO led BN to a landslide victory,
00:38winning most seats and forming the state government.
00:41But after GE15 in 2022, BN lost all six parliamentary seats in Melaka,
00:47while PN won three, with PAS taking Tanga Batu and Jasin,
00:51and Bersatu winning Masjid Tanah.
00:54Yusri said that if parliamentary votes were broken down by state constituencies,
00:59PN was far ahead of BN by 10 seats to four.
01:02This raised the question of whether PAS would be as generous in giving up seats
01:07as it was in Johor and Negeri Sembilan,
01:10and whether UMNO would concede more seats to PAS while leading the Melaka government.
01:15PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang said BN and PN could reach a different type of understanding for Melaka,
01:22while Melaka BN Chairman Abdul Rauf Yusof said BN was open to cooperation under a BN Plus formula.
01:29PAS has previously announced its intention to contest 16 of Melaka's 28 state seats,
01:35including Tanjung Bidara, which is held by Abdul Rauf.
