New South Australian government plan proposes more high-density housing around Adelaide

It's affectionately known as a big country town, but more apartments and high-density living appears to be on the way for Adelaide. It's part of a 30-year plan to help end the housing crisis and boost the city's population.

00:00Well, it tells us how the government is planning to help tackle housing problems we're seeing

00:07and also population growth in the Greater Adelaide region over the next 30 years.

00:11Now, that Greater Adelaide region withholds the CBD but also broader suburbs as well.

00:17We're seeing a lot of developments in the northern and southern areas and it also stretches

00:22to regional areas like the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills too.

00:26And that patch has around 1.5 million people living in it and accounts for around 84% of

00:32the state's population.

00:34So this plan will plan where houses and jobs will be, what services will be needed, what

00:39major infrastructure there will be required and how it will be delivered as well as things

00:44like environmental and conservation protection too.

00:46Now, this is important because the plan estimates that population growth will reach around 2.2

00:52million people in that area by 2051.

00:55And currently we've got around 645,000 houses but this estimates that we need around 315,000

01:02more houses and those houses should be those sorts of high-density things, things like

01:07townhouses, houses with courtyards, duplexes and even apartments as well.

01:12But this plan isn't finalised yet, Melissa, so people in South Australia can provide their

01:17feedback before the consultation period ends at the beginning of November.
