00:00I grew up getting my hair relaxed about age six, I believe, until I moved out after college.
00:07I decided then that I wanted to transition and not do relaxing.
00:11Through that transition, that was when I started to do my own style.
00:14Hi, my name is Michelle.
00:15Today I'll be getting faux locs, but before you watch my transformation, subscribe below.
00:20So I moved to New York about 10 months ago, and one of the things I was really excited
00:25about was being able to explore my hair more and finding stylists.
00:31I moved here from San Francisco, where there was not as much of a culture around hair.
00:36And maybe two years into that, I big chopped and also started to wear my curls.
00:41And since then, it's been about four years.
00:44I have wanted faux locs for a long time, and I typically do my own protective styles, but
00:51faux locs is something that I have not been able to do myself, so I'm really excited to
00:56get them done.
01:06Hi, how are you?
01:07I'm Connie.
01:08I'll be your hair stylist today.
01:09Hi, Connie.
01:10I'm Michelle.
01:10Nice to meet you.
01:11Nice to meet you.
01:12I'm here.
01:12We're doing some gorgeous hip length faux locs today.
01:15Yes.
01:15I'm very excited.
01:16Oh my.
01:17Great.
01:18Let's get started.
01:19I'm just going to give you a very quick, gentle blow-dry.
01:25A couple of weeks after I got my hair done, quarantine started.
01:29And so I was pretty bummed out, and there was really no clear end in sight.
01:34So this is a really exciting time for me.
01:36I think it's awesome that I now get to have my hair done here in my home.
01:40I know there were stylists that had started doing that as things started to lift.
01:44And so I'm super excited to have that opportunity again, because for me, that's a part of the
01:50New York culture that I was looking forward to before things started to change with COVID.
01:55Okay, so you're all blown out.
01:57Next, we're going to subsection your hair in really small squares and braid your hair down.
02:02Sounds good.
02:04And then we're going to get the ball in really small areas.
02:05Whether you're doing corn rolls or box braids, if you're starting the braid with your actual
02:10hair, you are creating a tension-free start.
02:16Naturals are starting to realize when styles are tension-free, they often can look a little
02:21bit messier.
02:21And because of that, you have to embrace that bit of a messy look, which is why I think
02:26styles like we're doing today, the faux locs and the boho locs and the passion twists have
02:31become more popular because they are a style that's messy starting off.
02:35So they only look better as they get older.
02:40I absolutely love my hair now.
02:42Yeah, I really, really do and I try to take great care of it because I feel like my curls
02:46are a part of my identity that I didn't have when I was growing up.
02:49My grandma actually got sick when I was about six and that was a period of time when she
02:55actually wanted my mom to get me a relaxer.
02:58And then from then on, it just became standard.
03:01It was easy and it was comfortable for me.
03:04Braids also, I think at that point, I just no longer felt it had been a choice of mine.
03:10But then once I got older, I did want to go back to getting braids.
03:15From there, that was when I started to do my own hair as well.
03:18YouTube really helped me there.
03:19I think the natural community was starting to come up and I learned a lot.
03:29You're all sectioned off and braided down.
03:32Now it's time to loop in the crochet.
03:35I'm so excited.
03:37I feel like Lilioti.
03:39It's the parting for me.
03:43We're going to loop the crochets through your actual braids and double extend them.
03:48How long do you think it'll take?
03:50Maybe between six to eight hours.
03:53I typically protective style maybe once every three months.
03:56When I was first learning, it was more about learning as many different ways as possible.
04:02The first time I did my twists, it was the same day Stranger Things came out the first
04:07season.
04:08And the reason I know this is because I watched the whole season while I was doing my hair.
04:13It was eight hours of the show.
04:15I ended up watching something else.
04:16I think it took me 12 hours.
04:23So all of your crochet are individually attached.
04:26I extended the length by doubling the crochet right at the end for a little bit of a hip-length
04:32look.
04:32Now we're all set to add in your extension for some texture.
04:35Let's do it.
04:40I absolutely love protective styles because it actually takes the load off of me for
04:46not having to do my hair for a while.
04:48There's so many ways that we're now seeing people put a spin on what faux locs are.
04:53You know, bohemian and like just you can curl them and do all kinds of things.
04:57And I really appreciate the switch up.
04:59I feel like similar to how braids are now, you know, there's just so many different ways
05:05that people are wearing their braids in so many different styles.
05:07I really feel like it gives you more expression.
05:10And I love that you can do that with temporary faux locs.
05:20Okay, so you're on your last loc and you truly look like a goddess.
05:26Oh, thank you.
05:27Do you have an alter ego?
05:28Yes, I've decided that I am Venus, the goddess Venus.
05:32So I'm ready to see and debut.
05:37I can already feel it.
05:38Let's do it.
05:40Wow.
05:41Okay, I already feel.
05:42Hello.
05:44Oh my God.
05:45Wow.
06:05They are unbelievable.
06:09Look at how long they are.
06:10And I am tall.
06:12So this is like, ooh, I feel like a goddess.
06:17I am Venus.
06:18Connie, thank you.
06:20You have changed my life.
06:28One of the things I think I was worried about is all of the length that they might be very
06:34heavy, but they're actually so lightweight.
06:36There's no tension.
06:38There's no tension.
06:39It feels really, really comfortable.
06:40And I just feel really good about how long they are and how it's going to feel over the course
06:46of having this.
06:47This is so nice.
06:48It's even better than some of the past protective styles I've had in the past that were a lot heavier.
06:55And I'm just so happy.
06:56Thank you, Connie.
06:59Thanks for watching my transformation.
