00:00What do you see right now? Two people just running forward and clicking? Well, so did I.
00:04But there's actually a lot of science behind sword PvP in Minecraft.
00:07And in order to learn everything, I asked the person who literally created the number one PvP practice map to
00:13help me.
00:14So you've come to learn the art of sword PvP.
00:17This is Theobald the bird, and today he's gonna teach us everything he knows,
00:21including some super secret knowledge only the pros use, so watch till the end.
00:25You were in one video of mine, like a combos video, and people in the comments noticed,
00:29they were like, wait a second, it's the bird.
00:31Alright, here we go, this is like, to see what level I'm at.
00:34Walk in.
00:35Walk in, chat.
00:36The good thing is I do play sword decent amount, unlike the other game, it's like UHC.
00:42I just did a video with FairAMC on that.
00:45He actually recommended me to you.
00:47No, you to me.
00:48Oh, hell yeah.
00:49I'm cooked.
00:51So bro definitely knows what he's doing.
00:53With the hours I'm at, and the coaching I've done, I would hope so.
00:56I would hope so too.
00:58That was, well, you're my coach right now, so.
01:01Oh my gosh.
01:02You are maintaining your health though, wow.
01:04Yeah, I know, I'm healthy, I eat my vegetables.
01:07What's your favorite vegetable?
01:10Brussels sprouts.
01:11Oh really?
01:12Yeah, like fry that, fry that in bacon grease.
01:15Oh my gosh.
01:17Yeah.
01:17You know what I'm, you know what I'm saying?
01:19That's how I make them too, yeah.
01:21I used to not like them, but once I tried that method.
01:24Yeah, no, I've had some pretty bad Brussels sprouts, but like, the highs are very high.
01:29You know what I'm saying?
01:30Yeah.
01:31I like sword PvP just because it's a lot more laid back compared to some other modes.
01:36Crystal.
01:37Yeah.
01:38Oh yeah.
01:38Bro's cloaking me, you have 11 health.
01:40Oh my gosh.
01:41Guys, if you don't know Theo, like, this is, I mean, this is a good example of how good bro
01:45is.
01:45That's why he's here.
01:47Oh, I mean, I think you have a lot of, like, the mechanics down, like the aiming and W-tapping
01:52and everything.
01:53Yeah.
01:53It's a lot of, I feel like a lot of people don't realize how, like, I guess, cerebral of
01:59a game mode sword PvP is.
02:01Right.
02:01Like, with decision making and, um, how to play in certain trades, like when to back out.
02:08Oh my gosh.
02:10Well, I won one out of like four or something.
02:15All right, so how I normally coach people is I do some fights with, like, OBS, like,
02:21replay buffer or whatever, and I go back and I clip stuff and then I kind of show what
02:26happens in the fights and what I'm, like, seeing from you and, like, situations where
02:31you can do something better.
02:32So I have some clips just from these past games that I've played.
02:36I'm noticing a lot of habits that will kind of hinder you, I guess, for playing the best
02:41you can.
02:42One of the things I'm seeing from you, your kind of default mode, I guess, is just holding
02:46W, like, going straight into trades, which is, it's fine.
02:50It's, it's a good option, but it's only, like, one of many options, you know?
02:54Okay.
02:54Um, I, I want to encourage you to think of sword PvP as, like, a game of rock, paper,
03:00scissors, where everything has a counter and if one thing is not working, it means you should
03:04be doing a different option, I guess.
03:06If every trade, you hold W into me, like, every trade, that's what you're doing.
03:11It's basically the same as if we were playing a best of 10 rock, paper, scissors and you
03:15just played rock, like, three times in a row.
03:18Like, I'm just going to start playing paper, you know?
03:19Yeah, that makes sense.
03:20Um, that's what was kind of happening a lot here.
03:23So after I hit you away, I already see you, like, still holding W, you just jump straight
03:27in.
03:27Yeah.
03:28Regardless of the situation, like, no matter what, that's, that was just your, like, default
03:32mode.
03:32So all I was doing here is just, I wait for you to jump in and then I get a
03:36free crit,
03:37you know?
03:37So would you say, like, a lot of, uh, each game can depend a lot on just the enemy's
03:42play style throughout the game?
03:44Yeah, no, totally.
03:45Totally.
03:46And that's why it's, like, so important in sword PvP to be able to, like, adapt on the
03:50fly, I guess, to what the other person's doing and also know what options you have.
03:55If all you know is hold W and hit the other guy as early as possible, um, you're just
04:00going to lose someone to someone who holds S in crits, you know?
04:03That's a good point because a lot of people watching probably think that's all you do.
04:07Yeah, let's, let's keep playing and I'll, I'll, um, point stuff out as it happens.
04:12So you say you can counter when someone's just playing aggressive.
04:15How do you actually counter that?
04:17Just walk back or what?
04:18In sword, a lot of how trades go, um, depends on who gets, like, the first crit.
04:24Two players playing perfect tier one gameplay at the very top level.
04:28Between those two players, like, the outcome of that fight, it will most likely come down
04:33to who gets first crits in a lot of these trades.
04:36Not to say that you can't still win trades when you get crit first, because you absolutely
04:40can.
04:40You're still at a disadvantage.
04:42Counter to me holding S in critting is just push forward like you're, you're going to
04:45come in and then hold S randomly.
04:48And you'll, you'll make me jump in because you, I think you're just holding W.
04:51Yeah, you can, you can play for baits, but also if I'm, if I'm holding S, you can just
04:55hold W for more than you usually would.
04:58And also then just try to get the free crit.
05:00You can just like kind of overshoot, but that, then that loses to me holding W and three
05:04blocking you, you know?
05:05Yeah.
05:05It's just all a big rock, paper, scissors.
05:07Oh my gosh.
05:09Like when, when we're in the neutral game where we're not actually fighting each other,
05:12there's no advantage one way or the other.
05:14Yeah.
05:14Your three options are undershooting where you just hold W and try to three block.
05:18Like as soon as you get in range overshooting where you hold W for longer.
05:23Cause you're, you're calling out like their bait or baiting, which, which beats out undershooting.
05:28This is a lot easier to understand than crystals.
05:30So I think I can memorize those three.
05:35Yeah.
05:35So like right there, you baited me, you saw how I went there and you got a free hit because
05:39of it.
05:39Like you won that trade.
05:40So the other thing to make sure, um, I w I want you to understand, um, I see a lot
05:46of people when they're, when they're baiting or like in the, in the neutral game, they spend
05:50their time going side to side instead of forward and back.
05:53I mean, side to side isn't bad, but it shouldn't be the only thing you do because basically if,
05:58if I go side to side, it's not actually changing the spacing.
06:01Like the spacing is what matters.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Uh, if you're, if you're going side to side, you're basically just praying for me to whiff,
06:07which against a good enough player is, isn't going to happen reliably.
06:12So like, look how far you are.
06:13And I want you to pay attention to how far away I jump right here.
06:17Right here is when I jump pretty far, really far, like almost eight blocks away.
06:22So if in this situation, you literally just stopped holding W or held us even, I'm, I'm
06:29missing this by a mile, but because I know you're holding W this crit works.
06:33Cause I'm not, I'm not aiming where you are.
06:35I'm aiming where you're going to be.
06:37Oh, okay.
06:38So this is, this is the point of baiting.
06:40Cause yeah, again, if you're holding W here, my crit lands.
06:43If you're holding S, um, I'm missed by a mile.
06:46If this is the Rasplin that I see on my screen, draw a square.
06:50That's me.
06:50This is, this is Rasplin that I see on my screen.
06:53This is where you are on my screen.
06:55Yeah.
06:56And this is where you are on your screen.
06:58On your screen, it takes time to communicate to that, to the server.
07:01And then even more time for the server to communicate that to me.
07:05So actually, this is actually inaccurate.
07:06This is where you are on the server.
07:08And then this is where you are on my screen.
07:11So it doesn't just depend on your ping or just my ping.
07:15It depends on both of our pings.
07:17So basically what this means is that when you're holding W towards me, you, you can reach
07:23me from further.
07:24Cause you're already close enough on your screen.
07:25Like Minecraft doesn't care about where you are on the server.
07:28As long as you're not some like crazy distance away.
07:31I see people who are just standing still while I'm already jumping at them.
07:36And then they're like getting confused while they're, they're outreach.
07:38It's like, cause I made the decision first.
07:40It's not that I have more reach.
07:42It's just that I started, I committed before you did.
07:44And that can be the advantage of playing aggro.
07:47If they're not ready to back up and counter.
07:48Yeah.
07:49Yeah, exactly.
07:50It all depends on what the other person's doing.
07:52That is an interesting perspective.
07:54Sword PVP is not just as simple as it looks.
07:56There's counters to everything.
07:58It's so complex.
08:00It's so complex.
08:00It's why I have so much fun playing it and also teaching it.
08:03Cause I think a lot of people look at it and they just see two people mashing space bar
08:08and jumping at each other.
08:10Um, when there's a lot more going on behind the scenes, like strategy wise and decision
08:15making wise.
08:16So like when you, when you get comboed, you have basically two options, hold W and jump
08:20reset or back out.
08:21And when you're the one comboing, it's your job to react and like predict what the other
08:26person's doing.
08:27So if I am comboing someone and I know they like to jump reset, I'm going to start S tapping
08:32on all my hits.
08:33And then if they see that I'm S tapping, they're like, Oh, he's holding S. I can just back out
08:38for free.
08:39Um, real quick.
08:40Uh, I just want you to combo me.
08:41I'm going to hold W and I want you to just hold a combo with only your W key.
08:45No S.
08:47So one thing I'm seeing from you is you're hitting at like this speed swing, swing in
08:55the air or like swing at the ground.
08:56So you can see your attack indicator.
08:58You don't have to swing at a hundred percent.
09:00You can swing at 90%.
09:01Oh yeah.
09:02I heard about that.
09:03I think that was from your video.
09:04I heard about that.
09:05Yeah.
09:05Yeah, exactly.
09:06You can hit me like this fast and that is so much more knockback and so much more damage.
09:12I want you to, yeah, I want you to try that.
09:14Yeah, now you're comboing.
09:15Yeah.
09:16Now you're cooking.
09:17Oh my gosh.
09:17I cannot reach you at all.
09:19What?
09:19That is so crazy how much of a difference just the timing made.
09:21Because now I feel like I have more reach.
09:23That's insane.
09:24You want to see that for my POV?
09:26Yes.
09:26Yeah.
09:26Let's see what it looks like.
09:28It was like, it's an instant difference.
09:30See, look at that.
09:31You just look like you're cheating.
09:32Yeah, that looks pretty good.
09:34Look like a pro now.
09:34I told Clown Pierce the same thing and it was like life-changing for him.
09:38How do I feel right now?
09:40Yo, it's nighttime.
09:42We've been in this dude's that long.
09:45Do you aim at people's faces?
09:47Because I think that gets more reach or is that?
09:50Yeah.
09:50Yeah.
09:51It's real.
09:51Definitely.
09:52I think a lot of people will always aim at their head and then in these close situations,
09:57all of a sudden you're swinging over my head, you know?
09:59Oh yeah.
10:00So you just need to make sure you adjust your aim for the knockback that you're taking.
10:04Like you look down when I hit you.
10:06It's not really as important when we're like really close like this.
10:10Because whether I aim here or aim here, I'm still hitting you.
10:13I'm swinging here, I can't hit you.
10:15If I aim here, I can.
10:16Oh, that's a good test because you can see I can't see it now and now I can.
10:20Can't?
10:20Can.
10:21Aiming at my head isn't going to help.
10:22It's all about just aiming level.
10:24That's how you get the max like lateral reach, I guess.
10:27Here's another thing I want to demonstrate.
10:29Like this is another really good visual example of knockback.
10:32So what I want you to do, I want you to just hold W and space bar without hitting me
10:37and
10:37just like sprint jump at me.
10:40Yeah, like this.
10:41What?
10:41So when I hit you down, like you take zero knockback and you can just jump immediately
10:47again.
10:48You see this?
10:49Yeah.
10:49So this is a good situation for you because you're going straight into the ground.
10:52But if I switch up my timing and hit as you're jumping, look at this.
10:57This is rising knockback.
10:59Whoa.
10:59And this situation is huge for me.
11:02The less momentum that you have towards me and the more I have towards you, like the
11:05more reach I'm going to have.
11:07So like this is like the most reach that I can possibly get on you.
11:10Like this is like the ultimate free real estate situation.
11:14Yeah.
11:14When you're like getting hit with rising knockback and you're still holding W.
11:18It's like just really easy to combo you.
11:21Like, yeah.
11:22Yeah.
11:22Look out for those situations where you can hit me with rising knockback.
11:26Yeah.
11:26Those situations I'm going to be backing out because I don't want to keep holding W in
11:30the in a situation where I'm already screwed.
11:32So when you can predict that I'm going to be hit with rising knockback, that's a hit you
11:36want to just sprint jump in.
11:37And it's daytime again.
11:39We've been here for a whole Minecraft day.
11:4224 hours.
11:44And yeah, and sometimes you just got to go for it.
11:46Like you can't, you can't always play reactively.
11:48Like it, um, again, if, if two people are jumping in for a crit, you want to be the first
11:53one jumping.
11:55Yeah, like that.
11:55Like I was, I was thinking you're going to keep sitting there and you didn't yell it.
12:00You see how fast I can sprint hit with my fist.
12:03Yeah.
12:03Oh wait.
12:04Why did I never know this?
12:06I'm looking at the crosshair thing.
12:08Your fist is faster reload time.
12:10Yeah.
12:12You didn't know.
12:13I thought the sword was just the same as your hand.
12:16Like I know an ax is longer, but not the hand.
12:19Okay.
12:20That's funny.
12:21Another thing we learned.
12:22Guys, if you've learned something in this video, subscribe and also subscribe
12:25to Theo's channel because he has a channel too.
12:30Right here.
12:31Yes.
12:32Yes.
12:32Like that.
12:33You see it.
12:33You see it.
12:34I was like third hit.
12:35I feel like he's going to back out because he has been.
12:38I'm just going for the crit.
12:40Exactly.
12:40That is exactly what you should do here.
12:42We're learning.
12:44Again, I want you to see this from my screen.
12:47So, you know, like how, how this looks.
12:49Cause so you can recognize it when people do it to you.
12:51Jump in right after the third hit.
12:53You predict me and now I'm, I'm just screwed.
12:55I'm screwed.
12:56You're like seven blocking.
12:57It looks like I'm reaching.
12:59What?
13:00Like, look at that.
13:01Oh my God.
13:02Literal seven block reach all because you predicted when I'm backing out.
13:05And then in this situation, my, my only play, cause I can't just keep holding S.
13:09You're just going to keep crit shaning me.
13:11My only play is to start holding W again, switch to scissors or paper or whatever.
13:15You know?
13:15Yeah.
13:16If you're playing, uh, fighting a good player and you predict them backing out and you get
13:20a couple of crits in.
13:21Yeah.
13:21You can already know that their only move is start to start holding W again.
13:24So you can start comboing that.
13:26You can predict me switching it up.
13:27So like, those are my favorite combo clips is when I predict someone back out and then
13:31I predict them holding W again and keep them in a combo.
13:34Yeah.
13:34And to that casual viewer, they wouldn't even be thinking about it like that.
13:37But to someone who knows how to play sword, they'd be like, Oh, they just predicted
13:40them spot on type of thing.
13:42It's, it's a whole mind game.
13:43It's a whole mind game.
13:44When you, when you pay attention, um, to your gameplay and pay attention to what the other
13:49person's doing and how it counters you, that's how you can get better.
13:52Probably the last big thing.
13:55And you've already been doing a good job of this.
13:57What we've talked about is like the neutral game like this.
14:00And also when you have me in a combo, when you're like punishing me for your mistake and
14:04you're holding a combo.
14:05The last thing I want to talk about is how you get to those positions, like how you start
14:09those combos.
14:10And one of the best ways to do that is with a hit select.
14:13And basically what hit selecting is you hit me first, um, and I hit you immediately after
14:19like that.
14:20So there are two reasons why this is a really good strategy.
14:23So the first reason is when you hit someone in Minecraft reduces your velocity by, um, 40%,
14:30I think.
14:31But when you hit select people, so again, you wait for them to hit you first and then you
14:37hit them, you're hitting them while you're taking knockback, my hit is going to reduce
14:42the KB.
14:43So like the earlier after you hit, um, that I hit the more knockback I'm going to reduce
14:48with my hit basically.
14:50So then here is the second reason why it's so, so good.
14:54And this is like a few bald exclusive reason that I don't hear people talk about nearly
14:59enough.
14:59This is like the basis of like probably 80% of my decision-making in sword PVP of like
15:05when to go in and when to back out.
15:07Um, so take, take a look at this.
15:09I'm hit selecting Rasplin.
15:11I'm waiting for him to hit me first.
15:13When you hit me, I take knockback and then I hit you second.
15:17And I want you to pay attention to who touches the ground first.
15:20I touch the ground first, which means I can hold W and get momentum first.
15:24So I'm going to outreach you on the next hit.
15:26It means I can jump before you.
15:28It means like, this is like free real estate for me.
15:31So if I hit select you and I get like a stun, meaning that you can't hit me back because
15:36I'm out of range.
15:37So, uh, it can be both good to be first to initiate as well as second as a hit select.
15:43Yes.
15:44Wow.
15:44We've been in here so long.
15:46We're just glowing now.
15:47And it's nighttime again.
15:49Yeah.
15:50Uh, yeah.
15:51I'm telling you this not because I want you to go into every trade and then just wait because
15:55that's how you get crit chained.
15:57That's how you get outreached.
15:58Again, it's rock, paper, scissors.
16:00Like you can't just play scissors every time.
16:02Yep.
16:02I see people do that and they get destroyed.
16:04But what hit selecting is good for is anytime, like after a crit or anytime you find yourself
16:10in these closer than three block situations where if you hit me and I hit you right after,
16:15yeah, just do it.
16:15Like I, I get to touch the ground first and I get to start a combo if you're still holding
16:19W.
16:19So it can be like a turnaround type of move.
16:22Well, yeah.
16:22Yeah.
16:23Right.
16:23So that means if I'm close enough to get another hit after that, I'll stay in and push
16:28in and try to get another hit.
16:29If I'm like this far to where I know after your hit, I'm not going to be able to reach
16:34you.
16:34I'm just going to hold S for that hit and, and back out before you can even start anything.
16:39So then could you like hit select for multiple hits in a row till you get the right distance
16:43then?
16:44Yeah.
16:44No, that happens a lot.
16:45Um, especially when someone's like punish critting.
16:48This is an example of like multiple hits selects in a row.
16:51You see?
16:52Until I get the right distance.
16:53Keep doing it.
16:55That, you see that, that hit right there where you couldn't reach me.
16:58Yeah.
16:58So like if you back out on that hit, then you just like won the trade basically.
17:03But the second that I noticed that my hit goes through first and your hit goes through
17:08second, I know that you're going to be touching the ground first.
17:10Even if it doesn't look like it on my screen, um, because of ping, I know that you're going
17:14to be touching the ground first and I'm automatically holding S out of that and not
17:17letting anything.
17:18So you just got to react and be on top of your reactions and know what to do with every
17:23single reaction.
17:25Reaction and prediction.
17:26Cause remember like if, if I hit you from this far, um, and you're holding W in, I know
17:31like, I basically know without a doubt, you're going to be able to hit me again.
17:34Yep.
17:35Like just, just hold, hold W and hit me after I hit you.
17:39Like, yeah.
17:40Yep.
17:40Like I already know.
17:41So if I'm, if I'm close enough, I can keep, keep staying in and try to get another
17:46one.
17:46Yeah.
17:47And then as, as soon as you hit me out, that's why I'm, I'm backing out.
17:51So that's the hit select tactic.
17:52We have learned a lot.
17:53Yeah.
17:54All of the things that I'm teaching you, like these are automatic for me.
17:57I can just do all this on autopilot.
17:59Like I can make these decisions.
18:00I saw, but when you're first, yeah, exactly.
18:02You have to, you have to allocate like a lot more brain power to like make it conscious.
18:07You have to make it a conscious effort, but the more you do that, the easier it'll get
18:11over time.
18:12And eventually it'll just be automatic.
18:14And at that point you can start taking that brain power that you were using to learn consciously.
18:19Yep.
18:19And you can put that to higher level things.
18:24Oh, so close.
18:27We've learned a lot and I'm just glad that I know how it works more than anything.
18:32So yeah.
18:34Theo ball, the bird for teaching me today and teaching all the people as well.
18:37Cause I'm sure people learned a lot.
18:38If you guys want to learn more, go check out his channel.
18:40Yeah.
