00:00So, back when we started our cable access show in 1995 on Bowie Cable Television, there
00:08was a little period of time where Cakes, we kind of doled out responsibilities, and Cakes'
00:14responsibility was to contact teams in sports and ask them for jerseys, essentially, to dress
00:22up our set.
00:23Yeah, any sort of gear that they'd be willing to send us.
00:26The Trailblazers sent us ties, if you remember.
00:28We got ties from the Trailblazers, but we also randomly got a warm-up jacket, I believe,
00:33from the Sacramento Kings.
00:34No, no.
00:35The warm-up jacket, it was a shooting shirt from, I believe, the Lakers, and it was Cedric
00:41Sabalos.
00:41No, I remember that one, but I remember the Kings sent us something, too.
00:44They might have sent something that I'm forgetting about.
00:45I think the Kings sent us a warm-up jacket, but we would get these certain things.
00:48The reason why I'm bringing that up is a warm-up jacket worn by Wilt Chamberlain was discovered,
00:57found in Portland, Oregon, at a Goodwill store, sold for $89,600.
01:03Well, he bought it for $3 and, I believe, $0.07.
01:07Yes, he raided a bargain bin, looking for a jacket.
01:09He'd seen someone toss in a bin, and he bought it, and he sold it for $89,600 originally.
01:19Happy for him.
01:19It's an amazing find.
01:21I don't know how those thrifters do it, because I've been into a few thrift stores, like with
01:26my daughter, and it's 99.9% just trash.
01:33Stuff you would never, ever buy.
01:35You're leafing through it.
01:36You're like, it makes TJ Maxx or Marshalls look like a Nordstrom.
01:41Oh, yeah.
01:41And I'm not talking about Nordstrom, like a Nordstrom.
01:44No, I've been in one.
01:45It's borderline impossible to find anything that you would buy, let alone something of
01:50value that's going to sell for $100,000 at an auction.
01:54Maybe the greatest thrift store find of all time.
01:57Quinn Brown, 19 years old, has resold thousands of items online over the years, most for less
02:02than $20.
02:03But earlier this year, going through the bins at a Goodwill near Portland, Oregon, he noticed
02:08this.
02:09Somehow or another, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain's Lakers warm-up jacket from the 72 NBA Finals
02:15had ended up for sale in Oregon for $3.07.
02:20Here's Brown.
02:22The really key moment for me was I was in my room, and I looked at the measurements of the
02:28jacket.
02:28Wilt Chamberlain being 7'1", the jacket measured 33 inches long.
02:32So it would have gone down almost to my knees.
02:34I looked at it, and it matched up.
02:36Smart kid.
02:37When Brown posted his discovery online, Sotheby's reached out, helped with the forensic investigation
02:43matching the stitches on the jacket to old pictures of it, and then put it up for auction.
02:48And that $3 thrift store fine just sold for nearly $90,000, putting the jacket into the
02:56pantheon of bargain fines, including a Declaration of Independence copy found at a flea market.
03:02And this 1,000-year-old Chinese bull sold at a garage sale, both worth millions, by the
03:07way.
03:07As for Brown, he says he plans to put most of his windfall into savings, but also celebrate
03:13by taking what he calls a cheap vacation to Vietnam.
03:16Can you imagine finding the Declaration of Independence at a flea market?
03:22Yeah, crazy.
03:23I mean, you would have to think it's like, it's just a dumb copy, right?
03:27Like somebody made a copy, and it lands at a flea market.
03:29How does his jacket, his warm-up jacket, just get into a thrift shop?
03:33I don't understand.
03:34Somebody probably had it along the way, passed away or something, and somebody picks it up.
03:39In the 70s, the NBA was a year as popular.
03:44Maybe it went to a relative, maybe it was like in an estate sale, and somebody just got
03:49their hands on it, and then just gave it away.
03:51Yeah, in a box of clothes, donated.
03:52Didn't realize the value of it.
03:53The person that gets it at the thrift store doesn't realize what they have.
03:58They have no idea.
03:58They said, wow, this thing's like a 6X.
04:01No one's going to buy this.
04:02Plus, I mean, they have to be getting so much merchandise, like it's coming in in like
04:07trucks and bins, like they're not going piece by piece through whatever's coming into the
04:12store, right?
04:13I don't know.
04:14I mean, a lot of those guys, you ever drop off your stuff, they don't know what's going
04:17on.
04:17No, of course.
04:18You drop it off curbside, you get your tax receipt that you never, ever keep, and then
04:23you overestimate how many bags you gave away at the end of the year.
04:29That's got to be a rough life for that kid, though.
04:31I mean, he's going from thrift store to thrift store.
04:34I mean, he's on his ground buying stuff for $1, $2, $3, and then selling it for $20.
04:40I mean, that's, I guess if you do enough volume, you can make good money at it.
04:44It's a good profit margin.
04:45His greatest score before was $250.
04:47He sold some sort of item for $250.
04:50I think a lot, we've talked about this before, a lot of our wives and daughters, they like,
04:55thrifting is like a cool thing, not necessarily for resale, but they, you know, they like to
04:59find an old jacket or an old shirt or some jeans or something.
05:03I actually do follow guys.
05:05It's funny.
05:06You're not surprised.
05:07They find old golf clubs or they'll find like a Scotty Cameron, you know, that they can resell
05:13in a Goodwill or a Play It Against Sports or, you know, one of those kind of assignment
05:18I've never found anything good.
05:20Whenever I've gone, the few times that I've done it, it's like...
05:23It's mostly just junk for me.
05:24It's like a golf polo from a golf tournament from 14 years ago that you've never heard
05:29of.
05:30Or like a Northwestern University track jacket.
05:34Like, it's just like stuff you would look at and be like, I would never buy this.
05:38You know who, Drab, who claims to be the fashionista of the show?
05:43Who does?
05:43Drab claims to be?
05:44Trendy, you know, always on the cut.
05:46Really?
05:46He had no idea that he considered himself a fashionista?
05:48Oh, he, yes.
05:49Oh, yeah.
05:50It's a low bar here.
05:52It's all he talks about is he knows all the trends.
05:55He's a fashion snob.
05:56What the kids are wearing, what's in, what's out.
05:58That's true.
05:59Give us one emerging trend that we should know about.
06:02Not necessarily that we should adopt, but like give us a trend that you're noticing
06:07or...
06:07I don't know about that, but you guys like didn't even realize that kids have been
06:10wearing loose fitted jeans.
06:12You guys talked about it.
06:14Big ol' ass if slim pants were still in.
06:16Okay.
06:17Like skinny jeans.
06:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:18I don't know if...
06:19I mean, I don't...
06:20I mean...
06:20I have baggy jeans that I've been wearing for the last couple years.
06:23I don't know if that's true.
06:24I mean, maybe I would say...
06:25It's a different cut.
06:26It's a different type of cut.
06:27What cut?
06:27For what age is that?
06:30Gen alpha or whatever.
06:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:33But this fashionista is buying thrift store clothes now.
06:36Oh, no.
06:37I did find a gem of a place.
06:39Like, look, I don't care how nubs I am and I'm nubs.
06:42I'm not buying my clothes from Goodwill.
06:44Right.
06:44Okay?
06:45Like, I'll find a different way.
06:46Just because I...
06:47Like, those clothes are dirty.
06:48Yeah.
06:49I can't wear dirty clothes.
06:50They don't wash them at Goodwill?
06:52I don't know.
06:53They wash them, but the perception is that these t-shirts or jeans have been through the ringer.
07:00A lot of people...
07:01I've been on...
07:01I'm on hard times.
07:02All right?
07:03The store...
07:03The Goodwill store just tilts me.
07:05The lighting tilts me.
07:06Yeah.
07:06The set up the racks.
07:07Everything like that.
07:08It's a dirty dump.
07:09It's a dirty dump.
07:09Okay.
07:10In my opinion.
07:10But I have been buying my clothes recently from...
07:14It's a place called Play-Doh's.
07:16Okay.
07:17Play-Doh's Closet.
07:18There's a few of them.
07:18There's a chain, yeah.
07:19Yeah, yeah.
07:20This place...
07:20It's silly.
07:21It blew my mind.
07:22You go in there for, like, the women?
07:23Okay.
07:24It's all, like, Lululemon and Halo.
07:25They've got all kinds of stuff, yeah.
07:27And all the gym gear.
07:28Are they good prices?
07:29Like, there's nothing nubs.
07:30Are they good prices?
07:31No, it's more expensive than Goodwill.
07:33Mm-hmm.
07:33Yeah.
07:33But I'll go in there and you'll find any, like, high-end name brand stuff.
07:38I went to one out in Ashburn.
07:41It was filled with Commanders and Redskins Nike gear.
07:44Nice.
07:45Right?
07:45Or whatever.
07:46It's, like, never been worn.
07:47A lot of tags still on it.
07:48That's because Rocky McIntosh is donating it.
07:51Yeah.
07:52There's a place...
07:53You can find gems.
07:54You can find...
07:54There's a place...
07:55Matt, there's a place in Leesburg called Muzzin Rose that's kind of similar to that.
07:58My wife and daughters go there all the time.
08:01Yeah.
08:01They get great stuff for great prices.
08:04I'm no longer above used clothing.
08:06We had always Jonah and Valdez for buying dead guy stuff on eBay.
08:10I'm not above it anymore, but I'm not going to Goodwill.
08:13That's where I draw the line.
08:15Or Salvation Army.
08:16Uh-huh.
08:17Plato...
08:18I'm looking at the description of it.
08:19Plato's Closet is a teen and 20-something retail store.
08:25No wonder he's hanging out there.
08:27With over 500 locations in North America.
08:30It's not...
08:31That's not true.
08:32I mean, I'm reading...
08:33It's from their website.
08:35Well, maybe that's why I like it.
08:37A young guy at our...
08:38It makes you look up here younger.
08:40Which is nothing wrong with that.
08:41Do they have shoes in there, too?
08:43Uh-huh.
08:44But they're not taking...
08:45They will reject you.
08:46Like, if you go in there and they'll send you home with all your stuff.
08:49Oh, you mean that'd be crap.
08:50They're not taking your garbage.
08:50They'll turn you away.
08:51They have actual standards.
08:53Okay.
08:54Wow.
08:54Look, they found their niche.
08:56Do you think that we tossed aside anything of value from those BCTV days?
09:03No way.
09:03Was the Cedric Sabalos jersey the best?
09:06I still have that.
09:07I mean, it's probably...
09:08I mean, it's probably the best piece that we got.
09:09But, I mean...
09:1030 bucks to a Cedric Sabalos fan.
09:12It can't be worth anything.
09:13I can't imagine.
09:14Guy won a dunk contest, didn't he?
09:16I mean, it has no value.
09:17With the blindfold move.
09:18I mean, it has zero value.
09:18Maybe there's somebody in his family that would like it or something.
09:22It's actually kind of...
09:23Didn't the Rockets send us something with a player's name on it?
09:26I thought the Rockets sent us something, too.
09:28I don't remember.
09:29But, yeah, we had all kinds of stuff.
09:31I mean, some teams would send, like, signed pennants or shooting shirts.
09:36Yeah.
09:36You know, like, a lot of teams sent form letters that said,
09:39thanks for the interest, but we can't give you Jack Ola.
09:42Yeah.
09:43And, I mean, that was the majority of teams wouldn't give you anything.
09:46I like the hustle.
09:47I like the idea of going into stores and finding something, you know,
09:51or, like, going to a flea market and finding a Honus Wagner.
09:55I mean, right?
09:56I mean, just one of the odds.
09:57That's the dream.
09:58You're going to find a Picasso.
09:59You're going to find the one at Flea Market.
10:01You're going to find a Picasso.
10:02That has a Van Gogh original.
10:03You never know.
10:04I read those stories every year.
10:05You read a couple stories.
10:06All right, spitballing.
10:07I know.
10:08Should we have a junkies contest?
10:10Best thrift item that we can find?
10:12Under $5.
10:14So we have a $5 budget.
10:15I think it's funny.
10:16Sure.
10:16It's a funny bit.
10:17And then, I don't know who the judge is.
10:19It could be the boys behind the glass.
10:21Three judge panel.
10:23I think you have to raise the price.
10:25Let's say $10.
10:27$10.
10:28How about $20?
10:28$20 and under.
10:29Now, I mean, you could buy something good at a thrift store for $20, I would think.
10:34I mean, I'm willing to do it, but I'm not going to go to a thrift store.
10:36Yeah.
10:37I'm going to go to one thrift store.
10:38For $5 stuff.
10:41I mean, that's just garbage.
10:42$20, I think, is a good bar.
10:44Yeah.
10:44Paldez, Drab, you in?
10:45You judging?
10:47We'll judge.
10:48Yeah, sure.
10:48Absolutely.
10:49It's what we do best.
10:49So do we...
10:51Does it have to be a clothing item?
10:53Like, some of you guys are talking about picking...
10:55Yeah, what are the parameters?
10:56...like clothes for yourself?
10:57I would say it could be anything.
10:58Okay, anything.
10:59A bicycle.
11:00I mean, you know, whatever you find.
11:01You find something silly.
11:02You find a bike for $20, you're going to wheel that bitch in here.
11:04Now, I don't know how you're going to determine the value.
11:07Maybe you might have to...
11:08It's just that they each have a vote.
11:11If you came in here with a mongoose for $20, call up Chumley from Pawn Stars.
11:15Or what's the lead guy from Pawn Stars?
11:18Yeah, it might be Chumley.
11:20I don't even know.
11:21Chumley.
11:22Rick?
11:22Yeah, call up Rick from Pawn Stars.
11:24He'll definitely try to undersell you, though.
11:27He's going to try to...
11:29Oh, that Will Chamberlain?
11:30It's a little big.
11:31I'll give you $100 for it.
11:33Right, and then he sells it for $90,000.
11:35Man, that kid just got hooked.
11:38It's a find of a lifetime.
11:40Yeah.
11:41He's never going to find...
11:42But the problem is, he's never going to find anything like that ever again.
11:44No, no, no, no, no.
11:45But it made it worth his while.
11:46He's peaked at 19.
11:47Yeah.
11:48In his thrifted career, at least.
11:51Funny.
11:53I got to find a good thrift store.
11:54The one I went to last time was Super Nubs.
11:57I just can't go back to that one.
11:59Yeah.
11:59I don't know.
12:01I don't know what I would find, where you could find your most value.
12:03Are there any thrift stores like in Bethesda?
12:05I'm guessing not.
12:06There might be.
12:07Probably.
12:08I mean, I know that a couple of...
12:08Yeah, but there's Goodwills all over the place.
12:10Yeah, but that's the most garbage there.
12:12I think that's probably...
12:13That's a long ago.
12:13It's got to be a little bit more of a higher-end, you know, mom-and-pop type of place.
12:18Yeah.
12:19When my wife goes to the Goodwill in Ashburn, the one she goes to all the time, she drops
12:23the stuff off.
12:23I mean, there's stuff everywhere on the street.
12:25Yeah.
12:26Or in the parking lot.
12:27Yeah.
12:27There's this big trailer, and the guy says, just drop it right there.
12:30Right.
12:31I mean, I don't even know how they get to it.
12:33I mean, there's so much stuff.
12:35So much stuff to process.
12:36Yeah.
12:37But that'd be nice to hook up a Chamberlain for 90K.
12:42I'm going to find the original Edvard Munch, scream, painting.
12:47I'm not going to find that.
12:48The thing is, you go through paintings, you literally could go through the most popular,
12:53most famous paintings, and you wouldn't know it.
12:55How would I know?
12:55How would I know if I stumbled upon a Banksy original?
12:58How am I going to know?
13:00You wouldn't.
13:00I wouldn't know.
13:01Yeah.
13:02Yeah.
13:03You at least took an art class in college.
13:05You should have some knowledge.
13:07The name of the class was Art in the Dark, because once they turned the lights off, everybody
13:11who was hungover fell asleep in class.
13:13You think I learned anything?
13:15You think I learned one thing in that class?
13:17I think Kingston knows what Baroque means.
13:20No, I've heard the term before, but I couldn't tell you anything about it.
13:24I don't know what an impressionist is.
13:26Enlighten us, Valdez.
13:29Well, it's just like a Renaissance art design.
13:34Like a Gothic art design.
13:36I mean, he knows more than I.
13:38It's more than I could say.
13:39Sounds good.
13:40A period of paintings and architecture.
13:44What keeps me up at night is thinking about the things that I threw away, like JP mentioned,
13:49over the years that you didn't have no idea that was value.
13:52Sure.
13:53Like, there was that story that came out a couple years ago, a Tiger Woods card that was
13:57in Sports Illustrated for Kids.
13:59Okay.
14:00Sold for like, I don't know, tens of thousands of dollars.
14:03It's a very valuable card.
14:04It just came in a magazine?
14:06Like Sports Illustrated for Kids used to have tear-out cards in the front.
14:10You would literally cut it out of the magazine?
14:12It was like, tear-away cards.
14:14Yeah, those.
14:14And I had Sports Illustrated for Kids for years.
14:16Sure.
14:16You probably had it.
14:17I probably had that card in my possession at some point.
14:19What if you found out one of those cards that Sebastian Salazar gave us?
14:24Maybe he gave you a Rodri.
14:26Okay.
14:27How much is it worth?
14:29I don't know, but what if you found out it was worth something?
14:32Because you didn't even, none of us really, we looked at it, we said, thank you.
14:35I'd be regretful.
14:36And then they ended up, I think, on a table out there.
14:39They're going forever.
14:40It's in a dumpster or a landfill somewhere.
14:43Right.
14:43Like, how am I going to be able to track that down?
14:45I can't.
14:46I would just have to live with the fact that I threw away probably thousands or tens of
14:50thousands of dollars.
14:52When we were growing up, did you get, did we get cards for when we bought Ho-Ho's?
14:57Yes, they definitely had, like, limited edition baseball cards.
14:59I've never seen those blow up into anything.
15:02The one that kills this product would have, like, limited edition trading cards, like baseball
15:07cards, the one that kills me is my son's, like, thousands and thousands of Pokemon cards.
15:13I just have no idea if he had a good one or not.
15:16And they, you know, he just treated them like trash.
15:18Yeah.
15:18I mean, he had thousands of them.
15:20Like, I bought a bunch of Pokemon cards back in the day when my kids were actually young,
15:24but they, it's not like they're going to keep them in their wrapper.
15:27They're going to take them out.
15:28They're going to use them as drink coasters.
15:30They're going to fling them across the room.
15:32They're not going to treat them, you know, like, and keep them in mint condition.
15:35I mean, I just.
15:36So even if I had them still, like, they're not going to be worth it.
15:38I never would have guessed in a billion years, because I can remember it at the time when
15:41he, when he would waste money on Pokemon cards.
15:44What a waste this is.
15:45And I would never would have guessed they would have had a cent of value.
15:48So I'm supposed to take.
15:48Not even two cents of value.
15:50I'm supposed to take the Charmander out and put it between plastic and put a big chain
15:53around it and wear it around my neck like the guy from Shark Tank or one of the
15:57dumb Paul brothers.
15:59Yeah, that card.
15:59How was I supposed to know that?
16:00That card's worth, like, 15 million.
16:01How am I going to know that back in, like, 2005?
16:05The likelihood is that we all just had trash, but you just don't know.
16:09Yeah.
16:10Yeah.
16:11I don't know.
16:12I thought your son was into Magic the Gathering back in the day.
16:15I don't believe so.
16:16I had a roommate in college that was into Magic the Gathering.
16:20That's after I moved out.
16:21Who was that?
16:23Can't remember his name.
16:25I can't remember all my roommates' names.
16:27Yeah.
16:28Yeah.
16:28But when I left, there was the crazy bike rider who was stinky and sweaty all the time,
16:33and then the dude that had, like, amphibians in his room.
16:38He had, like, snakes and lizards.
16:39No, no.
16:40He had the thing that they were in Aruba all over the place.
16:43Iguanas.
16:43He had iguana.
16:44I lived with an iguana.
16:47He cut out the...
16:48He should have let it loose to eat all the cockroaches in your kitchen.
16:52He would have never gone hungry.
16:53Is that what they like to eat?
16:55Cockroaches?
16:56They eat bugs.
16:56They eat a lot of bugs.
16:57Well, the iguana guy replaced the guy who had an anaconda in his pants.
17:00That's true.
17:01Yeah, that's...
17:02I mean, if you have an anaconda in your pants, that's quite a...
17:05That's quite a nature find.
17:06Is that house still there?
17:08Oh, yeah.
17:08Is it still there?
17:09It basically looks the same.
17:09Does it really?
17:10You drive by, it basically looks...
17:12So the whole neighborhood hasn't changed?
17:14Not really.
17:14Not much.
17:15That hasn't changed, but Route 1 in College Park has gotten a big glow up.
17:19Oh, yeah.
17:20I mean, it doesn't look anything like it has.
17:21I've heard anything like it has.
17:22I've been down Route 1 in years.
17:24No, no.
17:24Route 1 looks totally different, but you just go a couple blocks back, it looks the same.
17:29Oh, yeah.
17:29Yeah, of course.
17:30I mean, it just looks the same.
17:31I mean, if you're a landlord of a flop house, what do you need to change it for?
17:34It doesn't matter.
17:35I don't know if some builder would come in and clear it out.
17:37You have an endless stream of people that are willing to rent your property.
17:39And it doesn't have to be nice.
17:41Yeah.
17:42And they aren't.
17:45636-1067 is the number.
