A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday (July 28), damaging a moat wall of the city's historic castle. The quake knocked out power to thousands of homes, disrupted travel and triggered warnings for aftershocks. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government was assessing casualties and damage. The government issued emergency earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, all on Japan's southern Kyushu island. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for a wave of 1 metre (3.28 feet) but later lifted it. Kumamoto was hit by a major earthquake 10 years earlier that killed 275 people and injured another 2,739. Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, lying along the "Ring of Fire", and accounts for about 20% of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or more.
