02:00Kolejne momenty w deathmatchu.
02:01Wszystko nie było dla mnie, to nie było to.
02:06Właściwie nie małe miejsce.
02:23Właściwie nie małe.
02:25Właściwie nie małe rzeczy.
02:30I wrestling became my escape.
02:34It was a false reality.
02:37A place where no one can hurt me.
02:40You know, that's why I get into wrestling.
02:43Maybe I could be somebody else's escape.
02:48But I wanted to make it more believable.
02:53I'm taking incredible amounts of punishment.
02:57Because the more believable that is, the more they're going to get into it.
03:02You know, and forget about what's bothering them.
03:05My name is Dylan Summers, but you probably know me better as the Necrobutcher.
03:12I got into deathmatch wrestling because I wanted to test myself.
03:17And I saw the guys in the main event doing deathmatches.
03:20And I said, all right, I want to be in the main event, so that's what I have to do.
03:27A deathmatch is death-defying wrestling.
03:30My name is Dave Prasak, and I was one of the commentators for Necrobutcher vs. Samoa Joe.
03:37Necrobutcher developed a reputation as one of the very best at the deathmatch style of wrestling.
03:42He was very reminiscent of someone like a Bruiser Brody with the crazy hair, a wild demeanor.
03:48You never knew what he was going to do next.
03:51He's got barge wire wrapped around his fist.
03:53I've seen that guy do things with his body that I couldn't ask a man to do.
03:59Glass, thumbtaps, mouse traps, flores of light tubes, anything that might cut you.
04:07Jesus!
04:07Night after night, he volunteers himself, and he will always be the king of the deathmatches to me.
04:14Matter, man.
04:14Jesus!
04:15I'm Madman Pondo.
04:17Me and Necro, we wrestled each other for years and always left a statement anywhere that we went.
04:23No, he's not!
04:23I want people to believe they're watching a physical confrontation.
04:30That psychology comes from a very real place.
04:34As a child growing up in rural West Virginia, Dylan Summers excelled in school, setting him apart from those around
04:42him.
04:43West Virginia isn't exactly known for academic excellence, so I'd face the wrath of my schoolmates.
04:51That was like a daily thing when I was in school.
04:53If I had a bad day in school, I was going to watch wrestling with my dad on the weekends.
04:58You know, that was what I looked forward to.
05:00I was my best friend.
05:02And then I woke up one morning, and my mother said there was a fire.
05:09For my father was burned up, so.
05:12You didn't even get a seam at the funeral.
05:15You had to close casket.
05:19I just really dove deeply into wrestling because of something I did with him.
05:26After that, I was by myself all the time.
05:30Well, it was super tough.
05:31Through my entire school years, bullying is not the word.
05:35Like, I was way worse.
05:36I mean, punched, kicked, knocking downstairs.
05:39I couldn't tell you how many times my head was in toilets in high school.
05:42You know, and I just learned to flick that switch.
05:44You know, I just act like I was fine.
05:46And I just didn't want them to let them know they were hurting me.
05:49And that's why sometimes I could take incredible amounts of punishment.
05:54When I flick that switch, you can't hurt me.
05:56You can't hurt me.
05:57No matter what you do, you can't hurt me.
06:00And once I showed him what I could do, I was in the main events to stay.
06:07Nekro Butcher, man, my dude was carrying the flag for deathmatch wrestling.
06:12I'm Eddie Kingston, pro wrestler, and I was there when Nekro and Joe decided to go at it.
06:18In the early 2000s, there was one company, folks, WWE.
06:24That's on TV.
06:25But you got guys over here killing themselves, doing independent wrestling.
06:29We wanted to show we're different from WWE, doing it our way.
06:35Dissatisfied with mainstream wrestling on TV, hardcore fans flocked to the independents,
06:41where performers pushed the limits.
06:45Almost every company, there was some type of deathmatch in it.
06:48That is not right.
06:50But some people considered it garbage wrestling.
06:53Then Ring of Honor came out, you know, hold for hold, hard hitting, all that stuff.
06:58Ring of Honor set a standard for independent wrestling with guys like Homicide, Low Key, Brian Danielson, Christopher Daniels, CM
07:08Punk.
07:09And then you had Samoa Joe, who was carrying the flag of pro wrestling.
07:16Samoa Joe!
07:18Although Samoa Joe is a top star today, in 2005, he was still making his name on the indie scene.
07:25There was never a doubt in my mind that I was one of the best wrestlers in the world.
07:29Once that curtain brushes past my face and we're out there in front of the crowd, the switch is turned
07:34and we're ready to go.
07:37My name is Nu'ufalao Joel Sienoa.
07:40I won half of the war that was Joe vs. Necro.
07:45My whole life has pretty much been on stage with my family's Polynesian show.
07:49Probably did two or three world tours before I ever stepped foot in a wrestling ring.
07:52You know, it definitely prepared me for this career.
07:55In entertainment, you need your hook.
07:56And at my core, my style is walk you down, smash you in the face.
08:05Ring of Honor at the time had become champion.
08:08We've had a two-year run with the heavyweight championship and the rest is history.
08:14At the time, I was a consistent main eventer doing death matches.
08:18I said, all right, now what?
08:20I wanted to test myself against the best in the business.
08:25But what had gotten to me was that he didn't want no part of that.
08:32At the time, Ring of Honor wrestlers had a reputation for dismissing the death match style.
08:38So crossovers were rare.
08:42I always saw this a lot of death match wrestlers.
08:44They always felt like they were kind of looked down upon.
08:46The truth of it is, you know, guys in ROH, we had our style.
08:50You know, we had what we were proud of what we were doing.
08:52It's a very different world.
08:53I mean, me personally, you know, I'm down to Russell whoever.
08:57That's never been an issue for me.
08:59But as far as, like, Russell, like, Necrobutcher, you know, it was never brought up to me or ever brought
09:04up, ever.
09:07I think the fans probably have more to do with this than anything else.
09:12Before social media, we had message boards where super hardcore nerdy fans like me would go and they would just
09:18talk to each other and talk about matches they've seen.
09:21If you went to the Ring of Honor board, it was a little bit like noses up in the air,
09:24like all of the wrestling was beneath it.
09:27My name is Rob Naylor, and I worked at places like CZW and NXT and FCW.
09:32And I, at the time, went on the Ring of Honor message board, and I was like, I want to
09:37see Samoa Joe wrestle Necro.
09:39Then, oh my God, the barrage of angry other wrestling fans.
09:44You're an idiot.
09:45He sucks.
09:45They just did one big bad Necro butcher to sully their wonderful organization.
09:50But then, there was an incident at Chikara.
09:54Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Chikara!
09:59Stepping out of the hardcore scene, Necrobutcher and Madman Pondo enter a family-friendly tag team tournament, putting Necro on
10:08a collision course with Samoa Joe.
10:10Chikara was, bring the grandma, bring the kids, you're going to have a fun time watching the wrestling.
10:16In this lovely little cafeteria.
10:18It might have been a bit weird on paper, but I could not say no, because that was my only
10:25source of income.
10:27I didn't care who these guys were. I was just going to beat their ass.
10:30It just so happened that two of them were Ring of Honor students.
10:36Since Ring of Honor didn't want to send someone they were going to beat, they just sent a couple of
10:39their students.
10:40I was nervous, because I didn't really know who Necrobutcher was.
10:43And he's like, we'll just go out there and we'll just brawl.
10:47I didn't really learn that in school.
10:49Tonight it's going to be nothing but curtains for you two.
10:52We were definitely a little nervous, but we figured, hey, we got this.
10:56Yeah, yeah.
10:57Boy, howdy, we're really wrong, buddy.
11:03We had to try to make a believable match with someone who doesn't know what they're doing.
11:07So when they start staking the place up, I'm just going to beat their ass.
11:13I do what I do because this is my job, and I need the money.
11:17What package are you offering to promoters?
11:19You have to offer something different.
11:21I think I'm pretty darn different.
11:24Some people were very concerned and believed that Kondo and Necro took advantage of the suit.
11:31The Ring of Honor board, forget about it.
11:33They were really mad at Necrobutcher.
11:34There's only another reason for them not to like him.
11:36It's just like, how dare he, you know.
11:39That's breaking the code.
11:41Oh, he's unsafe.
11:46He's reckless.
11:48Chakar, you don't really do that stuff.
11:50Who cares?
11:55I think people felt it entertaining.
11:57That's what I do.
11:58I beat people up in an entertaining manner.
12:01He was knocked out from the clothesline.
12:02I got knocked out twice in the match.
12:04His chest looks like hamburger meat.
12:06I have no idea where I'm at.
12:07It was just survival.
12:09Yeah.
12:10It was a little rough.
12:11Yeah.
12:13Turns out I got the last lap.
12:15That's why I got Samoa Joe to fight me.
12:17You know?
12:18After the match, message boards had their little rumor mills going.
12:23The rumor was that Joe was not happy.
12:25Because Joe was one of their mentors coming out of Ring of Honor.
12:30And I think he may have felt ROH was disrespected by these guys.
12:34And it perfectly set the stage for Joe to face Necro to get some revenge.
12:39Cutting a standing ovation from the fans.
12:41The fans bought into it.
12:42And they're like, all right, he's going to get dealt some justice via Samoa Joe.
12:46As discussion on the internet heats up, promoter Ian Rotten sees an opportunity.
12:52Ian Rotten here, owner, promoter of IWA Mid-South Wrestling.
12:56As an independent wrestling promoter, Ian Rotten had to come up with unique matches.
13:01There's no television program to try to really build a story.
13:05You have to use the internet.
13:07And Ian Rotten was gearing up for his first event in Philadelphia at the old ECW arena.
13:13And he needed a big match to fill the seats.
13:17The match that had long seemed impossible suddenly became inevitable.
13:22After the Chikara incident, Necro Butcher and Samoa Joe signed with Ian Rotten.
13:27And the match is set.
13:29This is the first time that I remember that this legit went down between a deathmatch wrestler and a pure
13:37pro wrestler.
13:38Here we go.
13:39For one night in Philadelphia, I'm going to have the fight of my life against the baddest dude of all
13:45time.

18:16Vice Fights.
18:17Friday nights.
18:21With Necro Butcher vs. Samoa Joe set, Joe takes to the mic to go after his opponent.
18:29There's some people here who are bullies, and there's some who are clients.
18:34These all-in-law students.
18:36They were taken advantage of by a bully.
18:38I don't agree with being called a bully.
18:41That's what I'm saying.
18:42What the f*** is that?
18:42He thinks he's stuck in a ring and beat a bunch of kids?
18:45He thinks he can get peeled up, drink his ass off, and call himself a bat?
18:48You have no idea how intense Necro was about that promo.
18:54He would recite sentences to me about that promo every day.
18:58That affected Necro.
19:00He's hardcore.
19:01He's this.
19:01He's that.
19:02Go f*** that.
19:03He never spent the time in the dungeon.
19:05I thought to myself, wow, so he thinks I'm not good enough to be in there with him.
19:09Okay, fine.
19:10I got this.
19:10And now's my chance to make a statement.
19:12The Necro Butcher is f***ing dead.
19:16Making reference to Necro Butcher.
19:21So, you know, dude, can I be honest?
19:24Legitimately, I look back, and I literally knew nothing about all these moving pieces
19:29that were a part of it.
19:30Like, yeah, I never trained a kid at ROH school a day in my life.
19:34Like, I've never watched the match.
19:37It was mentioned to me for a promo.
19:39About, oh, yeah, he roughed up a couple of kids at the ROH school,
19:43so you're, like, going to get revenge.
19:44Are you cool with it?
19:45I was like, yeah, sure.
19:46It's part of the show, man.
19:48But the more I hear, the more I realize that old Ian Rodden may have been telling people
19:52a lot of different tales, trying to get certain reactions out of them.
19:56Well, I mean, there was gossip.
19:57You weren't talented.
19:59You were doing something that was beneath them.
20:00I don't know if it was true or not.
20:02I said, a lot of people are going to watch this.
20:04So I just knew I had to show them what I could do, so they could not deny me any
20:08longer.
20:11For me personally, my wife, then girlfriend at the time, she lived close to Philly.
20:16So, like, I literally took the booking because I was trying to get some ass.
20:25We were definitely different mindsets walking into this match.
20:29Until I got to the arena, then I realized it was something different.
20:33On June 11, 2005, hundreds packed the ECW arena, expecting a bloodbath.
20:41This is IWA Mid-South Wrestling.
20:44As I get to the building, you know, the boys are standing outside.
20:48And I'm just like, yo, what's up, fellas?
20:50And they go, yo, what's up, man?
20:51I've been waiting for this.
20:52And I'm like, all right, cool, homie.
20:54You know, what the f*** is going on here, man?
20:57Like, I had just come back from Japan, having flown all night, drinking.
21:03I'm going to sober up.
21:04I'm going to get in my 72 Ford pickup and drive to Philadelphia and fight Samojo.
21:09I had arrived within an hour of showtime.
21:12Went down to my little secluded spot and just waited my turn.
21:17Typically in a pro wrestling match, a referee will check in with opponents.
21:21What is the plan finish?
21:22Is there anything I need to know about?
21:23There was none of that on this day.
21:25My name is Bryce Remsberg, and I was the referee for the infamous Samoa Joe necrobutcher match.
21:32The conversation that I might have had with the two of them was definitely shorter than 30 seconds.
21:36My mind was made up beforehand.
21:38Whatever he was going to do to me would not stop me.
21:41Not in that building, not on that night.
21:43I know what I'm going there for.
21:45I'm going to get cracked, he's going to get cracked, and it's going to be a brawl.
21:48Everyone in the locker room had the same questions as the wrestling fans did about,
21:53do they really hate each other?
21:54Is this going to turn into a real fight?
21:56What's going to happen?
21:58All that shit lent in to creating an atmosphere and a vibe where it was like, somebody's going to die
22:03tonight.
22:04And we are ready for a long-awaited matchup.
22:08I recall being in the ring before the match started looking up and seeing pretty much the whole locker room
22:12lined up around the commentary table.
22:14I did commentary with Eddie Kingston and CM Punk.
22:18We weren't doing professional commentary by any means.
22:21It was just us reacting to the spectacle that we were seeing.
22:24I walked up with a hot dog, sat down, and I said, let's do this.
22:29This is a match everybody's been waiting to see.
22:30By that point, everybody was foaming at the mouth to see this thing.
22:35I went up to the balcony to watch this and was like, holy shit, the whole building was chanting.
22:43And as I'm kind of walking around the ring here, you start to hear, f**k him up, Joe.
22:48Necro's going to f**k you up.
22:50Philadelphia is just very bloodthirsty.
22:53They wanted to see violence.
22:54They wanted to see blood.
22:55And they wanted to see Joe kill Necro for a shirt.
22:59There's the man right there who wears the shirt that says, choose death.
23:02There he is, lady.
23:05All the combustible elements were there.
23:07They were just primed and ready to just kick the s**t out of each other.
23:10Face to face, take off.
23:12You obviously know they didn't come here to see any goddamn wrestling.
23:14They came here to see the fight.
23:16Let's let everybody know what this is really about.
23:20The easiest way to make sure everybody knows it's a no-rules brawl without announcing it is, you know,
23:25take the rules and throw them over the top rope.
23:27They don't need a referee.
23:31There was already, like, a bunch of gunpowder in the keg.
23:34With no referee, it's chaos.
23:37Now we've got everybody where we want them.
23:39And now we take them on the journey.
23:41Here we go!
23:42Break it down in Philadelphia!
23:44These four arms around telling this guy how this match is going to go.
23:48You wanted to establish that's how hard you want to throw?
23:51I said, all right.
23:53You have now just set your punishment gauge.
23:56He could have done it much easier.
23:58It's all about believability.
24:00I want them to think he's trying to kill me.
24:02If I want to have any chance of beating him, I want to fight with him on the floor.
24:05I want to brawl.
24:06Oh, it's a carry outside the head of an acro-butcher!
24:10And that is a way you can suck in the crowd.
24:14I want him to hit me.
24:16I was going to fly over the guardrail.
24:18But he hit me so hard, I couldn't go to the guardrail.
24:22Oh, Jesus.
24:22Oh, here comes Sean!
24:24Down goes acro!
24:26I'm just going to calmly walk over the guardrail now.
24:31I'm going to sit down and compose myself for a minute after that.
24:34All these fans are moving!
24:36They're part like the Red Sea!
24:37Trying to beat the deathmatch wrestler with pro wrestling.
24:40I'm using my body as a weapon to try to break you up.
24:42It was meant to accentuate that contrast to styles.
24:45My neck hurts back to his feet with the headbutt!
24:47And now, there's the headbutt.
24:49You don't headbutt a Samoan.
24:51That's like a rule you're taught.
24:52I had a very bad cut on my head.
24:55I knew a stiff breeze would bust me open.
24:59Let alone a Samoan headbutt.
25:00Any deathmatch wrestler will tell you that if they've already got something open,
25:04they can't wait for you to work it.
25:06And we got that f*** open.
25:09Necro's busting open!
25:10Authentic headbutts, and then Necro's bleeding.
25:13So, the fervor only grows from there.
25:16Necro learned a secret from me.
25:18If you want a standing ovation, you knock your chairs out from underneath them.
25:23Everybody in this building is on their feet!
25:26Standing ovation.
25:27I don't think Samoan Joe was really enjoying himself at this point in the match.
25:31I was having a grand old time myself.
25:34I mean, not the best feeling, but...
25:37Trying to get him to a place where he could safely do the power slam,
25:40or so I thought.
25:41You know, when you make people get out of their seat and move around,
25:45you run the risk of spilling drinks.
25:47You could see it all over the floor.
25:49There was just wet spots everywhere.
25:51So maybe a power slam wasn't the best idea.
25:55He ran at me.
25:56I went to scoop him.
25:58I don't know if his foot slipped or whatever,
25:59but as we went for the lift,
26:01I felt him grab me real tight.
26:03He was just stuck to me.
26:04And then pushed my hips through, and he was going over.
26:08Oh, power slam was hard!
26:11Yeah, it didn't quite work the way he wanted it to.
26:13And we're wondering in the commentary position,
26:15how is that physically possible?
26:17I've never seen such a thing!
26:19I turn around, I go, Jesus, you good?
26:21And he's like, uh...
26:23I hear that sickening thud of skull on cement.
26:27That right there is a sign of danger.
26:29That's something you're not going to see on Monday Night Raw.
26:33In today's wrestling world,
26:36that match shouldn't continue, probably.
26:37But that match and that night,
26:39that atmosphere,
26:41that energy from the crowd,
26:43it was like,
26:43now we're in the flow.
26:45And it just got more violent,
26:48more f***ed up from there.
26:49Holy shit!
26:51Holy shit!

29:53Just two minutes
29:54into the match,
29:55Samoa Joe drives
29:56Necrobutcher face first
29:58onto the concrete.
30:00At that time,
30:01we didn't stop.
30:02We go into the wheels
30:03for a lot.
30:05Maybe a normal person
30:07would have been hurt,
30:07but I was fine.
30:11Oh, that boot
30:12definitely did not tickle.
30:14Oh, Joe's wiping
30:15the blood off him.
30:16Oh, that's a great touch.
30:17Wiping the blood off his head
30:19and wiping it on his chest.
30:21The fans are such
30:22an integral part to all this.
30:24They're so into it.
30:25If you look at that floor
30:26right now,
30:27you could be any number
30:28of bodily fluids, so
30:30when things got to the outside,
30:32this was Necro's environment.
30:34But any time we were
30:35inside the ring,
30:35you know, that was my domain.
30:37Over the rail,
30:38back and go.
30:39Body language is,
30:40I don't think, much of you.
30:41Arrogant pin,
30:42you know, elbow on the chin,
30:43not really scooping the leg,
30:45but in the face of that,
30:46you know, here he is,
30:46fighting back.
30:47Necro kicked out.
30:49He is not giving up.
30:51He is continuing to fight
30:53if he puts the arm up.
30:55And then the very pro-Joe crowd,
30:58you start hearing more
30:59Necro, Necro, Necro chants.
31:02And it's because of Necro
31:03selling, selling, selling.
31:05The fans get louder and louder.
31:08And now you have that dynamic,
31:10the fans fighting with each other.
31:12They're turning.
31:13Great to hear all these fans
31:15right here in a chorus.
31:16I understood what role
31:17I played in this.
31:18This is somebody fighting
31:19against all the odds,
31:20you know, fighting to break
31:21out of his box
31:22in the face of this
31:23insurmountable entity.
31:25Off the ropes comes Necro.
31:27Connects with the boot.
31:28Joe's weapon is his killer instinct
31:30and his ability.
31:31Those are just tools.
31:33For me, the opponent,
31:35the guardrail,
31:37the ring itself,
31:38those are the tools of my trade.
31:41You don't really have time
31:42to be hurt
31:42because you got to think,
31:43OK, what am I doing next?
31:44What am I doing next?
31:45Oh, yeah, I was trying
31:46to find a piece of guardrail
31:47I could rip off.
31:49I'm going to smash you
31:50with the guardrail.
31:52Is that, like,
31:53discussed beforehand?
31:55No, no.
31:59It was a good sport about it.
32:04Yeah, it sucks.
32:05It's not pleasant.
32:06You know, it's not pleasant.
32:08It's not pleasant.
32:10What people don't realize
32:11is that Necro is blind also.
32:13Very blind.
32:14I have my glasses here.
32:16I can't tell who's who.
32:17There's a red light there,
32:18red light over there,
32:19but I can't see nothing.
32:21I don't want a guardrail.
32:22It's a time.
32:25He did that,
32:26and I was like,
32:26jeez, I did not expect it.
32:29This guy just swings
32:30for the general fuzzy mound
32:32that's in front of him,
32:33and he hopes that it connects.
32:34I hit him with the perfect punch.
32:37Like, I felt all of my knuckles
32:40hit him right in the jaw.
32:43And I thought,
32:44I'm going to do it again.
32:48That's the worst thing
32:49you do for me.
32:50Now the switch turns
32:51an extra couple of degrees,
32:53and I have come
32:53to destroy worlds,
32:55and this is the world before me,
32:57which I must lay waste to.
32:58Before I could do it
32:59a third time,
32:59I went flying through the air.
33:01Did you see the sweat fight?
33:03Holy shit!
33:07Holy f***!
33:09Good God.
33:12It's just...
33:13Oh yeah,
33:14I have blood everywhere, man.
33:16This was wild.
33:18That was the one
33:19where I was like,
33:20holy shit.
33:22That one made me stand up
33:23in my chair,
33:24and I was thinking
33:26about going down there.
33:28What the f*** is that?
33:30Is it possible
33:30that you got a concussion
33:31right then and there?
33:32Not me, not the kid.
33:34A normal man, perhaps.
33:35I think people would find
33:36that hard to believe.
33:37That's not going to hurt me.
33:38I know what I'm doing.
33:40You know,
33:40everybody talks about
33:41his face hitting the floor.
33:42What they don't talk about
33:43is his shoulder
33:43coming down on top of my face
33:45and the back of my head
33:46being driven into the cement.
33:49I thought my nose was broken.
33:51I thought I'd shattered my orbital.
33:54I broke my nose a billion times,
33:55so it wasn't uncommon.
33:56But, yeah,
33:57this one put another fracture
33:58in my nose.
33:59I give him this.
34:00At least he looks worse for wear
34:01for the whole deal.
34:02There's an old
34:02Johnny Valentine quote.
34:04He said,
34:05I can't make you
34:05believe in wrestling,
34:07but I can make you
34:08believe in Johnny Valentine.
34:09No one is ever going to
34:10watch that match.
34:11Say, yeah,
34:12that's all fake.
34:14I'm tough enough
34:16that I can take that shit.

35:56When you're not hydrated,
35:57the brain can't make
35:59the best decisions.
36:01Element is just
36:02one more weapon
36:03against all of the hazards
36:05that we deal with
36:06on a daily basis.
36:08It seems to have
36:08the highest content of sodium
36:10and I find that
36:11that is exactly
36:12what my body functions on.
36:14It keeps you
36:15as sharp as you can be
36:17despite all
36:18of the environmental hazards.
36:42In the heart of the legendary
36:45ECW arena,
36:47Samoa Joe and Necrobutcher
36:48lead everything in the ring
36:50and on the floor.
36:52Now see,
36:52this is what you call
36:53long-term storytelling, guys.
36:56Remember they had
36:57that Chikara match?
36:58He's not in one
36:58for a suplex off the apron.
37:00I suplexed the kid
37:01off the apron.
37:02He's not in one
37:03for a suplex off the apron.
37:04He's not in one
37:04and then a month
37:05or two later,
37:06the master suplexes me
37:08off the apron.
37:10Long-term storytelling
37:12at its finest.
37:14You know what sucks?
37:14I wish I could have said
37:15I planned all this shit,
37:16but happy accident.
37:19Yeah, happy accidents.
37:20Here we go.
37:22The way Necro is moving
37:23and selling,
37:25he's definitely hurt
37:26and he's banged up,
37:27but he's with it.
37:29Just to see Necro get up,
37:30we were like,
37:31he's like rising
37:32from the dead.
37:33I'm not a guy
37:34that will ever dictate
37:35to somebody
37:36what dangerous things
37:37they should do
37:37to their own body.
37:38I put the ball
37:39in his court
37:39and I say,
37:39you tell me
37:41how far you want this to go,
37:43but he had a vision.
37:46It's a more primal vision.
37:47It's definitely not eloquent
37:49in its execution.
37:50I think here,
37:52I was telling him,
37:52put the guardrail
37:53up on the turnbuckle.
37:54There's so many times
37:55in this match
37:56where I just said some shit
37:58that could easily
37:59be misinterpreted,
38:01but every time
38:02I told him to do something,
38:03he did exactly
38:04what I wanted him to do.
38:05In those circumstances,
38:06I will default
38:08to the masochist
38:09and let him
38:09paint his picture.
38:11His ability
38:12to dish out punishment
38:13and my ability
38:14to absorb punishment
38:16is what I based
38:17the match upon.
38:18Power up,
38:19coming up!
38:22There's somebody
38:23who's going to die!
38:24There's no death!
38:25In some form or fashion,
38:28they were reading
38:28the same book.
38:30I'm not sure
38:30they're in the same chapter,
38:31same page quite,
38:32but to be done
38:34even remotely safely
38:35involves a breed
38:37of cooperation.
38:39The way Nekro's
38:40looking at it
38:41right here is
38:42the more he gets
38:43beat up
38:44and still stands up,
38:46he's becoming
38:47a bigger star.
38:49Back in the day,
38:50before that match,
38:52me and Nekro,
38:53we was in
38:54a light tube match.
38:56We were just
38:57bloody as hell.
38:59I suplexed Nekro,
39:00and one of them
39:02went in so deep
39:03in his arm,
39:04it just cut a whole
39:06chunk out of there.
39:08I start yelling out,
39:09the ambulance!
39:11Ambulance!
39:12And I'm just feeling
39:13terrible that this
39:14happened to Nekro,
39:15and finally Nekro
39:16looked over to me
39:17and he said,
39:17Pondo,
39:18would you chill out
39:19and cheer up?
39:20You know,
39:21he just never
39:22complained about it.
39:23This was his chance
39:24to get his name
39:25out there
39:26and show the world
39:26exactly what
39:27the Nekro butcher
39:28can do.
39:29And he just
39:29kept on going,
39:31and here he is today.
39:33It's a very old-school
39:35way of getting
39:36somebody over.
39:37It works,
39:38people can register that.
39:40People can respect
39:41an underdog.
39:42Is he going to get
39:43back to his feet?
39:44The drama continues
39:45to build.
39:46It's great storytelling.
39:49Joe with the cover!
39:51No, he gets it!
39:51It has to be one-sided
39:52for the story
39:53I'm trying to tell.
39:54Too many matches today,
39:56there are two
39:57back and forth.
39:58The fans don't buy
39:59the comeback
40:00because the guys
40:01don't take the time
40:02to set the heat
40:03the way they need to.
40:05The whole point was,
40:06in my head,
40:07was like,
40:08we're going to put
40:08this guy through
40:09this carnival of torture
40:09that he's won it
40:10so badly for so long.
40:11We're going to give him
40:12everything he asked for.
40:15That could have been
40:16a paralyzation there.
40:17Had somebody been
40:18an inch this way
40:19or an inch that way,
40:20that could have easily
40:21been a paralyzation
40:22there as well.
40:22Cover!
40:25He kicked out!
40:26The look on Joe's face
40:28is like,
40:28what do I got to do
40:29to put this guy away?
40:31They're chanting,
40:32Nekro,
40:32he's earning the respect
40:34to the crowd.
40:35The fans of Philadelphia
40:36are going nuts, baby!
40:36All the punishment
40:37Nekro Butcher takes,
40:39he's going to make it matter.
40:40He's not just going to
40:41blow off
40:42any kind of damage.
40:43And they're showing
40:44their support for Joe
40:45as well.
40:46Chop across the chest
40:47of Nekro.
40:47I wanted to look
40:48really feeble
40:49and barely on my feet.
40:50That's what I was
40:51trying to do here.
40:52A man doesn't win
40:55when he's relaxed
40:56and thinks he's in control.
40:58A man wins
40:59when he thinks
40:59he's losing.
41:03There it is.
41:04He's fighting back.
41:06Boom, boom.
41:07Oh my God.
41:08In the moment,
41:10I'm annoyed at that.
41:11Like, what the f***, man?
41:14Put some oil, Joe,
41:15with the palm strikes.
41:16Classic pro wrestling technique,
41:18the open-hand palm strikes.
41:19Bro, put your hands up.
41:20That's the first rule.
41:21With each slap,
41:22you can see
41:23a mist of blood
41:24coming off the face
41:25of Nekro Butcher.
41:28If I had to
41:30pinpoint a time
41:31when my girlfriend
41:32at the time
41:33had left the match,
41:34it was where the blood
41:35was visibly flying
41:37into the crowd.
41:38She said she almost
41:39threw up
41:39and then she decided
41:41to bounce.
41:43And that's the whole point
41:44of what I was doing.
41:45When you're dog walking
41:47somebody,
41:47it's not a pretty affair.
41:49And that's what
41:49that whole sequence
41:50was about.
41:51I've had enough.
41:52I'm done with this.
41:53It's time for you
41:54to die now.
41:57Oh my God!

44:20The match
44:21between Necro Butcher
44:22and Samoa Joe
44:23barrels toward
44:25its violent finish.
44:26Look at the blood
44:27on the body
44:28of Samoa Joe
44:29from Necro.
44:33This was not
44:34any ordinary
44:35wrestling match
44:35so it wasn't
44:36going to end
44:36any ordinary way.
44:38Joe's here
44:38because he wants
44:39to be here.
44:40Necro has nothing
44:40to lose.
44:41So the story
44:42of Necro
44:43calling these spots
44:44that lead to his demise.
44:45Stay down!
44:46He's saying
44:46that I'm going to lose
44:47but I'm going to
44:47go down swinging.
44:48The lasting image
44:49of that match
44:50is the final strike.
44:53And Samoa Joe
44:54effectively wins the match
44:56by knocking
44:57Necro out.
44:58What is unique
44:59about this finish
44:59is that it's
45:00in essence
45:01a technical knockout.
45:02He didn't have to
45:03just pin him
45:03for three seconds.
45:04He kept him down
45:05for ten.
45:06He just could not
45:07take any more
45:09beat.
45:11and that's it.
45:13Samoa Joe
45:14gets the knockout.
45:15Knockout win
45:16for Samoa Joe.
45:19Your great messiah
45:21of hardcore death
45:22has been
45:22stricken down.
45:24All justice
45:25has been served.
45:29What a mess.
45:30Though the match
45:31may be over
45:32Joe gives Necro
45:33one last parting shot.
45:35Hey!
45:36Oh he's not done!
45:36Brother was down
45:37there selling so long
45:38so I went over there
45:38I gave him like
45:39a little kick
45:39in the head
45:40just like I knew
45:41he popped right up
45:42and started
45:42slinging over the fences
45:43and the monster
45:44rises again
45:44from the dead.
45:46Really?
45:46Really?
45:47Get out of here.
45:49The hardcore Jesus
45:51is pissed!
45:51I'm like well
45:52I can't leave you
45:52laying in a puddle.
45:53I mean like
45:54I thought it was
45:54important to leave
45:55the arena
45:56with him
45:57at least standing.
45:59What a war
46:00between these two men!
46:02If there's no fight
46:03in somebody
46:04then there's nothing
46:05really there
46:06to care about.
46:07So it was imperative
46:08to me that we left
46:09Necro with the right
46:11kind of perception
46:11on him of being
46:12just one of the
46:13toughest mother
46:13on planet Earth.
46:17Congratulations
46:20to the year huh?
46:21Wow.
46:25Everyone in the building
46:26knew that they had just
46:27witnessed something
46:28great.
46:29and when the fans
46:30finally got a chance
46:31to see it on video
46:32it just intensified
46:33the buzz about the match
46:35on the internet.
46:37How ironic
46:38that that event
46:38was called
46:39something to prove
46:40because that's exactly
46:42what I was trying to do
46:43and I think that's
46:44exactly what I did.
46:46That night in Philly
46:47was special.
46:48I knew I'm never
46:50going to make it
46:50to Madison Square Garden.
46:52That was my
46:52Madison Square Garden.
46:54After that match
46:56I was a made man
46:57in that building.
46:59and that's all
47:00I ever wanted.
47:03You know
47:04coming through
47:05the curtain
47:05in the post-match
47:06it couldn't have been
47:06more I mean
47:08docile.
47:09You know like
47:10Necro came back
47:12dapped him up.
47:13I went to Joe
47:14immediately
47:15and thanked him.
47:16I obviously had
47:17tremendous amount
47:18of respect for him
47:19as a wrestler.
47:20He trusted the vision
47:21of what I had
47:22and helped me
47:23follow it through.
47:26Well after the match
47:27I had another show
47:27to do that
47:28that evening
47:28in the same arena.
47:30So I had to
47:30go back down
47:31to the catacombs
47:32and put my skull
47:33back together
47:35and catch my breath
47:36and get ready
47:36to go out there
47:37and do it all over again.
47:38And here comes
47:39the butcher!
47:41You'd think maybe
47:42he'd be tired
47:43but no
47:43he just kept going.
47:46Excuse me!
47:47He never went
47:4980%
47:50you know
47:50he was always
47:51110.
47:52It's a very
47:53heavy price
47:54taking suplexes
47:55to the floor
47:56taking these bumps
47:57and he did it
47:58because he had
47:59pride in what
48:00he was doing
48:00and he wanted
48:01to get to the
48:02next level.
48:03It certainly
48:04seemed to me
48:04that there was
48:05almost like a
48:06before and after
48:07for both of those guys.
48:09that eventually
48:10earned Nekro
48:11a regular spot
48:12in ROH
48:13for a couple of years.
48:15Ring of Honor
48:15could not deny me
48:16any longer.
48:17That's the Nekro Butcher!
48:18I was on every show
48:19for like four years.
48:22He goes on to be
48:23in the movie
48:23The Wrestler in 2008.
48:25Talk to me about it
48:26what do you want
48:26to do tonight?
48:27Are you cool
48:28with the staples?
48:28Maybe it was
48:29a mainstream moment.
48:30They were gunned.
48:31But at the time
48:32I had more wrestling
48:33to do.
48:34The Nekro Butcher!
48:36We were in this
48:36together as
48:37independent wrestlers.
48:38We were all
48:39trying just to
48:41set the world
48:41on fire
48:42with our wrestling.
48:43We were misfits.
48:45All of us.
48:45Even Joe was.
48:47We saw Samoa Joe's name
48:49getting bigger
48:50and bigger
48:50over time.
48:51There was a sense
48:52of pride.
48:54If any indie guy
48:56made it
48:56we were all proud.
48:58I finished up
48:59with ROH
49:00I moved on
49:00to TNA Wrestling
49:01and then moved on
49:02to WWE
49:02and now I currently
49:04find myself
49:04in All Elite Wrestling.
49:06It was obvious
49:08back then
49:08what sort of
49:10trajectory
49:10that man was on.
49:12This was a
49:14trajectory that was
49:15closed to me.
49:17Nekro Butcher
49:18never got his
49:19WWE run
49:21probably because
49:22he was such an outlaw.
49:24His home
49:24was independent wrestling
49:26and so
49:26it's honestly
49:27not much of a surprise
49:28that that was
49:29where he
49:30really excelled.
49:32Many independent wrestlers
49:33have gone on
49:34to have
49:34lotted careers
49:36all around the world.
49:37If you had asked me
49:38why maybe Nekro
49:40wasn't a part
49:40of that pantheon
49:41of people
49:44you know
49:44at the end of the day
49:45it's just hard
49:45to put on a cereal box
49:47you know.
49:48That's the thing
49:48about death matches
49:49and people just
49:50don't understand.
49:51They say that
49:52we make hot dogs
49:53and handshakes.
49:55I do believe
49:56that for Nekro
49:57the crowd
49:58would chant his name
49:59and to a wrestler
50:01having a crowd
50:02chant your name
50:03sing your song
50:04that means
50:05that means more to us
50:06than anything.
50:07You're not going to
50:08talk him out of
50:09what he loves.
50:10He loves wrestling.
50:12I was going to Japan
50:13like six times a year.
50:15I'd go to Mexico
50:15a couple times
50:16Puerto Rico
50:17and then in 2020
50:18I had just come back
50:20from Japan
50:21and I didn't know
50:23what was going on
50:23but I knew I was
50:24really sick.
50:27So
50:29I remember
50:30when I first
50:31seen him
50:32thinking to myself
50:33look at the weight
50:34that he lost.
50:39He had lost
50:40a lot of weight
50:42like a lot of weight
50:45and
50:47I didn't understand
50:49I didn't know
50:49what was going on.
50:51He's passing the charge.
50:53Shortly after that
50:54I went to visit him
50:55took us out to eat
50:57right before I left
50:59that's when he said
50:59hey man
51:00if I
51:01if I don't talk to you
51:03from this day on
51:04just realize
51:05I always appreciated
51:07everything you did for me
51:08and I'm like
51:08what are you talking about
51:09and
51:10and
51:12I'm telling him
51:13I'm like
51:14if you want me to
51:15stay
51:16I'll stay
51:17and he's like
51:18no.
51:19So
51:20that was when
51:21I found out
51:22that Necro
51:22had cancer.

55:29Diagnosed with
55:29stage 3 cancer
55:31Necrobutcher
55:32fights for his life
55:33Turns out
55:34I had
55:35Hodgkin's lymphoma
55:36I was in a hospital bed
55:37for about 9 months
55:39I had no energy
55:40whatsoever
55:40Everything hurt
55:43Laying in bed
55:44for 9 months
55:45gives you plenty of time
55:46to reevaluate things
55:47you know
55:48over the years
55:49I've beat so many guys up
55:51it's not even something
55:52I keep track of anymore
55:53and after a while
55:54they just blend together
55:56Looking back
55:57it was a Samoa Joe match
55:59Let's be honest
56:00that's what people
56:01are going to remember
56:01about me
56:03Quite honestly
56:04I'm baffled sometimes
56:06People talk about this match
56:08that weren't even alive
56:09when we did it
56:10I'm still very flattered by it
56:12It is one of the greatest
56:14brawls you will ever see
56:15It's a time capsule man
56:17If people want to know
56:18how the independents were
56:20from 2000 to 2010
56:22That was it
56:23They made a moment
56:25For all of us
56:26on the indies man
56:27Because I tell you right now
56:28more people started
56:29booking those kind of matches
56:32They were the spark
56:34Just how believable
56:35that brawl was
56:37is something that
56:38young wrestlers now
56:38draw inspiration for
56:40what a fight
56:41could be like
56:42It's wild that
56:44so many people
56:44have loved and enjoyed
56:45and taken pleasure
56:46from watching this
56:47I just never
56:49would have imagined
56:50would have taken on
56:51the life that it has
56:52It's cool that
56:54that was part of my journey
56:55It's neat
56:58As he wages
56:59his battle with cancer
57:00the necro butcher
57:01discovers a new outlook
57:04When I was in the bed
57:05I found something
57:06that was unshakable
57:08And that was myself
57:10In the game of life
57:12you're not in charge
57:14of where you start
57:15on the board
57:16The only thing you're
57:17in control of
57:18is when you quit
57:19It's going to hurt
57:20You're going to suffer
57:21But you have to believe
57:22in yourself
57:23And if you can't believe
57:24you can do it
57:24then you're suffering
57:25for nothing
57:27We did three cycles
57:29of chemo
57:30with no improvement
57:31And they said
57:32alright
57:32we don't see improvement
57:34on the fourth one
57:34we're going to quit
57:35and that's going to be that
57:37And when you know it
57:39that fourth one took
57:41And then
57:42got back into wrestling
57:46This is the guy
57:47that I have seen
57:49go through
57:50the craziest bumps
57:52that you could
57:52ever think about
57:55and walk away
57:57unscathed
57:58But
57:59look at him today
58:01He beat cancer
58:03His hip exploded
58:04He beat that
58:05Still punching people
58:07in the face
58:08That puts him
58:09solid in the
58:10bad motherf***er club
58:13I'm not moving
58:13around great right now
58:14but I'm moving
58:15around pretty good
58:15for age 52
58:18I'm still out there
58:19on the road
58:19I'm motivated
58:21I just had a rough
58:22match last week
58:23about died
58:28I understand
58:29the way we look back
58:31at things
58:31the further they get
58:33in the mirror
58:33And it's June 11, 2005
58:36We're in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
58:37That night in Philadelphia
58:38It was my most immediate
58:40important event
58:41in my life
58:42Yeah, wow
58:43That was better than that
58:45What does any artist want
58:48But for his art
58:49to be remembered fondly
58:51And I think we're past
58:52the point of this
58:53being remembered
58:54more than fondly
58:55So thank you, Samojo
58:57Thank you
58:58The feeling is mutual
58:59The thanks is mutual
59:00He managed to take
59:02a random afternoon
59:02that I was not expecting
59:04would be what it was
59:06And it's become
59:07kind of a touchstone
59:08for inspiration
59:08in the great zeitgeist
59:10of wrestling
59:10You know, to me
59:11I think that's when
59:12pro wrestling can be
59:13at its very best
59:14Listen to the crowd, Bazaar!
59:16I want him over
59:17with my ability
59:18to not quit
59:19And that's the message
59:20I try to tell people
59:21I haven't quit
59:22so you better not either
59:24I've had so many
59:25horrible things happen
59:26to me when I was young
59:28I just wanted to
59:29belong and not be
59:31by myself
59:33And I wanted to
59:34connect with other people
59:36that had the same
59:36passions I did
59:39Just appreciate the fine art
59:40that is professional wrestling
59:42And then to contribute
59:44to that fine art
59:45Well, what more
59:46could a man ask for?
