00:00So it was a big day for the junks yesterday.
00:02We returned to our roots.
00:03It was Sports Junkies Night, along with like three or four other promotions at George's
00:09County Stadium.
00:10I never got a margarita.
00:11What happened to the margaritas?
00:12I didn't see any of that.
00:13Yeah, I don't know.
00:14I missed that whole part.
00:15Although, in the suite, you had left to go to the bathroom.
00:19There was like a waitress that came by, and she's like, I can get you anything you want.
00:24Yeah.
00:24She's like, they sell six packs of beer.
00:27Okay.
00:27She's like, but you can mix and match.
00:29Okay.
00:29And we had just come from Jerry's.
00:31So Jason and I were in there.
00:33I think you were outside.
00:34You were on your phone.
00:35Well, I wanted to be outside because it was a little hotter.
00:37I don't like being in cold-ass air conditioning.
00:39Okay.
00:39Jason and I were inside.
00:40I love cold-ass air conditioning.
00:42And she came in, but we had just gotten back from Jerry's.
00:45I mean, it was like in the first five minutes that we were in that suite.
00:47Yeah.
00:48And Jason and I were like, no, we don't need anything.
00:50Do you know how full I am off a crab bomb?
00:52Again, thank you to Jerry's and Phil.
00:54I mean, the crab bombs are unbelievably filling.
00:58Sure.
00:59It's more than a meal.
01:00Yeah.
01:01But thank you to everybody who came out, first and foremost.
01:04I was stunned by the number of people that stopped by to say hello, to get a picture,
01:10sign JP's book.
01:12Yeah.
01:12They had a rack of pictures there that the Bay Sox had printed out that people were coming
01:16by and were signing for.
01:17And they literally had 900 pictures.
01:20Yeah.
01:20And they were so mad.
01:21I gave them the promotions.
01:22I said, use this for other gigs.
01:23Yeah, sure.
01:24Why not?
01:24I mean, we're not going to use them all.
01:25Right.
01:25But I mean, I was, I know that when JP posted the videos of like us throwing out the first
01:31pitch that there's nobody in the stands.
01:33I mean, that's right.
01:34You're, it's, you know.
01:35It's a Thursday night, double-A minor league game.
01:37Yeah.
01:37I think there may be where, when all told, maybe 800,000 people at the game.
01:41Yeah.
01:41You know, but when we were throwing out the first pitch, maybe there were a couple hundred
01:44people in the stands.
01:45Because people are still filtering in.
01:47Yeah, people are still filtering in.
01:47We're throwing out the first pitch at like 6.15.
01:49And the game doesn't start until 6.35.
01:51Right.
01:52Right.
01:52So it's 20 minutes before game time.
01:54You know, obviously it's, there's almost no one there.
01:57But by the time, after we threw out the first pitch or whatever, and then we, we come
02:01out and they, they take us behind the stands.
02:03They had a little table set up.
02:05I actually thought it was going to be like one of our old, like, sleep number appearances
02:09where we're like in a mall and no one comes by.
02:13I had the same fear.
02:14That's literally what I was like.
02:15I was like, guys, you don't understand.
02:16No one's going to come.
02:17I mean, literally no one's going to come.
02:18And so many nice people came by.
02:20It was very nice.
02:21There was a line of people there.
02:22Yep.
02:23It was, I really felt good about it.
02:25And you know, it was good to see some old friends.
02:28Horsey's parents came by.
02:29Yeah.
02:29John and Nancy were there.
02:30Hadn't seen them in a while.
02:32I mean, Coach Lonergan came out.
02:33Yeah, Mike Lonergan was there.
02:35Good to see him.
02:36And some, you know, long time listeners, some listeners that came out to Dewey.
02:40Our guy, Brian, came from Pennsylvania.
02:43Very nice of him to do that.
02:44People came from all over.
02:45I met, I met a couple that, I don't know where they live.
02:48I think they live just right there in Bowie now.
02:50The one girl, I think she said she grew up in Camp Springs.
02:54Okay.
02:54The other guy, maybe she went to Surrattsville High School.
02:57And I asked them how many kids they have.
03:00No kids.
03:00Six cats, though.
03:01Cakes.
03:02Six cats.
03:03That's a lot of cats.
03:04I think when you have six, you're definitely qualified as cat people.
03:07Yeah.
03:08You gotta be.
03:09That's too many.
03:10Yeah.
03:11That's...
03:11I think two or less normal.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Over two.
03:16Four or more?
03:16Like if you told me you had three.
03:18Yeah.
03:18I'd raise my eyebrows, but yeah, four or more.
03:21That's a lot.
03:22One of Lonergan's boys, I can't remember his name, he was in charge of the auxiliary field
03:29at FedEx Field.
03:30He's the reason why he came with Mike last night.
03:33He's the reason why we played at the auxiliary field at FedEx for our Divas game.
03:38Nice.
03:39And he's the one that called in when he heard we were going to have the game.
03:42He said, hey, come by here.
03:43I run this thing.
03:44We got a brand new field here.
03:45We should use it.
03:46He did it without basically any permission from the county or anything.
03:51He was worried he was going to get fired.
03:54And here's one thing, though, that was interesting.
03:56He takes pride in.
03:58And he ultimately, he got credit from Mark Curry and these other people in local politics
04:05or wherever that we gave them all that attention for that field.
04:09To this day, we hold the record attendance.
04:11Look at that.
04:12For any event they've had in the auxiliary field.
04:14Chuck's record holders.
04:15Nice.
04:15No event, though, like the Mathes St. John's game.
04:17Anything you can think of.
04:19None of them.
04:21They're all second to the Junkies Divas game.
04:24You know what we do?
04:24We put butts in seats.
04:25We put butts in seats.
04:26At least at the Turkey Bowl.
04:28That is true.
04:29At least at the Turkey Bowl.
04:30And we put some butts in the seats at Prince George's County Stadium last night.
04:34We put some.
04:34I mean, we're not going to claim it was a sellout, but what are you going to do?
04:37So the first pitch, I threw a nubby first pitch.
04:40Yeah.
04:40You hopped yours in.
04:41You also had said, you're like, this is a classic JP just kind of like not really preparing
04:47at all.
04:47He hadn't even tossed the ball one inch, like anywhere.
04:50Like, at least play catch for a second.
04:52I didn't have time because I was doing videos of you guys.
04:55I feel like my two pitches to drab in the hallway here earlier yesterday.
04:59That's all you needed.
05:00That's all I needed.
05:01It gave me like a boost of confidence.
05:04No, I actually.
05:05And that was good.
05:05I had to feel a baseball.
05:07I dragged my daughter out front.
05:09I said, go grab a glove.
05:10Let me throw you a couple of balls.
05:11I want to make sure, you know, because it feels like a golf ball in your hand, a little
05:14baseball, if you haven't thrown one in years.
05:16I don't even think that was a legit ball, right?
05:19I mean, it's like a souvenir ball.
05:20It was a little plasticky.
05:21I don't know.
05:21It was some sort of souvenir ball.
05:22Yeah, yeah.
05:22It was fine.
05:23I think the Baysox were awesome.
05:24I'm wearing my Baysox hat.
05:25I'm wearing mine as well.
05:26I haven't been a hat guy in a long time.
05:27For some reason, I like this Baysox hat.
05:29I like this hat, but I'm not generally a flat brim guy, and this one's hard to kind
05:33of bend the brim.
05:35It looks good on you.
05:36I'm just going to rock it.
05:37It looks good on you.
05:38What are you going to do?
05:38But Chesapeake Baysox.
05:40Right before JP throws his pitch, he goes, I haven't thrown a ball in years.
05:46Show.
05:47And then he went up there, and he did, I think, that classic mistake.
05:50You tried to kind of fire it in.
05:51Yeah.
05:52Remember.
05:52Yeah, it's fine.
05:53The pro move.
05:55I tried to do.
05:56I also did a little mini leg kick.
05:58Like, you guys just kind of grabbed it and threw it.
06:00Yeah.
06:01I did a little leg kick.
06:03So, we did the first pitch.
06:05But does that mean we get breakfast?
06:06Sure.
06:06We're not supposed to eat until 10, but I might make an exception.
06:09I'll buy breakfast.
06:11Then Cakes and I agreed to do their wacky bits.
06:15Yes.
06:16Jason was there.
06:17He wasn't going to do it.
06:18Eric didn't express any interest.
06:20No interest.
06:21And I will never do it anymore.
06:22And we knew it was coming, Cakes.
06:23I've been there, done it.
06:24Because Drab told us there were two possibilities.
06:26One was we were going to get in those big balls and slam into each other.
06:31And then there was some sort of bungee thing, which we didn't understand.
06:34That would have probably been the least embarrassing of all of the options.
06:37But they gave us the dizzy bat race.
06:40That's got to be a minor league staple.
06:41Oh, it has to be.
06:42Because we did that at Prince William County Stadium 20 years ago.
06:45Every minor league game that's ever happened has had that promotion.
06:49I don't think I did that in Frederick.
06:49I will tell you that when Eric and I did this thing years ago, we didn't spin as long as
06:55Cakes and I were spinning.
06:57Cakes and I were spinning.
06:58Well, I was spinning fast.
07:00Our guy, I believe his name was Evan, who was the emcee, who was doing the count up or count
07:06down.
07:07He's also a former Pointer Ridge Elementary alum.
07:09Very nice.
07:09So he started at 1 and went to 10.
07:12And his 1 through 7 was pretty quick.
07:16But 8, 9, and 10, he was taking a sweet time because he was trying to milk it.
07:20He wanted to keep going and get dizzier and dizzier.
07:23And this is what I misunderstood.
07:25EB, it's a race, right?
07:27And they told us, they said, okay, you're going to run from home plate to third base.
07:31There'll be a finish line.
07:32You have to do 10 spins.
07:34So I thought doing your 10 spins was part of the race.
07:38I was going super fast.
07:40I know our guy from Ref the Districts, he apparently broke down the film.
07:44He said, I did 11 1⁄2 spins, Cakes did 8.
07:47Yeah, I was pacing myself because I was like, first of all, I had crab soup in the tum-tum.
07:53And I had a third of a pretty hoppy beer already in the gullet.
07:57And I was like, if I go super fast, I'm not only going to lose the race, I'm going to
08:02vomit on the field.
08:03And that's going to be a horrible look.
08:05And we'll never get invited back.
08:06But so we do the spins, and maybe I did more spins in him.
08:10And then the guy goes, go.
08:12Yeah.
08:12And then I just pretty much peel off to the left.
08:16Cakes peels off to the right.
08:18I went off to the right because when you're doing that dizzy bat, when you drop the bat, you're disoriented.
08:23Of course.
08:24So I dropped the bat, and you're dizzy.
08:26And I was leaning towards the third baseline.
08:30What I didn't realize was they had the freaking tape stretched out.
08:35You ran right past it.
08:36I ran right past it.
08:37You would have beat him.
08:38And then to my left, I see the tape stretched out.
08:41Oh, I watched it.
08:42I didn't run to the tape.
08:43I ran to third base.
08:44Like a big stupid.
08:46And I missed it.
08:47I lost it.
08:47I can't believe you gave JP that victory.
08:49You had it.
08:50You were smoking him.
08:51I lost on a technicality.
08:53Well, not a technicality.
08:54You ran off course.
08:56Literally, didn't even see.
08:57Well, to be fair, I ran off course, too.
08:59And a guy threw me back in.
09:01But I think they said that Cakes probably got thrown back in.
09:04No, I got gently steered away from the white line because they didn't want you stepping on the white line.
09:09That was made clear to us.
09:11Cakes look like one of those little t-ball kids who runs to third base first after he gets ahead.
09:16He had no idea.
09:17Yeah, he had no idea what was going on.
09:19I'm telling you, literally, I didn't even see the tape until.
09:23It was too late.
09:24I also saw.
09:25All I saw was third base.
09:26Literally, it's all I saw.
09:28And the outfield.
09:29I didn't notice, but some people tweeted or hit us up on Instagram.
09:32All the videos are up.
09:33Facebook.com slash The Junks.
09:35If you go to Instagram, Sports Junkies Radio on Twitter, at Junks Radio.
09:40Some people alleged you ran palms up.
09:42I mean, maybe.
09:43Did you run palms up?
09:44I felt like I was running as fast as Usain Bolt while I was doing it.
09:48But then I saw the video, and I was moving like a glacier.
09:51But apparently, J.P. was moving slower because I was smoking him.
09:54I just didn't get to the finish line.
09:56Well, I think you got out of the bat.
09:58Like, you got off the bat faster.
10:00Yeah, my release was quicker.
10:01And then I actually saw the finish line.
10:04Yeah.
10:05So you were already ahead of me before I started running.
10:08And then I just, look, we both, we got dizzy.
10:11Yeah.
10:12All I know is that you had another event.
10:14And thank God, Drab knows that, like, Jason and I are just not doing that at this stage
10:17of my life.
10:18I'm just not going to do it.
10:19I don't care.
10:20They did this bit where you guys are hooked up to bungee cords.
10:24Yeah.
10:24And I sent the picture to Drab, and I said, thank God I'm not doing this.
10:28And we had hearts on, okay?
10:29And we're basically playing mano a mano tug of war, is what it was.
10:33And they're like, got to stay low.
10:35Low man wins.
10:35And I'm down there, and I'm low.
10:37And we're fighting each other.
10:37You guys are on all fours.
10:39Both of you.
10:39We're fighting inch for inch.
10:41You're bear crawling.
10:41You're bear crawling.
10:42And I was like, oh, I was like, my right knee is a little bit wonky.
10:46I don't put a lot of pressure on it.
10:47I was like, I'm going to blow my knee out doing this wackadoo promotion at the Bay Sox
10:52game.
10:53God, there'd be nothing greater than an ambulance coming onto the field for the minor league
10:56game because he blew out his ACL.
10:59For like 25 seconds, it was close to a stalemate.
11:01But then JP eventually wore me down.
11:03And then you just gave up.
11:05You just gave up.
11:06And then once I got yanked like 10 feet, all of a sudden, I was like, now it's just
11:10over.
11:10It's over.
11:11It's over.
11:11I'm not going to recover from this.
11:13So I had a terrible first pitch, but I did win a straw hat and a wiffle ball bat for
11:18two
11:18dubs over Cates.
11:19Got a lot of swag.
11:20You can check all that out.
11:22It's on, I don't know, social media, the junks, radio, et cetera.
11:26It was a fun night.
11:27Yeah.
11:27So thank you to the Chesapeake Bay Sox.
11:29You know what?
11:30They'll always be the Bowie Bay Sox to me.
11:32That's a lot of it.
11:33They're always the Bowie Bay Sox to me.
11:35What are the, the Congrejos last night?
11:37Yes.
11:38Congrejos Fantasmos, I believe.
11:40Ghost Craps.
11:41Ghost Craps.
11:42Yeah.
11:42Ghost Craps.
11:42Fun promotion.
11:43So it was a good time.
11:44Remember, later in the show, Grant Paulson's going to join us.
11:46We will get into the Nationals and what to expect coming up here at the trade deadline.
11:50Scott Abraham from ABC7 as the Rookies report today in Ashburn.
11:56Yes, training camp is underway.
