00:00Bronco branding as a method of branding cattle was first described in the Land Journal in 1905
00:06and it was attributed to a man by the name of Compie True, who was a manager down at Boyd's
00:12Lagoon in South Australia.
00:13He actually described it in the Land Journal in 1905.
00:19So it was a method of branding cattle in the outback of Australia right up until the 50s.
00:25So things changed from having wooden panels to steel panels and all that sort of stuff.
00:30And then with the BTEC scheme in the 1970s, helicopters, road trains and calf cradles came in
00:37and the skills of the Australian stockmen was being lost.
00:42There's a couple of gentlemen from Udnadatta who their races have been shut down.
00:45George Birchmore, I can't think of this other one at the moment,
00:49needed something to keep their community going.
00:53They suggested Bronco branding, the rest of the committee said,
00:56nah, no one wants to do any hard work.
00:58So it fell by the wayside.
01:00They mentioned it to a bloke by the name of Rob Webster.
01:03And fortunately one day he happened to be on a plane going to Perth
01:07and a gentleman up in first class asked the hostess to go and get him and bring him up.
01:11And that gentleman happened to be R.M. Williams.
01:13Oh, wow.
01:14So he sat beside R.M. Williams and they had a good old young,
01:16because they were both from South Australia.
01:18That's where the connection came.
01:20And he said to R.M. Williams about the sport, the art of Australian stockmen dying out.
01:24So R.M. said, we can't let that happen.
01:27So he talked to the Hayes family at Alice Springs and a few other people
01:31and they held the first competition in Alice Springs in 1984
01:35and they turned the art and skills of the Australian stockmen into a sport.
