00:00New tonight, five teen D.C. basketball players and their coach have been arrested in Central Florida after an alleged

00:05theft while they were in town for a tournament.

00:07Talks off, Sydney Persing, live in the district tonight with surveillance video and what we know. Sydney.

00:13Yeah, well, the sheriff down in Pope County, Florida, obviously wanted to make an example of this case, and he

00:18did that by posting about it to more than a million and a half of his followers on social media,

00:23including video of this alleged crime.

00:25Here's a look at it now. We have blurred these teens' faces. We are not releasing their names or their

00:30mugshots, as the sheriff's office did, because they are minors.

00:32But according to the sheriff, they're from D.C. and Maryland, ages 16 and 17, and were caught stealing from

00:38a 7-Eleven in Central Florida yesterday just after 4 in the morning.

00:42Investigators say the kids are part of a travel basketball team, as you mentioned. We're in Florida for a tournament.

00:47The teens are accused of stealing food and drinks less than 40 bucks worth, Doritos, gummies, Starbursts, sausage, lemonade, and

00:54Slurpees.

00:55They fled, though, according to the sheriff, when the clerk confronted them.

00:58He said deputies then located three of the five involved teens and that they'd hidden the stolen food in a

01:03backpack in bushes.

01:05Their coach, 27-year-old Malik Harvey, is not accused of being involved in that theft, but in a video

01:10posted to social media,

01:11the sheriff said when deputies made contact with the coach, they asked him if he could identify the remaining two

01:16suspects in this video, but that he lied about knowing them.

01:21Of course, we had three in custody.

01:24We're going to get into, this is Sheriff Grady Judd, if I remember his name correctly.

01:30We're going to get into his response because this guy is absolutely hilarious.

01:39He is absolutely amazing.

01:41A no-nonsense type of guy, straight business.

01:49I'm sure some of you have probably seen Sheriff Judd several times because he's always doing pressures after a big

01:59arrest.

01:59It's hilarious.

02:02So we did reach out to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services for a statement about the coach's alleged employment,

02:07which you just heard the sheriff mention.

02:09We have not yet heard back.

02:10We also tried contacting Coach Harvey himself, but we're also not able to reach him.

02:14He faces a child neglect charge now, as the sheriff alleges that before that theft, he'd arranged an Uber for

02:20the teens to an Airbnb where there was no adult yet present.

02:23He also faces charges for resisting without violence, accessory after the fact, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

02:30The teen boys were each charged with conspiracy to commit retail theft, tampering with evidence petty theft, and violation of

02:37the county curfew ordinance for juveniles.

02:39So the sheriff went on to say in that video that, interestingly, there was another team coach who helped them

02:45identify the remaining two teens.

02:46He said that coach is actually one of the boys' mothers.

02:49He went on in that video to praise her for what he said was doing the right thing.

02:57The mom did the right thing, but the coach did it.

05:03They're part of a basketball team.

05:06They're from the Washington, D.C. area, primarily one of them, I think, maybe from Maryland.

05:14They were here in Central Florida for a basketball tournament.

05:18A pro final basketball tournament by Puma.

05:23It's called Next Pro Basketball Tournaments.

05:28So they fly in and they are at an Airbnb where their coach is located.

05:37So it's late in the evening and the coach arranges for them to get an Uber to go over to

05:43another Airbnb where they're staying.

05:45But there's no one there that's an adult yet because their flight ran late out of D.C., which is

05:55no surprise, by the way.

05:58So they were allowed to Uber over by the coach.

06:02They got to their Airbnb and they decided at 4 o'clock in the morning on Friday that they would

06:10walk down to the 7-Eleven, bum rush the 7-Eleven on Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Davenport and start stealing

06:18stuff.

06:19And that's just what they did.

06:22Of course, the sheriff's office was called.

06:25We responded and arrested three of the five.

06:30And then we tracked down the coach.

06:34I want to introduce you to him, the adult, Coach Malik Harvey.

06:38Coach Malik Harvey was shown pictures of all five of the thieves that were stealing.

06:50Of course, we had three in custody.

06:53He denied knowing who the other two were.

06:57He resisted us when he did not cooperate in the investigation, when he directly lied, when he misled us.

07:05Well, of course he knew who they were, but he lied to us.

07:10Oh, did I tell you that he works for the Department of Juvenile Services in Chiltenham Youth Detention Center in

07:20Maryland?

07:21That's right.

07:22So he works in the criminal justice system and he lied to us.

07:29So another coach, which I want to compliment this lady, Coach Hall, she identified the other two, one of them

07:38being her son, James.

07:42James' mama did exactly what was right.

07:45She cooperated.

07:47She was as mortified and upset as was appropriate.

07:57But not Coach Harvey.

08:00So we arrested Coach Harvey.

08:02You remember me saying, if you don't take care of them, we will, then we'll hold you accountable.

08:09Now he's charged with child neglect.

08:12He's charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

08:16He's charged with resisting without violence and accessory after the fact for trying to hide the identity and where two

08:29of those that stole were.

08:34This is very simple.

08:36I don't know what y'all do in Washington, D.C., but it must be crazy.

08:42But you're not going to come from all around the country and steal in this county without going to jail.

08:49Well, that's a promise from the sheriff.

08:56Promise made and a promise kept.

08:59You know, quite interesting stuff, huh?

09:01So all because he wanted to lie.

09:03Now, not only is he, might he go to jail, right?

09:08For a period of time, probably not a long time.

09:11But also, he might lose his job.

09:14So when you go back to D.C., your job is probably cooked.

09:23You know, just because a kid is involved in a bad situation doesn't mean it's a bad kid.

09:31Could have been around some bad individuals who influenced him to do something that he wouldn't typically do.

09:37And that could have very well been the case.

09:38Because as you heard there, the mother of one of the kids was mortified and upset, as she should be.

09:45And not only that, but she made sure that she identified the other two.

09:49Like, no, I know exactly who they are.

09:51This is such and such and such and such.

09:54So that might have been the case with that first kid who, you know, is her son.

09:58He just was influenced by them to do something that he typically wouldn't have done.

10:02And that's unfortunate.
