00:04I really wanted to live in LA. I wanted to find an agency to start modeling.
00:13This is the building where the Ford agency is. I think it was the eighth floor.
00:23It's almost like I can see myself like outside of my body.
00:30I've noticed I do that though. Like if there's like some sort of trauma involved, I really do like just
00:35detach.
00:39Jared Leto.
00:46He was standing to the left of those double doors.
00:52My mom noticed him as we were going up the stairs.
00:58I kind of saw him look over. He hung up the phone and just like walked right in behind us.
01:05He brought up that he had won a major award.
01:08Does anybody want to try it out for size?
01:11You can if anybody wants to fondle.
01:14Yeah, here.
01:18He was like, oh, yeah, you're going to get signed.
01:20Definitely. You're so beautiful.
01:23And he asked for my email so he can invite me and my mom to his like Oscar party.
01:29I bet this is the first, the first person to ever give their Oscar away for an orgy in the
01:36press room.
01:39And how old were you at this time?
01:40I was 16 at the time and he was 42.
01:46He did email me and then very quickly it turns into this whole like sexual thing on the phone.
01:52Saying all these like things that you shouldn't say to a child.
01:57Thank you very much and congratulations.
02:02I was, I was 17.
02:0517.
02:06As a 14 year old girl with a little, with a little crush on him.
02:09I was very excited to see Jared Leto.
02:11I think that was the first time I ever met a celebrity.
02:13Oh my God, do you know who that is? That's Jared Leto.
02:20He had invited me to his house.
02:23Asked me to come meet him in his hotel.
02:25Jared Leto cordially invites you to a celebration.
02:28Sending an invite out to a lot of models.
02:31I ran to the autograph table.
02:34You know, most young girls saw him very much as a heartthrob.
02:43Wait, but this is problematic.
02:46There's a whole population who don't know who he truly is.
02:50You really just chose to take your power and abuse it.
02:54Alarms started going off in my head.
02:56This is not what I came here for.
02:58By the time I get back, I would like your clothes to be off.
03:01It doesn't matter what your age is.
03:02It doesn't matter if you're underage.
03:03And that's when I realized he was in his early 30s.
03:06He was 34.
03:07He was 42 at the time.
03:09And then he just goes, if you're going to sleep here, you're going to wake up with a dick in
03:14your ass.
03:31People are like, what did you hope to accomplish with your book?
03:33Two things.
03:34I want to be proud of it and I want to not get sued.
03:36Yeah.
03:37Touch and go there for a little while.
03:40All right.
03:41Ready?
03:41Mm-hmm.
03:42Who's Jared Leto?
03:44So Jared Leto is an actor at the very highest realms of the industry.
03:55He won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, in which he played a trans woman.
04:04And the Oscar goes to Jared Leto.
04:12That sealed his status as a household name in one of the power players in Hollywood.
04:22He started out as a very well-known TV actor.
04:26In my so-called life, his role, Jordan Catalano, was the school dreamboat.
04:34A generation of women, and I think some men, were mesmerized by those blue eyes.
04:43He's unique in that he's not only a high-profile actor, he's also an entrepreneur.
04:50And he's an investor.
04:51Uber, Airbnb, Spotify, Reddit.
04:54I've always been entrepreneurial ever since I sold dope as a kid.
05:00He's associated with fashion houses.
05:03And also, he's a really successful rock star with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars.
05:09Take number!
05:14Take number!
05:17Whoa, whoa, whoa!
05:40I think the first time I ever came across Jared Leto
05:43was watching Requiem for a Dream when I was a teenager.
05:47I always thought you were the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
05:52I thought he was incredible.
05:55It was a film that definitely stayed with me.
06:01Airmal is a digital weekly based in New York.
06:06It does a bit of everything, true crime, arts and culture.
06:11I've also done investigative work.
06:17I follow this DJ called Ali Teals on Instagram.
06:24In April 2025, she posted on her Instagram a screenshot of a Facebook status she'd posted
06:32originally in 2012.
06:35You're not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage in
06:40a kilt and a snow hat.
06:43She went on to say that she was underage.
06:45She was 17 at the time and that he was aware of her age.
06:50She has a big following.
06:51She's over 100,000 followers.
06:55She started getting a lot of responses from women who'd had allegedly similar experiences
07:01with Jared, which she was then posting.
07:26I was refreshing her story every few hours and I was quite stunned by the wealth of responses
07:32that she got.
07:32So, the experiences ranged from inappropriate behaviour to assault.
07:39It captured my attention and I started looking into the story.
07:52My name is Jessica Sartanart.
07:54I'm a documentary producer and journalist.
07:57I've been making documentaries for nearly 10 years, often looking into high profile people.
08:06We saw Ali's post and the reaction.
08:11This is not something you see every day.
08:15If all of this was true, these were allegations on a massive scale about a very big player in
08:22Hollywood.
08:24So, we immediately started investigating.
08:29I spoke to some of the women who wrote into Ali.
08:31I managed to track them down.
08:34I was putting down the phone and I felt a little bit sick to my stomach.
08:40Among the allegations, there was one woman, she was 18 at the time.
08:44She went over to his house and he got naked and grabbed her hand and put it on his penis
08:50and said, I want you to spit on it.
08:54I gathered all my research, put together the story.
08:59Ultimately, nine women contributed.
09:03A lot of them were very scared, which is why most of them requested anonymity.
09:09We did send a right to reply to Leto and his team and they responded expressly denying every
09:16allegation.
09:18The article went live.
09:21It was pretty much picked up worldwide.
09:25The Guardian, Italian national newspaper, Il Corriere della Sera.
09:30Actor and musician Jared Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct and predatory behavior.
09:36Allegedly, allegedly likes very young girls, teenage girls.
09:41I saw it was reported that Disney was holding crisis talks.
09:45He was meant to be playing the lead in Tron Aries.
09:48I would like you to meet Aries, the ultimate soldier.
09:53I think the crisis talks were surrounding the marketing campaign.
09:57It was a big deal.
09:58And I really thought, you know, this is gonna, this is gonna have some real life repercussions
10:03for, for Jared.
10:08When the airmail article came out, this was the first time that women had gone on the record,
10:13alleging that they had been sexually abused by Leto.
10:17We watched and waited to see what the consequences might be.
10:21So, as the days went on, I was typing in Jared Leto allegations or just Googling Jared Leto.
10:29I started seeing other news about him that was unrelated and, um, and I saw the articles
10:35surrounding the allegations start to trickle off.
10:40I thought, oh, wow, like, that's, that's it.
10:44I was, I guess I was disappointed.
10:46I was disappointed that the world didn't take my victims' allegations seriously.
10:57Within weeks, Leto started doing publicity for Tron Aries.
11:01We're in London and we're super excited.
11:04It's been a great night so far.
11:06Culminating in an appearance on top of the Piccadilly Lights as a promotional stunt for the film.
11:13A really uncomfortable truth about Hollywood is that there's now calculations being made that this is not a career ender.
11:22I think that calculation got made with Jared Leto.
11:28We can quash it, we can ride it out, we can deflect it, and, uh, six months from now, or,
11:34you know, six minutes from now, another story will come down the pike and suck up all the oxygen in
11:39the room.
11:41We were still working on our investigation in the background.
11:4540 women had written into Ali, nine women had gone on the record with Airmail.
11:53So we were really asking ourselves, how widespread was this?
11:58And how long has it been going on for?
12:04We started digging deeper.
12:08And that's when we found Etta.
12:19The first email, he just sent an image of the invitation.
12:25Jared Leto cordially invites you to a celebration.
12:32I said, I thank you for the invite, but I couldn't make it, even though I'm sure it would have
12:36been fun.
12:38And he responded, text me, and gave me his number.
12:42I didn't even consider how weird it was to be invited by a 42-year-old man at 16 to
12:48a party.
12:49Did he know you were 16?
12:52I know for sure.
12:54If not then, I did tell him a couple days later when we were texting.
13:00We texted for a couple days, and then, then he would start mostly calling.
13:08He never would call me without making it a private number.
13:13I think he did his best to make sure there was no proof.
13:19Like, at first, it was like, you know, who did you sign with?
13:22Oh, how did it go?
13:25But it quickly moved into, um, oh, well, you're a virgin.
13:30Do you have any kinks?
13:31Like, what are you interested in?
13:33Oh, can you squirt?
13:35Like, he seemed very interested in squirting.
13:39He did, at least once, mention him and I having sex at some point.
13:45How did it make you feel, him asking you questions like that?
13:48Um, I remember feeling, like, nervous.
13:52Uh, a little, like, anxious, a little uncomfortable, but, like, at the time, I remember, I had a really
13:58hard time, like, saying, like, no to things, or, like, putting boundaries up.
14:06He asked me if he could give my number to, to a friend of his.
14:10I just remember him, you know, telling me that it was, like, a business thing.
14:17And I was like, yeah, sure, whatever, that's fine.
14:21This guy, he told me his name was Christian.
14:23He would call me a lot.
14:28He wanted to hire me to shoot porn, and he was like, you know, it doesn't matter if you're
14:34underage, we'll work it out, like, you know, we'll get, like, a really nice house in the
14:39hills, you know, we'll have, like, six guys in the shower, and have them, like, come all
14:45over you.
14:48And because he would also call me from a private number, I wouldn't know sometimes if it was
14:54going to be Jared or him.
14:57And were there similarities between the types of things that Christian and Jared were saying?
15:02They both were really obsessed with mentioning the possibility of squirting.
15:09Both of them, yeah.
15:11Have you ever considered that Jared and Christian might have been the same person?
15:17I think it would not be that surprising if that ended up being the truth, you know?
15:53He would say, how old are you?
15:54You.
15:56Stephanie, come here.
15:58Come here.
16:00Give me a hug, first of all.
16:08Okay.
16:10You can let go now.
16:13What's your name?
16:15Kate?
16:15Where are you from?
16:17You're from L.A.?
16:18That's what I like about high school girls.
16:22I keep getting older than you stay the same age.
16:26All right, all right, all right.
16:28All right, all right, all right.
16:32There have been allegations swirling around Leto for decades.
16:37All the way back in 2005, there was an article in the New York Post
16:41alleging that Leto was approaching teen and underage girls
16:45at a hotel in New York and texting them.
16:49But what we were really surprised by
16:53was just how many allegations actually exist online.
16:57I counted around 120 allegations relating to highly concerning behaviour
17:03women said they had witnessed, heard about or experienced themselves.
17:08And some of these allegations dated right back to the early 2000s.
17:27Okay, well, down memory lane, right?
17:30I've got a few photos here of back in that day when I was a little bit younger.
17:39Oh, my gosh.
17:40You guys remember pictures?
17:42Everything's digital now.
17:43There's no such thing.
17:45Okay, this is definitely high school.
17:47I recognize my high school that I used to go to.
17:54Oh, my gosh.
17:55This is probably right around, like, right around the time when I met him.
18:01I look like such a baby.
18:02Looking back on these pictures, it's so crazy to...
18:06I mean, I look, yeah, I look so young.
18:15I've always been this, like, free spirit type of person.
18:20And I still actually, to this day, one of those act first, think second, you know?
18:26Just try things, and then if it works out, great.
18:28And if it doesn't, then now you know.
18:36In 2002, when I was 17, I had this job at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
18:41I worked in the mall.
18:44A group of guys came in.
18:46One of them looked familiar, so I said, oh, you look familiar.
18:50And he was like, well, what high school did you go to?
18:53And I said, oh, I went to, you know, this high school.
18:56And he was like, oh, no way, me too.
18:58His friends started laughing, and they were like, he didn't go to your high school.
19:03They were like, he's famous.
19:04This is Jared Leto.
19:06They're coughing.
19:08He has this movie coming out called Panic Room.
19:10Nobody is gonna die, man.
19:12Will you please have the balls to follow through with something?
19:16And we're in Vegas because we actually just started this band called 30 Seconds to Mars.
19:20Oh, cool.
19:22Like, that's awesome.
19:22You know, you're famous.
19:24Still didn't know he was, right?
19:25That's what you were saying all last night.
19:28So I was just showing them around and taking them through the store.
19:31And it was just, you know, like a, you know, like a fun, casual vibe.
19:35That's when Jared Leto was like, hey, like, you seem really cool.
19:38You know, can I get your phone number?
19:39Like, would you like to hang out later?
19:41Yeah, you know, I'm like, oh, cool.
19:42Like, he's a celebrity, right?
19:44I'm 17.
19:46I think that was the first time I ever met a celebrity.
19:51And so I was gonna meet up with him after work.
19:55And he asked me to come meet him in his hotel.
19:59It was really close to my work.
20:00And I pulled in and it was this dingy motel.
20:07I didn't think much of it.
20:08I just was like, oh, he's still getting ready and we're gonna meet up there and then we're
20:12gonna go out afterwards.
20:15So I knocked on the door, um, went in.
20:20I sat on the bed and he was like, hey, yeah, I'm just gonna hop in the shower real quick.
20:25Do you mind waiting?
20:26And I was like, no, of course not.
20:28Like, go finish getting ready.
20:33Okay, so he went and got in the shower.
20:36And what happened next?
20:41Um, sorry, this is where it gets hard.
20:46Oh, sorry, I had to, like, get myself together.
20:55I was sitting on the bed waiting for him to get ready.
20:56And, um, and he called, he called me and he was like, hey, like, come in here so we can
21:01talk while I'm, you know, in the shower.
21:07And so I went into the bathroom.
21:09Um, um, I don't think there was many words exchanged.
21:17And when he opened the shower curtain, he started kissing me.
21:22Uh, and then he grabbed my hand.
21:26Um, I don't even know how to say this part.
21:28But he grabbed my hand and he, I guess, started, like, touching himself with my hand.
21:33Like, using my hand to, I guess, masturbate himself with my hand.
21:40Um, and, um, alarms started going off in my head.
21:45Like, what are you doing here?
21:46Like, this is not what you came here for.
21:50And in that moment, I, I definitely realized that I was not in a great situation.
21:58You know, I'm alone in this room and, like, I didn't know what was going to happen, right?
22:05I pulled away and I was like, okay, uh, I'm, I'm going to go.
22:10He got out, put a towel on.
22:13There's a weird thing that I, I always remembered.
22:17He looked, he went outside and I remember he, like, specifically, like, looked to the left
22:22and it looked almost like seeing if there was anybody around before he let me out of the room.
22:31I'm so sorry to have some tea.
22:41We didn't, we didn't have internet in our hands, right?
22:44And I was at work, I got off work, I met up with him.
22:49And so I didn't know anything about him till after everything, when I went home.
22:54And then I looked him up on, like, a computer, you know?
22:58And that's when I realized he was in his early 30s.
23:02You know, I'm in my 40s now.
23:06And my whole life,
23:10I had viewed this event as
23:14I was a stupid girl
23:16that did something stupid,
23:18did something dumb.
23:20And so this bad thing happened.
23:24But of course it did,
23:25because
23:27I did something dumb,
23:29and so
23:30it's on me.
23:33I don't think I ever
23:35so recently
23:36ever
23:39blamed him.
23:41I always blamed me.
23:43Sick.
23:56In 2005,
23:5730 Seconds to Mars
23:58released an album
23:59called A Beautiful Lie.
24:01And on that album
24:02was a song called
24:03The Kill,
24:04which was
24:06incredibly popular.
24:22The Kill,
24:39And it really saw
24:41their entry
24:42into the mainstream.
24:44How you doing,
24:45New York City?
24:47Suddenly,
24:48Leto had access
24:49to this huge,
24:50devoted fan base,
24:51many of whom
24:53were young teenage girls.
25:07As a teenager,
25:08I was very much so
25:11a punk goth kid.
25:16I had colored hair,
25:17I wore fishnets,
25:18I wore black lipstick,
25:19I wore black nail polish.
25:22The scene
25:23was so supportive.
25:26It was just
25:27a sense of
25:28like a community.
25:30The first time
25:31I ever heard
25:3130 Seconds to Mars
25:32was on the radio,
25:34and I was
25:35instantly hooked.
25:36I was literally listening
25:38to The Kill
25:39on repeat.
25:43I saw
25:4430 Seconds to Mars
25:45at the 99X Miss Ball.
25:48My mom got me tickets.
25:51The concert was
25:52absolutely amazing.
25:56Oh, I was in heaven
25:57when I saw Jared Leto
25:58on stage
25:58as a 14-year-old girl
25:59with a little crush on him.
26:05So 30 Seconds to Mars
26:07gets off stage.
26:10They were allowing people
26:12to get autographs
26:14and meet them.
26:16I walked up to Jared Leto,
26:19told him I'm a huge fan,
26:21and I held my shirt out
26:22for him to sign,
26:23hopefully on an arm
26:25or maybe on the belly,
26:26and instead he chose
26:28to sign my shirt
26:30across my breasts.
26:32And he told me,
26:34you have a nice rack.
26:36And in that time frame,
26:39he asked his bodyguard
26:40to go ahead
26:40and take me backstage.
26:42He didn't even ask me
26:43if I wanted to go backstage.
26:44He literally looked
26:46at his security guard
26:46and said,
26:47take her, take her back.
26:50I was very short.
26:53I had braces.
26:55It was very obvious
26:56that I was a teenager.
27:00My mother,
27:01who was standing next to me,
27:03was like,
27:04that's my daughter.
27:05She's fucking 14.
27:08And he looked at her
27:09and said,
27:10it's still a nice rack.
27:17We didn't get to stay
27:18and finish the concert.
27:19My mom took me home.
27:24This was not a pleasant
27:26experience to have to go through.
27:28You should not be touching
27:29my breasts in any way,
27:31shape, or form.
27:35I was 14,
27:36and that was supposed
27:37to be a sense of community
27:38for me.
27:39Things like that aren't supposed
27:40to happen at metal shows.
27:41I'm going to cry.
27:43Things like that aren't supposed
27:44to happen
27:45when you
27:47are supposed
27:47to be enjoying yourself.
28:15It really altered
28:17my life in a real way I stopped going to concerts all together I stopped listening
28:25to that kind of music I really felt like I had been taken advantage of what turns
28:36me on I would like to answer that by asking a question what doesn't turn me
28:45on we wanted to speak to insiders from the mid-2000s so people who had spent time with
28:52Leto who had worked with him in the context of his band so we contacted hundreds of people
29:00producers crew members tour staff even bandmates and it was really really hard getting people to
29:09talk to us a lot of them were scared to speak out many had signed NDAs but then eventually we
29:18found
29:18Simon I think that's him hi Simon hi Jessica thank you so much for coming all this way okay let
29:31me
29:31introduce you to the lurkers over here speaking to me anonymously is that for fear of repercussions
29:42I don't want to be notable in this at all but I do want to do my part
29:51would I want to tell my daughter that I didn't stand up for what was right when I got an
29:58opportunity to
29:58say something let's talk about 30 seconds to Mars I worked with the band for about a decade
30:07Jared was generally very focused and hard-working very demanding he had a clear vision of what he
30:15wanted during one period of time they'd set up their recording equipment in a spare room in the
30:22house with just a desk and a few chairs a microphone a couple of packing blankets
30:34he would be texting with girls there would probably typically on a given day be about two girls that
30:42might stop by it wasn't uncommon that he would go let them in sort of point to a chair for
30:50them to sit down
30:51and possibly ignore them for about 10-15 minutes he might make a sort of rude remark
31:00maybe it might be your dirty girl aren't you the feeling was he was trying to assert control trying to
31:10assert a sense of power
31:13there was one particular instance that I clearly remember where a girl had to be dropped off by her parents
31:22this particular girl was very young looking and Jared would have been in his early 30s
31:33they took off to the bedroom when they returned and she wanted a photo with him and she tried to
31:42give him a kiss on the cheek he stopped her
31:46and wanted to make sure that the photo looked like a sort of spontaneous platonic meeting
31:53at that point she had to contact her parents to come pick her up probably only an hour had gone
31:59by
32:02she just kind of sat there the feeling in the air it felt like shame and embarrassment
32:11I just remember being really moved by it
32:17so what did you think when the allegations started to surface last year
32:24I remember reading the articles
32:28and then coming across a video that a young woman had made speaking of her time with Jared
32:36I remember her reciting some of the things Jared would say to her
32:41there was no question about it she wasn't making it up
32:46this is his language
32:49could you show me the video you're talking about
32:53I first met him when I had just turned 17 and he was 33
33:00I met him after a 30 seconds to Mars concert
33:04he had started to move from just like flirting to saying things that were more sexual
33:11in nature he literally started calling me Lolita telling me he was old enough to be my father
33:16he knew I was 17
33:19he did various things like kiss my neck touch my chest
33:24take my hand put it on top of his pants
33:27one time I was backstage with him grabbed my face
33:30and made me promise that I wasn't going to tell anyone
33:39did those behaviors that she's describing feel familiar to you
33:44it's uncanny
33:46the things she says about how he would behave with her
33:50it's upsetting
33:51it's disturbing
33:55it completely brings back memories of what I witnessed
34:12his band was having a concert
34:13I was with another girl
34:16and we were backstage
34:19I was 17
34:21it wasn't actually Jared Leto who approached me
34:24he had sent an acquaintance of his
34:27probably in his 40s
34:29he was a comedian
34:30and he told me
34:31you know Jared's seen you from wherever he is over there
34:34and he was interested in getting your number
34:37I didn't actually meet him
34:39at that venue at that time
34:40that would come later
34:43you know most young girls
34:45saw him very much as a heartthrob
34:47you know very handsome
34:48great features
34:49professionally very good at what he did
34:51as an actor as a singer
34:52he was a very magnetic person
34:56at that age I had just been coming out of
34:59a really awkward time in adolescence
35:02I had always been very very shy
35:05painfully shy
35:06I'd blush a lot
35:07I'd trip over my words
35:10it was very validating
35:11that someone like him
35:12would be interested in me at all
35:17so sometime after that concert
35:20there had been some text exchanges
35:23he had invited me to meet him
35:25at a place called the Chateau Marmont
35:27which is right there in the main area of Hollywood
35:30I had a friend with me at the time
35:32so he said go ahead and bring her
35:34it's a very kind of secluded upscale place
35:37where they cater to a lot of A-list celebrities
35:40so it was intimidating at first going in there
35:46he was at a table with friends
35:49he kind of waved us over
35:50we sat down my friend and I
35:53and just having some general banter about things
35:58we had kind of drifted into the realm to talk about the age of consent
36:02I had mentioned to him that my dad was in law enforcement
36:06that I knew with certainty that here in California
36:10the age of consent is 18
36:12he just kind of shrugged it off
36:14like it wasn't a huge concern for him
36:18and he knew at that point that you were 17
36:20oh yes he did now
36:34yeah
36:34so after that he had told me
36:38that they were about to head back to his house
36:42so he had walked in the door
36:43and I remember immediately off to the side
36:47there were these two really distinct statues
36:51from the clockwork orange
36:52and he had them
36:53there were two females
36:54and he had them arranged in like a very sexual position
37:00he had showed us where his bedroom was
37:02we had gone in
37:03we were sitting on the bed with him
37:07and so he suggested to my friend
37:09you can wait in the computer room
37:11while her and I hang out
37:14that is when things had turned sexual
37:18when my friend was in the other room
37:20is he going to put his room
37:20and now he told us
37:21how has he fallen
37:21and now he was not
37:46that he was able to walk the room
37:47and he can be locked out
37:49and he's able to go out
37:49and he was able to go out
37:50and he wouldn't let me
37:50So there was probably I would say about three or four times that I had been to his residence.
37:55There was one time in particular where I had gone over, I let him know that I was there,
38:01he opened the door and he had told me that he was in the middle of some sort of interview.
38:06So he let me in the house, I went down the hallway into his bedroom and he had made a
38:15comment of by the time I get back I would like your clothes to be off.
38:18So he had gone out, finished the interview, he had come back in the room and he said when
38:24he noticed that I was undressed, something to the effect of brave little girl.
38:29It was this theme that he kind of stuck with, wanting to see me as a younger girl.
38:37He told me I would like you to call me daddy and it was either and pretend to be a
38:43little
38:43girl or my little girl.
39:00I had so little exposure to anything sexual really at that time as a teenager.
39:07Is this what, you know, is expected when you're intimate with somebody older?
39:13Is this what they say?
39:14Is this what they do?
39:15Is this what they do?
39:16Just wondering if it was normal.
39:19As time went on, I realized more and more how scary that really was.
39:26Being that age and being so naive and vulnerable.
39:32There is no well-adjusted man in his 30s who is going to look at a teenager and think, you
39:41know, wow, she would be a great partner.
39:45The only reason to approach somebody like that is because of how easily manipulated they
39:52are.
39:53Let's talk about the lyrics.
39:56You can probably guess which lyrics I'm going to pick out of up in the air.
40:00Oh, I don't know.
40:02Surprise me.
40:02I'll wrap my hands around your neck so tight with love, love, love.
40:08Yeah.
40:09Quite erotic.
40:10Is it?
40:11Tell us a little bit more.
40:12It's funny that you would take it that way.
40:14About, well, tell us what the song's about if that's not what it is.
40:17Well, I think, what is it they say, everything is about sex except for sex.
40:24Sex is about power.
40:30In the late 2000s, Jared actually took a break from acting to focus on his band, 30 Seconds
40:36to Mars.
40:38They were really gaining a massive fan base across Europe.
40:44It's from this period that we notice a lot of videos online of Leto inviting young girls
40:51up on stage.
40:52Oh, shit, that's so crazy.
40:54And how this story goes up.
41:11Hello.
41:12Oh, hi, Brad.
41:13It's Jessica from the BBC.
41:14How are you doing?
41:16I'm good.
41:16How are you?
41:17I'm good.
41:20Brad toured with 30 Seconds to Mars around this time.
41:23And he agreed to speak with me about his experience of working with Leto.
41:30At the time I was working for them, they were a very big band, you know, headlining arenas
41:38in lots of different countries.
41:41What was the atmosphere like on tour?
41:45Very tense.
41:47Now, I've been on the road since I was a teenager, and Jared is one of the worst people I've
41:53ever
41:53worked for in any way, shape, or form.
41:58Nice to see you.
41:59Give me a hug.
42:01Give me a hug.
42:01It's been a long time.
42:11Good to see your face.
42:13We've met before.
42:15Yeah.
42:16I remember, of course.
42:17How could I forget?
42:20How could I ever forget?
42:28Did anyone on the crew feel uncomfortable about the way Jared was interacting with female
42:34fans?
42:38No one enjoyed watching that or being involved in that.
42:42If he ever asked anyone to get a phone number or anything like that, I think everyone thought
42:47that the age gap was way too big.
42:50And what sort of age range were these girls, do you think?
42:54Yeah, you were the pink hair.
42:58You were the pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair.
43:02Pink, pink, pink hair.
43:04Yeah.
43:05And it was a dirt.
43:08And it was a light.
43:09And it fell apart.
43:12And it got back up.
43:14And it fell apart.
43:22Would he ever ask for any of the fans to be brought backstage?
43:28I remember at least one or two incidents of girls coming on stage for the final song
43:34and crew members being instructed to, you know, grab those girls
43:39and invite them to come backstage after the show.
43:43And he would talk to them in his dressing room and...
43:47I couldn't tell you what happened from there.
43:52Was there anything else crew members were asked to do that made them feel uncomfortable?
43:57Whenever they would play cities that had a lot of modelling agencies,
44:01like Milan, Berlin, Paris, etc.,
44:06crew members were instructed to call up the modelling agencies
44:09and offer free tickets for the female models.
44:13They would give all of the models VIP passes
44:15and they would have a room backstage for them.
44:18I know that people involved in that did not particularly enjoy having to do that
44:23because it was all, well, I mean, calling up a modelling agency
44:27and saying we only want your female models is a little bit uncomfortable.
44:33And who requested this?
44:36That was direct from Jared.
44:43I moved to London in 2013.
44:48I went to Elite Models.
44:57There was a manager from my agency who told me that 30 Seconds to Mars
45:02had put out an invitation that we could go and see the show
45:07and then there was also a VIP meet-up afterwards that we could go to.
45:13The concert was at the O2.
45:16It was a good concert, I remember.
45:23Somehow the assistant got to me and asked if I wanted to go to an after-party at Shortage House.
45:31And I remember thinking to myself, I've never been there.
45:34I want to go. I want to see what it is.
45:37So we were eight people.
45:40Mostly just women and then Jared.
45:45I remember going to the bathroom and when I came out,
45:49he was standing, like, in the corridor.
45:53He says something and it gets me to say,
45:56do you know how old I am?
46:00And then he says no and then I lie and I say, I'm 17.
46:06At the time, I'm 19.
46:08I just remember that I felt the need to say that I'm younger than I am.
46:14He said, age is just a number.
46:17And anyway, we're in Europe.
46:27I remember speaking to the assistant.
46:29I was saying that there was the next place to go to.
46:35It was in a hotel.
46:38I was a bit drunk and my phone was dying.
46:43So I was saying, but I don't know where it is.
46:46How am I going to get there?
46:49She kept, like, pushing and saying,
46:51it's really easy.
46:53It's right over there.
46:55The assistant is a woman.
46:58So I trusted her.
47:06I get into the hotel room.
47:09It's really dark.
47:13And then I see that it's just him.
47:16Weren't there supposed to be other people?
47:19And I think he just says, no, it's just you and I.
47:23Then I'm sat there and saying, OK, well, my phone is dying.
47:27So I can't really get home from here.
47:30So I asked him if he has a phone charger.
47:34No, I don't.
47:36OK, I also don't have any cash left.
47:39Could I get some cash to get a cab home?
47:44No, I don't have any cash.
47:48I was sat in my chaise-along kind of thing.
47:51So I was kind of, like, thinking to myself,
47:53could I just sleep here?
47:57I ask him, can I just sleep here then?
48:01And then he just goes, if you're going to sleep here,
48:05you're going to wake up with a dick in your ass.
48:09And I think I ask him, like, what did you say?
48:12And he says this a few times.
48:14If you're going to sleep here,
48:15you're going to wake up with a dick in your ass.
48:22At that point, I was like, I'm not safe here.
48:28OK, I need to get out.
48:32I went to the bathroom first.
48:34And then from there, I was closer to the door.
48:44When I got out of the hotel,
48:47I remember being really angry.
48:50I was angry at myself for going into the hotel room.
48:59When I came home at, I think, six in the morning,
49:04I texted my then-best friend.
49:08And she was saying, he was threatening sexual assault.
49:11You should report him.
49:13And in my head, I was like, nah.
49:17I put myself in that situation.
49:20He didn't touch me.
49:21It was probably a misunderstanding.
49:23I was probably the only one.
49:26But I'm probably not the only one.
49:28And it's probably been a lot worse.
49:31Yeah.
49:35Do you feel like you were tricked into going to that hotel?
49:40Throughout this whole night,
49:43I told the assistant
49:45all the reasons why I shouldn't go
49:47to the next place.
49:50And every time that I had an excuse for not going,
49:54I was getting nudged to go further.
50:00The assistant knew what to say
50:02to lure me into his hotel room.
50:05It seemed that it was planned out.
50:09Never have I ever hooked up
50:10with a fan on tour.
50:13Really?
50:14Leave me there.
50:15Yeah, yeah.
50:17That's what they say.
50:18Yeah.
50:26How did staff feel about having to procure women
50:29for Jared in this way?
50:32I don't think anyone liked being involved.
50:35But it's also the kind of camp
50:37where I think everyone is slightly fearful
50:40for their job,
50:41and you don't want to say no to anything.
50:46He's not really someone you want to fuck with.
50:53He had a lot of people around
50:54that just were constantly
50:57jumping through hoops for him
50:59and doing anything he demanded.
51:03There's sort of a secret rule
51:06that you don't talk about
51:08what the creative talent does in Hollywood.
51:12There's a general sense of just
51:14turning a blind eye.
51:19not a single person spoke up.
51:23There were not only just men of his age,
51:26but also women.
51:29These dozens of people
51:31who were traveling with him,
51:33touring with him,
51:37not a single one said anything to myself
51:41about looking out for him
51:43or being concerned
51:45about how young I looked
51:46hanging around him.
51:47Nobody said anything.
51:50An enormous part of everything
51:52that we're talking about
51:53is money.
51:55In Hollywood, in music,
51:58there's a superstructure.
52:00There's layers and layers of people
52:02around the individual
52:03who are incentivized
52:05to say and do nothing.
52:07Assistance, manager, lawyer.
52:12And an unfortunate reality
52:15with these kinds of stories
52:18is that it is not uncommon
52:21for sources to be silenced.
52:24Everyone has a vested interest
52:27in all of this going away.
52:36Um, so about two years
52:38after I met him,
52:39I got a call from Jared.
52:42From what I recall,
52:43he said his lawyer
52:44was concerned about
52:46his relationships with women.
52:48Uh, he kind of, like,
52:50chuckled, laughed at that part
52:52and said that he,
52:54uh, that his lawyer
52:56wants to have all the women
52:57in his life signed NDAs.
53:00I mean, I didn't feel comfortable
53:02with it, like, right away.
53:03Um, but I was willing
53:05to, like, look at it.
53:08It didn't just cover, like,
53:11present and future.
53:12It covered things
53:13that I would have said
53:14in the past.
53:16Commencing on the date
53:17on which my association
53:18with you began,
53:19I hereby acknowledge and agree
53:21that a confidential relationship
53:24exists between you and me.
53:27It didn't seem right
53:29being able to be held liable
53:31for something that I had done
53:32previously before I even knew
53:34I wasn't allowed to speak
53:36about him.
53:37It seemed like a really
53:39great way to get sued.
53:42I never signed it.
53:44I made an excuse the first time
53:45and then just didn't respond
53:46after that.
53:55how has he gotten this far
53:57without this becoming
54:00a larger scandal?
54:02People knew about it
54:04in Los Angeles
54:05and in Hollywood.
54:09Is it people just
54:11not wanting to believe
54:12the allegations about him?
54:14Is it because they believe
54:16what he's accused of
54:17isn't that bad?
54:18Is it just because
54:19they've met him
54:20and think he's charming
54:22and fun and cool?
54:25Frankly, honestly,
54:26I don't get it.
54:29Three women,
54:30after they spoke to me
54:32for my article,
54:33asked me to retract
54:34their testimony
54:35because they were pursuing
54:36legal action against him.
54:38I'm not sure what came
54:40of the legal action.
54:41I know that there's been
54:42no kind of case
54:43in the public domain
54:44thus far.
54:47It's been a year
54:48since the airmail article
54:49was published
54:50and since then,
54:51Leto has been
54:52in two major movies.
54:56Most recently,
54:57he played Skeletor
54:58in Masters of the Universe.
55:0130 Seconds to Mars
55:02have announced
55:03that they're going on tour
55:05in 2027.
55:08So we have no idea
55:09what the impact
55:10of our investigation
55:11is going to be
55:12because, honestly,
55:13it seems Leto's career
55:14has been unaffected
55:16by previous allegations.
55:19Seeing him continue
55:20to do whatever
55:21he wants to do
55:22and get accolades for it
55:23is pretty infuriating
55:24because he's left
55:26a trail of emotional destruction
55:28for a lot of young women.
55:31It makes me lose faith
55:33because, like,
55:35why are you supporting
55:37a man like that?
55:38How can you support
55:40a man like that?
55:42So do you think
55:43he thought
55:44that he'd get away with it?
55:47Well, he has, right?
55:49He has gotten away with it.
55:51This was 25 years ago.
55:56Apparently, he's been doing it.
55:58Apparently, people know about it.
56:01So by all means,
56:02I think he has gotten away with it.
56:34He's covered with it.
