00:02When Caitlin Chunlin's son was diagnosed with a bone tumour, the family packed up their home in Alice Springs and
00:08moved to Adelaide.
00:09We decided to make the move so that our family could be together rather than constantly being apart for his
00:14treatment.
00:15Two years ago, they bought a block in the Springwood Estate in Gala East with plans to build their forever
00:21home.
00:22Our block would have been right here.
00:23But last week, they were among 75 buyers told by developer Wellco that their contracts will be cancelled.
00:30It was quite devastating for us because we'd held on to that hope that it was still going ahead.
00:35While they'll get their deposit back, finding a similar block in today's market will leave them out of pocket.
00:40We're looking at probably about $250,000 extra.
00:45Wellco has blamed the cancellation on planning changes that will increase traffic on a local road.
00:50It's an explanation the state government's not buying.
00:54We don't think that washes at all.
00:56The minister now looking at legal options in this case and broader safeguards to protect other buyers from similar experiences.
01:03I think what we're more likely to do is restrict the use of sunset clauses like many other states have
01:08done.
01:09In a statement, Wellco says it's continuing discussions with the town of Gala on stages 8 and 9 of the
01:15Springwood development.
01:16Buyers and the state government are still hopeful the contracts can be reinstated.
01:22I think it's only fair that they actually live up to their side of the bargain.
01:25We can move on and build our house as planned.
01:28Home buyers dealt a crushing blow and facing an uncertain future.
