A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Japan, triggering tsunami warnings and forcing around 90,000 residents to evacuate. Locals described the shaking as intense, with some saying it reached level six on Japan’s seismic scale.
Tsunami alerts were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures, and waves up to 70 cm were reported at multiple ports. By early Tuesday, Japan’s Meteorological Agency downgraded and later lifted all warnings, though officials urged residents to remain vigilant for the possibility of another strong quake within a week.
This video shows reactions from evacuees, damage at ports, and emergency repair work across affected areas.
