00:03The cricketing fraternity was in mourning following the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers
00:07on July 17th, 2026. On Wednesday, July 29th, the legend was honoured with a state funeral
00:14in his native Barbados. Many continue to pay tribute to the late West Indian all-rounder
00:19since his death. That includes veteran cricket commentator Dr. Joseph Reds Pereira.
00:23Well, it was indeed a moving ceremony. Very emotional at times. One gets the impression
00:37that the prime minister who spoke without the script was just outstanding and hit all the
00:44main points as one of the leading prime ministers of the region.
00:50Dr. Pereira was touched by the fact that many former superstars were also present to say
00:55goodbye to the late Sir Gary. That included the man who overhauled the great man's previous
01:00highest score of 365 at test level.
01:03Great to have had Brian Lara and Sir Clive Lloyd there, among the other great West Indians, and
01:13a fitting tribute, well executed by all the planners. And where the rains might have been falling
01:22throughout the activity at Kensington, it was a nice bright day and a great end to a great
01:34life. Fitting of a Caribbean hero.
01:38Sir Garfield Sobers smashed six sixes of Malcolm Nash in an over in English County Cricket.
01:44Plus, he had other feats worth remembering, which a cricket cornissaire like Dr. Pereira too
01:49would have at the back of his mind.
01:50No need to mention all the runs and all the wickets and all the many splendid performances all over the
02:00world.
02:01But ready and truly, you would have been guilty of a major faux pas if you didn't listen, if you
02:13didn't follow, once you were involved in cricket.
02:17Some saw it as symbolic when West Indies beat Pakistan in the first test in Taruba by 90 runs on
02:24what would have been the 90th birthday of Sir Garfield Sobers.
