00:00So I want to blend Commander's Nats together.
00:03Those are the two teams we've been talking the most about today.
00:05I think both are relevant in this discussion.
00:08So what C.J. Abrams and James Wood did yesterday was unbelievable.
00:12C.J. hits two bombs.
00:14James goes, oh, that's pretty cool.
00:16And then James Wood hits two home runs in his own right.
00:18They combine for four in the biggest game of the year.
00:21C.J. for the season is 27.
00:24James Wood for the season is 30.
00:26The only two players on the same team, the only duo, so to speak,
00:29with 27 or more in all of baseball.
00:31They also are the only two guys from the same team in the top five in OPS.
00:35We've got ourselves an all-time kind of D.C. sports tandem developing here
00:40if you can keep C.J. Abrams and James Wood together.
00:43Abrams, the best offensive player at shortstop at 25 years old,
00:48and James Wood, who's going to win an MVP award at some point,
00:50is only 23 years old doing what he's doing,
00:53and he's already the best right fielder in baseball at this point.
00:56But it got me to thinking about whether they are already the best tandem in D.C. sports.
01:02And we'll open up the phones on this for you guys at 800-636-1067.
01:07So in the current day right now,
01:09the other candidate might be the teaming up of Jaden Daniels and Terry McLaurin.
01:16Yep.
01:17Commanders, Representatives, 5-17 makes 22, or 5-plus-17 equals 6, at least,
01:24from the 2024 football season.
01:27But I think a Jaden-Terry tandem's really damn good.
01:30The Caps don't really have a duo.
01:33Logan Thompson's unbelievable, but two seasons ago, Charlie Lindgren was good, too.
01:37He didn't play well last year.
01:39So I don't think you'd go with a goalie tandem.
01:40Ovi and Willie, because they've been around the longest from the championship days together
01:45and sometimes spend minutes together on the top line.
01:50Possibly you could go Ovechkin-Wilson as a tandem.
01:52But is there another current-day D.C. sports Batman and Robin,
01:56like James Wood and C.J. Abrams,
01:59like Jaden Daniels, Terry McLaurin, that you can come up with?
02:02I mean, the one that we haven't seen yet,
02:04and people have been excited assuming he plays,
02:07Trey Young and Anthony Davis could be a pretty fun duo.
02:10Now, it's not like we have attachment to either one of those guys big time,
02:13but I think that could be fun, and you're hoping for the Wizards.
02:15It's like A.J. and Saar or A.J. and Trey Johnson or A.J. and one of those guys.
02:21That's kind of what you're hoping.
02:22That's a good one, actually.
02:23I was thinking DeBonsa and, you know, but yours is better
02:26because Davis is a Hall of Famer,
02:28and I know Trey Young has a lot of detractors,
02:31and, heck, I've been one of them at different points of his career,
02:33but he's a Hall of Fame talent.
02:35He does something that no one has ever done in the modern era
02:38in terms of points and assists and being an offensive energizer bunny.
02:42So, yeah, I think a point guard, big man, natural tandem as it is in basketball anyway,
02:47the inside-outside thing, you're playing like two-on-two.
02:50You want the shooter.
02:51You want the dude down low working in the block.
02:53So a Trey Young, Anthony Davis could be in that Mount Rushmore right now
02:57with McLaurin and Daniels with Abrams and Wood.
03:02I still think CJ and James is number one on any list you're coming up with.
03:06Yeah, I mean, it's tough because this is their first season playing at this level,
03:09not to say that they weren't good last season,
03:11but if you're going to do that, the 2024 season for Jaden and Terry
03:14was something special with, you know, Terry setting records for touchdowns
03:19and the things that he was able to do,
03:20and Jaden with one of the best, if not the best, rookie quarterback season of all time.
03:24Was 2024 Daniels McLaurin better than 2026 Wood Abrams?
03:30I don't think it was.
03:31Wood Abrams are two of the top five players in the sport right now, offensively.
03:36Yeah.
03:36I know neither of them are defensive stalwarts.
03:39Wood has gotten a lot better and is now probably average-ish,
03:42maybe even a little better with his size, taking balls off the top of the wall.
03:45Abrams is terrible defensively at shortstop for the most part,
03:48but, I mean, they're two of the five best guys in OPS right now in the sport.
03:53If you look at war, they're near the very top.
03:55Daniels had a historical, unbelievable season, played like an MVP,
03:58and McLaurin had an all-time receiver season, but he still wasn't a first-team All-Pro.
04:03Yeah, and maybe, you know, that does a little heavy lifting,
04:05knowing at the end they get to the NFC Championship game,
04:08versus we'll see where this national season goes.
04:11But, I mean, the whole point of this conversation is,
04:13that's how special James Wood and C.J. Abrams have been this season.
04:17So here's my next question.
04:18When is the last time we've seen a tandem this good in D.C. sports?
04:22If they are better than all the other current tandems,
04:24and if we're forgetting somebody, you could go off the beaten path a little bit.
04:28I mean, Trinity, Rodman, and who for the spirit, I don't really know.
04:31I know the Mystics have three All-Stars, and they're very young.
04:34You'll just have to forgive my ignorance, and I'm sorry.
04:36I just don't know what that looks like.
04:38I could tell you that at one point in time when they won a title in 19,
04:42E.D.D., Elena Deladon, and Emma Mieseman was like the tandem back then.
04:46And they were together on that team.
04:48I don't know even who it would be right now.
04:50But Ovechkin and Backstrom is the first one that comes to mind for me
04:54is probably the best all-time in D.C. sports because of longevity.
04:5820 years together, led the team to a Stanley Cup.
05:01Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
05:04Backstrom assisted on way more of his goals than anybody else.
05:07Backy's the all-time assist leader.
05:09Ovi basically owns every other record for the team.
05:12I think Art Monk, Gary Clark, the duo that made up the heart of the posse,
05:18three Super Bowl championship appearances together, two rings together.
05:23Monk's a Hall of Famer with the NFL catches record when he retired.
05:26Clark was one of the best deep threats in the era that he played in the 1980s.
05:30And the guy that you'd add to that is Ricky Sanders if we're going best trios.
05:34But I think Monk and Clark are kind of there.
05:37The best great Nats tandem before this, Scherzer and Strasburg.
05:41Well, Scherzer and Strasburg on the pitching side.
05:44And this is maybe a one-year thing.
05:45They didn't play together as long as we would have liked, obviously.
05:48But the 2019 season from Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto.
05:53Listen to these numbers.
05:54Both of them finished with an OPS just around 950.
05:57Juan Soto was 949.
05:59Anthony Rendon was above 1,000 at 1,010.
06:03That's crazy.
06:04And both of them finished with 34 bombs.
06:07Anthony Rendon had 126 RBIs.
06:09Juan Soto had 110.
06:11So they basically had a slightly worse season than these two guys are having now.
06:17Yeah, and that's assuming, again, you can't put it in the bank that they're going to keep doing this for
06:20another two months.
06:21No, no, but they're on pace to both hit 40 bolts.
06:23Those guys both were in the mid-30s.
06:25Now, the only thing about that, and I think that's a great answer, it works.
06:28But like these other guys, you think of Ovi and Backstrom, they're inextricably linked.
06:32Yep.
06:32You think of Monk and Clark, they are synonymous with one another.
06:35You can't mention one without the other.
06:37I think, when I think of Scherzer's prime, I think of Strasburg and that kind of one-two punch at
06:43the top of a rotation.
06:44Like, this one is actually maybe deeper down the list, but Wall and Beal.
06:48Yeah.
06:49When you think of John Wall, you think of Brad Beal and vice versa.
06:52It was crazy because there was a time, it wasn't a long time, and it wasn't something that obviously played
06:57out.
06:58But do you remember there were discussions about who was the better backcourt duo, Wall and Beal, or Steph and
07:02Clay?
07:03That aged really well, too, didn't it?
07:06Whoever the silly geese were that were having, like, it was probably Stephen A. Smith and some other guy on
07:11whatever the dumb show was.
07:12I think the Splash Bro's clear on that one, but, you know, they were in the conversation for a little
07:16while.
07:17They flirted with 50 wins they ever got there a handful of times, but they made the playoffs four years
07:21in a row, and that was the best run of Wizards basketball since they were the Bullets winning championships in
07:26the 70s.
07:27Yeah, in my lifetime, for sure.
07:29I would think, you know, is Daryl Green have a peer that, in the secondary, maybe, like, Stanley Richard came
07:38and went, Chris Dishman, I don't know.
07:40I mean, there was a time when it wasn't necessarily on these same levels, but Pierre Garçon and Deshaun Jackson
07:45was a fun duo at the receiver position.
07:48I mean, they both went over 1,000 yards together in the season, and you almost had Jameson Crowder follow
07:53right in their footsteps, so that was a fun tandem as well.
07:55C.J. Abrams has 27 homers and a 940 OPS.
07:59James Woods got 30 bolts and a 953 ops.
08:03They're two of the top five right now in Major League Baseball and OPS.
08:07Basically, offensive value, two of the five best offensive players in the sport.
08:12Best tandem in D.C. sports, would you take them over?
08:15Jaden Daniels and Terry McLaurin?
08:17That's question number one, 800-636-1067.
08:20Is there another current tandem that stands out?
08:23Toby's thinking Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and then when's the last time we've had one like this?
08:28I mean, all the time, I'm thinking O.V. Backstrom, maybe Art Monk, Gary Clark, Scherzer and Strasburg.
08:35If you're a D.C. United fan, when I was going to games way back in the day, Marco Echeverri
08:41and Jaime Moreno.
08:44MLS superstars together, three MLS Cups in four years in the D.C.
08:49City of Champions, you sleep?
08:51Yes.
08:51Yeah, I do sleep.
08:53You should, comfortably.
08:55800-636-1067.
08:57Grant and Danny on the phone.
