00:00Hi everybody, it's me, Tim, and today I'm doing a reaction to you.
00:07Top 20 McDonald's menu item fails.
00:11McDonald's don't fail, they do the best chicken nuggets in the world.
00:15So I'm gonna have a look and see what fails they do.
00:19Not all fast foods are created equal, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 failed McDonald's
00:25products.
00:26Number 20, McSalad Shakers.
00:27We commend McDonald's for trying to offer their customers more healthy menu options.
00:31A salad at McDonald's.
00:35Behave yourself.
00:36Diners were invited to pick one of three options, chef, Caesar, or garden salad.
00:41Add the dressing, and then in an admittedly fun bit of product packaging, cover and shake the domed cup in
00:46which the salads were served.
00:47Number 19, we've seen McDonald's make countless attempts at a premium burger.
00:51They're rarely long for this world, but the Arch Deluxe was an especially colossal flop.
00:55Introducing the burger with the grown-up taste.
00:58Burgers for grown-ups.
01:00What's the difference?
01:01It insinuates that all the other burgers people have been enjoying are for kids.
01:05I'm in the zone.
01:06All layered together in one symphony of taste.
01:09Today, it's remembered as one of the company's most expensive mishpires.
01:13America's favorite new burger.
01:14Number 18, McGrattin Croquette.
01:16The familiar frozen fish sticks most people ate as kids.
01:19The best-selling fish sandwich in America.
01:21Tell him your nickname, Henry.
01:23They call me Jaws.
01:24They call me Jaws.
01:26Consists of ground shrimp, mashed potatoes, and deep-fried macaroni.
01:30All mushed together into a patty.
01:32Number 17, Chopped Beefsteak Sandwich.
01:35Prepare to unveil the Chopped Beefsteak Sandwich.
01:38And for the most part, it was deemed delicious.
01:40Many fast foodies lucky enough to try it in the early 80s remember it as one of the greatest sandwiches
01:45to ever touch their palates.
01:46But the steep price made it too hard to swallow.
01:49I love that.
01:50Number 16, Fried Roast Beef Sandwich.
01:53In an effort to compete with Arby's, which was only a few years old at the time,
01:56McDonald's released a roast beef sandwich of their own.
01:59Announcing roast beef on a roll.
02:01And guess what?
02:02People loved it.
02:03Why is it that slow?
02:04So why was it a flop?
02:05Simple economics.
02:08The roast beef was freshly sliced.
02:10And the need to install and operate a meat slicer in every McDonald's proved too inefficient in terms of time,
02:16cost, and profitability.
02:17I could not do that advert with Uncle Barry.
02:21Number 15, Mighty Wings.
02:23So tell me what happened.
02:24We were playing for the Mighty Wings.
02:26More like Mighty Unpopular.
02:28I love chicken wings.
02:29There was nothing spectacularly bad about these wings.
02:32They were just unremarkable.
02:34One bite and you'll never give them up.
02:37New Mighty Wings from McDonald's.
02:39Chicken wings are just amazing.
02:41You can't go wrong with chicken wings.
02:43Number 14, Angus Burgers.
02:46I love that.
02:47Boasting a thick, juicy patty made of pure Angus beef.
02:50It's just a burger then.
02:51The sandwich came in one of four options.
02:54Mushroom and Swiss, bacon and cheese, chipotle barbecue bacon, and wait for it, the Angus Deluxe.
03:00In 2013, the burger was discontinued in the
03:02The Gallagher.
03:03Liam Gallagher, mate.
03:05The United States, though it generally continues to be offered in Canada.
03:09Want a Swiss?
03:10Of course you do.
03:11Number 13, McHot Dog.
03:13Don't hot dogs seem like a guaranteed success for any major fast food franchise?
03:18I'm not a big fan of hot dogs.
03:19Hot dogs are hot again, and they're new at McDonald's.
03:23But time and time again, they just fail to catch on.
03:27Imagine me being that kid doing that advert after watching our hot dogs made.
03:33Nope.
03:34There's even been an attempt to market a chili McHot Dog in Japan.
03:38Ugh, the horror.
03:42That's what I do, eat your dogs.
03:44Number 12, fajitas.
03:46I love fajitas as well.
03:47Fajitas were its big attempt.
03:49A new taste.
03:51Chicken fajitas.
03:53First rolled out in the 90s, McDonald's fajitas consisted of a soft-shell tortilla, grilled vegetables, and chicken.
03:59Most people seemingly found them palatable enough, just unremarkable.
04:02I love Mexican food, but coming to Taco Bell, oh my god.
04:07Number 11, Son of Mac.
04:09Son of Mac.
04:11Sometimes referred to as Baby Mac, this burger is a Big Mac without the second burger patty and middle bun.
04:16Why did I have to call it like the Son of Mac?
04:19Why did you say a little Big Mac?
04:21So, in short, it's pretty much a cheeseburger dressed as a Big Mac.
04:25The thing is, those who want it can already get it by ordering exactly what it is.
04:29A cheeseburger dressed as a Big Mac.
04:31It's one of the most popular off-menu customizations, but McDonald's various attempts over the years to make it official
04:37have just felt really half-hearted in terms of marketing.
04:39It's the taste of a Big Mac in a snack.
04:42Okay.
04:43Number 10, the McLean Deluxe.
04:44We're here because McLean Deluxe is 100% delicious.
04:48The Deluxe line aimed to corner the adult fast food market by presenting an entire line of sophisticated McDonald's products,
04:55including this supposedly healthy, low-fat burger.
04:58It achieved the lower fat content by using about 90% lean beef in its patties and adding water to
05:05replace the missing fat.
05:06It's 91% fat-free, but all people talk about.
05:09It's a big burger taste.
05:11But how would they bind it all together?
05:13Seaweed to the rescue.
05:14It's just salad.
05:16A seaweed extract is a common thickening or binding agent used in the processed food industry.
05:21This dry burger was deemed to be lacking flavor despite flavor additives, thus earned itself the nickname McFlopper.
05:29Number 9, McSpaghetti.
05:32McDonald's tried it in Italy and, unsurprisingly, it bombed.
05:36I'm gonna tell you right now, look at the state of that.
05:41Nothing sells quite like a country's most cherished and widely available dish.
05:44Look at it!
05:45It took too long to prepare, lacked flavor, and simply couldn't satisfy the cravings that drive people to McDonald's in
05:51the first place.
05:52If you got McDonald's, the last thing you want is scare.
05:54Number 8, Onion Nuggets.
05:56Onion Nugget!
05:58The product was essentially McDonald's attempt to make their own unique spin on onion rings, taking small chunks of onion
06:04and battering and deep frying them.
06:05Unfortunately, they were pulled from the menu and are now little more than a footnote in the history of Chicken
06:10McNuggets.
06:13You don't love a Chicken Nugget!
06:15Number 7, Fish McBites.
06:29Fish McBites were served with tartar sauce for dipping.
06:32Fishy fast food often has limited appeal.
06:34And so, the Fish McBites were deemed a failure and pulled from the menu the same year they debuted.
06:39No, it's hot!
06:40Number 6, McSoup.
06:41Available in select markets over the winter months.
06:43Where would you go to McDonald's and ask for soup?
06:45The McSoup came in two varieties, broccoli and cheese and classic chicken noodle.
06:50McDonald's didn't hire a crack team to develop their own instantly recognizable trademark versions of these two soups.
06:55They literally just licensed it from Campbell's.
06:58McDonald's was essentially trying to charge people to heat up soup they could get at the grocery store.
07:03McNo thanks.
07:04McNo thanks!
07:07You cheeky little so-and-sos!
07:10Number 5, Hula Burger.
07:12That's that Hawaiian burger joint.
07:13I hear they got some tasty burgers.
07:15This one was bad.
07:17That is a tasty burger!
07:20The Hula Burger was simply a bad sandwich.
07:23Turns out that the Filet-O-Fish was more desirable than a slice of grilled pineapple and cheese.
07:28The Hula Burger was pulled from restaurants shortly after its debut.
07:32Shouldn't have hot food.
07:33Number 4, McAfrica.
07:35This was a burger wrapped in pita bread, sold exclusively in Norway, and in honor of the Olympics.
07:41But consider the fact that Southern Africa was suffering from one of the worst food shortages in the history of
07:46the region in 2002.
07:48And you'll see that the bad taste wasn't necessarily in the burger itself, but in the choice of name and
07:53timing.
07:53Number 3, McStuffins.
07:55Logic seemed to be that McStuffins eliminated the oh-so-grueling effort of microwaving your hot pocket or other such
08:01savory turnover.
08:02Due to poor sales, the McStuffins were discontinued in 1993, the same year they debuted.
08:08Number 2, the McDLT.
08:10Uh, uh, what do you want, Michael?
08:11A McDLT?
08:12No, I already told you they don't make those anymore.
08:15You know, sometimes it's a regional thing.
08:17We could describe it to you, but we'd rather let Jason Alexander do the talking.
08:21The beach stays hot, the cool stays crisp.
08:24Put it together, you can't resist.
08:26Could be the best lettuce and tomato hamburger ever.
08:28The fact that they went through the trouble, and extra styrofoam, to build this dual-chamber hamburger containment system,
08:34just to keep the tomato and lettuce cool and crisp is commendable, but so unnecessary.
08:40Before we dig into our top pick, here are some honorable, or we guess dishonorable, mentions.
08:46McLobster.
08:46Still available seasonally, but only in select markets.
08:50It's the delicious McLobster.
08:52Get one before they're gone.
08:53I love lobster.
08:56Big and tasty.
08:57Designed to compete with Whopper, but failed.
09:00Introducing the next big thing from McDonald's.
09:03Super-sized items.
09:04An extra-large problem.
09:06They said to make it huge!
09:07It's super-sized!
09:08Now you can super-size your McDonald's extra-value meal.
09:11Spanish omelet breakfast bagel sandwich.
09:13It just didn't have that McDonald's breakfast taste.
09:16Eggs Benedict McMuffin.
09:17Because no one wants McDonald's-made Hollandaise sauce.
09:20Milk.
09:21Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel,
09:24and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
09:27Number one.
09:28Pizza and McPizza.
09:29Pocket-style McPizza.
09:31Which failed.
09:32But with their fresh-made oven-baked pizza,
09:35they were going all in.
09:37McDonald's pizza.
09:38La-la-la-la-la McDonald's pizza.
09:40The pizza was relatively well-received,
09:43but the wait time was not.
09:45You're sick to bear, guys.
09:48For a franchise that conquered on a campaign of speedy service,
09:51this was a deal-breaker.
09:53For the first time ever, he'll make dinner for his family.
09:56Pizza was a wrench in the well-greased gears of the McDonald's kitchen.
10:00By the end of the 90s,
10:01the McDonald's pizza dream was essentially dead.
10:05It's all dessert for me, Mom.
10:06I don't deserve it.
10:08Family-sized pepperoni pizza.
10:10It's a parent's dream come true.
10:12I love it, then.
10:14We just looked at the Twitter menu fails from McDonald's.
10:19And I've come to a conclusion.
10:21The reason why they all failed is to support advertising.
10:25Ooh, I've got a burger.
10:26Some of them I still have.
10:27Maybe not the pizza.
10:29Fish bites.
10:31What?
10:31Well, that's me doing the reaction video to McDonald's.
10:35Thank you so much for watching.
10:37I love you.
10:37Bye.
10:38Bye.
