A Gelada is a unique primate known as the “bleeding-heart monkey” because of the distinctive red patch of skin on its chest. Found only in the highlands of Ethiopia, geladas live among rocky cliffs and mountain grasslands, forming some of the largest social groups of any primate.
Unlike most monkeys, geladas are primarily grass eaters. They spend much of their day grazing on grasses, seeds, roots, and flowers using their specialized hands to search through vegetation. Their powerful social bonds and complex communication include facial expressions, gestures, and a wide range of vocal sounds.
