00:36It is pretty unprecedented to have the ANMF and the union actually back this pay increase
00:42and for it to be defeated.
00:44Under the deal, nurses would have received an extra 16% pay by mid-2028.
00:50The government insists that's the best it can do.
00:53We care about our nurses. We want them to have a pay increase but we also care about taxpayers.
00:58Negotiations have already played out over more than a year.

01:13As both sides prepare to head to the employment tribunal to begin arbitration.
01:18The move to arbitration comes with the level of risk for the nurses.
01:22While they'll make their case for more gains, there's no guarantee the independent umpire
01:26will agree or even uphold their original offer.
01:29And the process could delay pay rises by months or even years.
