00:01We've heard from a number of senior members of the government today, including the Deputy
00:07Prime Minister and Trade Minister, both saying, as you've mentioned there, that these tariffs
00:12are really disappointing.
00:14And what I'm hearing from the government, who are all here in Adelaide as Labor's national
00:18conference is taking place, is they're prepared to fight these tariffs.
00:23They don't think that they are fair, that they should be applied to Australia.
00:27They reject, resoundingly, the idea that Australia isn't dealing with the issue of modern slavery,
00:34of forced labour in its supply chains.
00:37And they note that Australia has a free trade agreement with the US, and that the real tariff
00:43rate on Australia should be zero.
00:45This is a little of what Don Farrell, the Trade Minister, had to say earlier today.
00:49Look, can I say how disappointed we are in the decision of the United States Trade Representative
01:00to increase tariffs on some Australian products going into the United States.
01:08We do not believe it was justified.
01:11We believe that amongst all of the countries in the world, Australia does take the issue
01:19of modern slavery seriously, and will continue to do that.
01:25But we think, and we believe, the Albanese government believes that this imposition of higher tariffs
01:31on Australia is completely unjustified.
01:35And we will continue to lobby the United States Trade Representative to remove all tariffs on Australian goods.
01:47So Clare, the delegates there have voted on a number of changes to the party's draft platform.
01:53What did they agree on?
01:56Yeah, so we had another day of a lot of these issues being negotiated on the sidelines of
02:02the conference here in Adelaide, so that when they got to the floor, they were passed without
02:07dissent.
02:07One of those was a push to strengthen the government's response to gambling reforms.
02:13Now, the government already has proposed a range of changes restricting gambling, advertising,
02:18particularly to protect children.
02:20But some additions to the platform made today, which is seen as a guiding document,
02:25if you will, for the government, include a push to look at inducements.
02:29That's things like bonus bets and other measures that are used to encourage people to continue
02:34or come back to gambling.
02:35And also a push revealed earlier by the ABC this week to toughen national regulation.
02:41One of the issues that actually did have some dissent was debated on both sides before
02:46it was ultimately adopted into the platform, though, was a push to have a conscience vote
02:51within Labor on the issue of voluntary assisted dying being accessible through telehealth.
02:58There were delegates that spoke for and against that particular proposal, but ultimately it
03:04did carry on the floor on the voices alone.
03:07We did hear from the Attorney General Michelle Rowland saying that she was cautious to weigh
03:12in either way on this and would be wanting to look at the issue a bit closer.

03:17The conference continues tomorrow then.
03:20Are there any more major debates scheduled?
03:24Yeah, so the main focus heading into the third and final day of this conference is going
03:29to be around some of the international relations issues, specifically where the platform stands
03:35on Israel and Palestine.
03:37There are talks still ongoing about the wording of the draft platform, which already has expanded
03:44as we know it in terms of what is in there.
03:47There are a number of things around condemning the Israel settlements in Palestine and as
03:55well looking at some of the rules and laws that have been passed by the Israeli government
03:59as they affect Palestinians.
04:01There is condemnation of terrorism where Hamas is specifically mentioned, but there has been
04:06criticism earlier in the week from the likes of the Israeli Embassy itself saying that
04:11they are unhappy with that draft.
04:13Now, whether there are changes in the language in the next few hours remains to be seen, but
04:18even if there are further changes, we're not expecting there to be all-out debate on the
04:24floor of that conference again.
04:26Very similarly for AUKUS, which would also have been a big point of debate if that had ended
04:32up on the floor.
04:33We're not expecting any major debates there, unlike the conference three years ago where it
04:38really was the centrepiece of conflict within the party.
04:42So, a range of controversial issues being discussed, but no major blow-outs expected on that final
04:48day of the conference where Labor delegates will ultimately end up endorsing the draft platform
04:54and that will become a guiding document for the Federal Labor Party for the next three years.
