00:00what's up guys please subscribe we are not so far from 1000 subscriber
00:05let's reach it as soon as possible comment and like the video and share it with your friends
00:12that would help me a lot i made a video about migrating gen 2 from the profile 17.1 to
00:20the
00:21profile 23 and i discovered recently that split usr which is the profile that i chose is
00:33deprecated as you can see here this is the page from gen 2's wiki for split usr which is for
00:42the
00:42legacy systems which is what i chose as a profile for my system if we run a select profile list
00:55we will know what profile we are using and in my case it goes within the category
01:01split usr despite being hardened and se linux which i'm gonna keep for my configuration
01:10in your case you can choose the one that we're gonna or the one that's similar to what we're gonna
01:19migrate to in my case i need to choose the one that's hardened se linux but without split usr so
01:28this is the profile that i chose there is another way to know whether you have split usr or merged
01:37usr
01:37merged usr is the main structure of the root file system of almost any distribution nowadays and most of
01:49the distributions are migrating to it for instance alpine linux used to have split usr but starting from
01:58the version 3.23 it is automatically migrating to merge usr i guess lacquer is the only distribution that's
02:09still using split usr i don't know about their migration plans we will see in the future
02:18to know whether you are using split usr to know whether you are using split usr or merge usr on
02:24your system
02:25aside from the method of a select profile list you run ls al usr and we can see that the
02:38output is like this
02:40whereas when we run the same command on a distribution that has merge usr like this one which is arch
02:50we can see
02:51this output lib has a symbolic link or lib64 wait
03:05yes let me run the same command on the root file system we can see that sbin this is the
03:16sign of merge usr as
03:20well as this this symbolic links this also and this they are within slash usr they all become
03:31became there slash bin slash lib slash sbin and whatnot whereas when we run ls dash al slash like this
03:43we have on this legacy based system no symbolic link to slash usr there is a page on gentle wiki
03:57for
03:58the migration process
04:05so it says here uh if you chose merge usr
04:13oh yeah if merge usr is being used to perform an upgrade to a 23.0 profile open rc users
04:22must run this
04:23post migration while systemd users must run this pre-migration since i'm using open rc and i finished
04:35the upgrade to 23 profile i can run this now if you are using systemd you cannot
04:48do what i did in the video of the migration or the upgrade of the profile without doing this first
04:58so we run three command in case we have it i think i don't yes i do this is the
05:10output it's to show the structure it says here here is an overview of the file system before the migration
05:18let's surround this command i guess i will
05:28do an ssh connection connection connection here to keep the initial structure and show you how it
05:38becomes after doing the process so we run sudo this one
05:53it is highly recommended to migrate to merge usr why here let's take a look at what we have
06:02let's script y and enter here now we run merge usr
06:12dash dash dry run without root privileges there may be some
06:26required things to do if i'm not mistaken or issues to resolve let's run this command like this
06:37i guess we have no problem so far for the requirement for the required directories let's run sudo merge
06:50usr usr all right so the script has finished running let's see what we got by running the same command
07:04now we have symbolic links between sbin and then slash usr slash bin is that what we are supposed to
07:13have let's run let's run the same command no compare it to another distribution that has such feature
07:28yes usr bin has been exactly
07:35lib lib lib64 this one has lib64 this one has lib only and i guess there is nothing wrong with
07:45that
07:46now we can change the command is select profile to set it to the one that is merged usr we
07:54have as i told you
07:58a profile with split usr we can now by running a select profile list
08:09and i have the hardened se linux variant
08:14set here in your case make sure you choose the one that you want and matches with your previous
08:21configuration if it is normal multi lib but with split usr you choose no multi lib this one if it
08:35is
08:35systemd you have so many of them here anyway if it is systemd it must become this one but before
08:42you do
08:43the migration of the version of the profile you need to run these commands that i ran now so the
08:50next
08:50command should be uh sudo is select pro file set
09:05should be this one without split usr yes like this enter password since it is root
09:22all right if we check again it should be set with an asterisk next to the choice blue asterisk here
09:33and
09:34here sorry here is the choice of the profile in my case in your case needs to be similar to
09:44what was
09:44before but without split usr we can now run this command emerge it's for updating the packages this is the
09:57tough command in my case because it's been a while since the last time i updated
10:03the packages of my system and every time i update it's tricky since some packages fail to
10:11update i keep skipping some of them let's try anyway and see if this migration fixes some of the issues
10:19that
10:19i have that i have otherwise i may need to run the command with skipping the packages that cause the
10:26conflict
10:27yes it's apache first it's apache i guess i have a problem
10:38with also qt base something qt base6 i guess it also says here that there is a problem with my
10:46world file
10:48i'm considering making a video about cleaning the world file let's see if there is a command of skipping
11:01no let's skip and take this package
11:10like this paste and then space here you may not need to do this especially if you're not facing the
11:22same issue if you do or with other packages as long as they are not dependencies for other packages
11:29you can skip them otherwise you need to find a solution for them enter i do not memorize the syntax
11:36i'm sorry for that it's exclude here exclude the other problems may appear anytime soon the ones
11:45related to qt base and whatnot i have also an issue related to virtual box i wasn't able to update
11:52it
11:53update it to the newest version it's probably 7.0 instead of 7.2
12:01yes qt base i unmerged or removed qt base6 it still keeps getting pulled by the update of virtual box
12:18version 7.2 i masked that version and i guess the command will work now
12:35i guess we are ready to run the command i removed the packages that are causing the conflicts and
12:41prevent the update
12:50so we have
12:54202 packages to be processed with almost 2 gigabytes it's in my case because it's been a while since the
13:01last time i ran the command that updates the system let's press y and enter the only thing that's left
13:07from the steps that are described in the this one is
13:15this error is because i need to mount partition boot partition it's not auto mounted
13:24so i need to mount it never mind it let's run the last command to finish this whole process
13:31it's about removing the package uh sudo mount slash dev slash sda1 boot
13:44like this lsblk and i have also a dedicated partition for efi which is slash dev slash sda2
13:55we can now run this command
14:00let's remove the script that we run or that we run to do the migration
14:12like this
14:17let's press y here and enter
14:22and it sounds like it is working and since we have
14:33some packages starting to install i guess i can assume that this command is successfully running
14:44and i can sound sign out take care
