A Flying Squirrel is a remarkable tree-dwelling mammal known for its incredible ability to glide through the air. Found in forests across North America, Europe, and Asia, flying squirrels are nocturnal animals that spend most of their lives high in the treetops.
They have a special membrane of skin, called the patagium, that stretches between their front and hind legs. By spreading this membrane, they can glide distances of up to 90 meters (300 feet), using their long, bushy tails to steer and maintain balance. Despite their name, flying squirrels do not truly fly—they glide gracefully from tree to tree.
Flying squirrels feed on nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, insects, bird eggs, and tree sap. Their agility, excellent night vision, and silent gliding make them one of the most fascinating mammals of the forest. 🌙🐿️🌲✨
