00:02Well, today and in the coming days, the Royal Commission is really going to be zeroing in
00:07on how organisations, particularly government agencies and other sectors, address the issue
00:14of anti-Semitism.
00:14Not only getting on top of a problem that already exists, but how they can proactively
00:19in the future look out for the warning signs of anti-Semitism.
00:24We'll look at how leaders and how the corporate structure of organisations are trained on
00:29this very issue, how to identify the issue of anti-Semitism.
00:33And particular sectors that will be of interest to the Royal Commission in the coming days
00:37will be government agencies, the public service, as well as the healthcare sector, the arts
00:43and creative sector, and also schools.
00:46We've heard in previous hearing blocks of the Royal Commission from Jewish Australians who
00:50have expressed experiences of quite traumatic anti-Semitic episodes and behaviour they've
00:58experienced from colleagues in those sectors.
01:02So we will be hearing from both experts in those sectors, but also from a few more Jewish
01:08people in those sectors as well.
01:10And who will be giving evidence today?
01:13Well, perhaps most notably, we'll be hearing from Rabbi Mendel Castell.
01:17Now, he is a major Jewish leader here in Sydney.
01:21He's the CEO of the Jewish House, which is a crisis centre in Sydney's east, but he's also
01:26a chaplain for Sydney hospitals, many Sydney hospitals, as well as for New South Wales police.
01:32And also he's the brother-in-law of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, one of the people who were killed
01:38in the Bondi terror attack.
01:40And he's been working in this space for a long time.
01:42He's been working, he's had roles in the National Mental Health Commission, as well
01:46as in other roles where social cohesion is of a real chief focus.
01:52So he'll be giving evidence about some of the strategies around how to tackle anti-Semitism
01:57and to boost social cohesion.
01:59We're also going to be hearing from some senior bureaucrats today, as well as a senior public
02:05servant, a Jewish woman who has held senior roles in the public service, who will give
02:10her experience of what it's been like being a Jewish person in the public service.
