SCP-467 appears to be an empty phone booth. Although there is nothing extraordinary about the booth itself, so long as a human and a communications device are in the booth at the same time, its effects are easily observed. Communications devices receive a message from somebody the user knows. This call shows no preference for friends, family, loved ones, co-workers, or even just acquaintances. Curiously enough, later examination of phone records or call logs reveal that this call never happened, even though it may be observed and recorded.

00:02It's a balmy summer night in the early 1990s, somewhere in an anonymous town in the continental United States.
00:09A town not unlike your own.
00:11A car full of college students pulls up to the parking lot of what used to be a laundromat that's
00:16been closed for the past five years.
00:19Outside the building, a single phone booth stands, a beacon of eerie light against the darkness of the vacant lot.
00:26This is what the teenagers are here for.
00:28Not to fool around and drink beer in the abandoned laundromat like you might expect.
00:33They're here for the phone booth.
00:36Visiting the booth is a rite of passage for the local kids.
00:39According to legend, it's haunted, and if a person gets into it alone and picks up the receiver, they'll be
00:44told a terrible secret.
00:47Not that anyone is ever brave enough to tell their story afterwards.
00:51The boy driving the car, a short, scrawny mall goth by the name of Edmund, swears up and down that
00:56it works.
00:57He's a townie and knows all the local lore.
01:00I came out here last Halloween, he explains, and I saw Brian Miles break down crying.
01:06The other students in the car still think he's lying.
01:09Brian is the school's star quarterback, and none of them can imagine him crying in any circumstances.
01:14Least of all because of something he heard over the phone.
01:16They're not always bad calls, Edmund explains.
01:19Sometimes you get a good one, but you'll never know unless you try.
01:23The students all get out of the car and line up, waiting to use the phone.
01:27Egged on by the other members of the group, Edmund goes first.
01:31He steps into the booth, and the phone rings.
01:34When he picks it up, there's a female voice on the other end.
01:37Hello, Edmund.
01:38The voice says,
01:54Edmund hangs up.
01:55James is the next person to try the phone.
01:57When he picks it up, the voice on the other end is his father's.
02:03Son, his father says with a heavy sigh.
02:05I think it's about time I told you that your mother and I are getting a divorce.
02:10James hangs up, unsure what to feel about what he's just heard.
02:13He goes back to sit in the car.
02:16The next person to step up to the plate is...
02:19Well, I don't know how else to say this.
02:21It's you.
02:22Yes, you, watching this right now.
02:25You were in the car with all the others.
02:26Now you're standing at the phone booth, picking up the receiver,
02:29and listening for the voice on the other end.
02:31And in the strangest turn of events, the voice on the other end is me, Dr. Bob,
02:37of the Dr. Bob YouTube channel.
02:38My voice is saying,
02:40Listen, your name.
02:41I know we don't often get to talk, but I can't hold it in any longer.

03:09Next up is Janet, one of the girls.
03:12She volunteers to go next because she's new to this group of friends and is eager to impress.
03:16She takes a deep breath and steps inside.
03:19The phone rings.
03:20She picks it up.
03:22Hello?
03:22She says into the receiver.
03:25Hey, Janet.
03:26The voice on the other end is the voice of Sophie, her best friend since they were kids.
03:31As soon as you left to go to college, I started hooking up with Jason.
03:34Only a few times and I stopped, but I feel really terrible about it.
03:39Janet's face goes red and she slams the phone down.
03:42Jason is the name of her boyfriend, who she hadn't had a chance to talk to in a few months.
03:47The last member of the group to use the phone is Tamara,
03:50another townie who always tries to act tough to impress the boys.
03:54She picks up the receiver.
03:56Hello, Tamara?
03:58Tamara doesn't immediately recognize the voice on the other line.
04:01She asks him,
04:02Who am I speaking to?
04:04I knew your friend, Kate, says the voice.
04:07Before she went missing?
04:09A cold sweat comes over Tamara.
04:11Kate went missing five years ago.
04:13The police had started calling it a cold case.
04:16What do you mean?
04:17She asks.
04:18Why don't you tell me that?
04:20Because I killed her, says the voice.
04:22It's eating me alive.
04:24I had to tell someone.
04:26The voice on the other end describes more details about her friend,
04:29details that he would only know if he was telling the truth.
04:33Tamara can't stand it anymore.
04:34She hangs up the phone and leaves the booth.
04:36The others ask what the phone said, but she doesn't feel like she can tell them.
04:41She walks home, not wanting to stick around any longer than she needs to.
04:44The next day, she reports what she heard to the police,
04:47but is unable to explain how she knew where the killer hid the body.
04:51Stress, tears, fits of rage, and sometimes even relief.
04:55These feelings are standard for anyone interacting with SCP-467, the confessional phone booth.
05:01This anomaly is a seemingly ordinary phone booth that, when entered,
05:05will receive a call from a person the subject knows.
05:08It doesn't matter if they're alive or dead.
05:10In fact, the call seems to be entirely within the subject's head,
05:14as call records confirm that no actual incoming calls ever take place.
05:18During the call, the person on the other line will divulge secrets,
05:22things that the subject receiving the call would have no possible way of knowing.
05:26These secrets range in nature from innocuous to inflammatory to downright sinister in many cases.
05:33When the SCP Foundation first became aware of the confessional phone booth back in the early 90s,
05:38their first course of action to try and stop the occurrences was to simply disconnect the phone.
05:42This worked well enough for a while, but then,
05:45as the new millennium went on and personal cell phones became more and more common,
05:49reports of the haunted phone started to circulate again.
05:53As it turns out, the booth itself, not the phone, was the source of the anomaly.
05:58As long as a person is within the booth,
06:00any personal communication device that they have will become an extension of the booth's psychic influence.
06:06Once this was learned, the booth was removed completely and taken to anomalous artifact storage.
06:11The phone never even has to ring, even though witnesses, including the subject,
06:15will remember a call having taken place.
06:17Analysis of video logs has shown that the subjects never pick up the phone at all.
06:22Despite this, the calls can be picked up via audio recording devices placed inside the booth.
06:28Another limitation that has been discovered about SCP-467 is that it only allows one call per person per day.
06:34If a person who has already spoken to someone through the phone booth steps back into it within 24 hours,
06:40nothing will happen.
06:42Because of the nature of D-Class personnel, many of the tests produced calls of the more inflammatory and salacious
06:48nature.
06:49One D-Class, who had been a repeat violent offender, received a call from his mother.
06:53I'm so ashamed, she was reported as having said through tears.
06:57I feel it must have been my fault that you turned out like this.
07:00I didn't raise you or your brothers right.
07:02After this call, the D-Class was very disturbed, and for a few days asked for permission to call his
07:08family.
07:09He was denied the request.
07:11On the complete opposite side of things, another D-Class who had been on death row for a brutal murder
07:16he'd committed many years ago,
07:17got a call from the family of one of his victims.
07:20The girl's father was the one who did most of the talking.
07:22He told the D-Class that even though they'd never forget what happened,
07:26he felt that someday they would be able to forgive.
07:28It was a strange thing to hear, and the D-Class was notably uncomfortable for the rest of the day.
07:35Another D-Class who had been convicted of assault got a direct call from one of his victims.
07:39She was still alive, and had done a lot of healing since he had attacked her.
07:43She told him that she'd moved to a new city and started a group for women to learn self-defense.
07:48Though the D-Class didn't know how to feel about this call at the time,
07:51he was seen to have improved morale over the next few days.
07:55Not all of the calls were quite so heavy.
07:57One D-Class received a call from a researcher who was present in the room at the moment,
08:01although, of course, this researcher was never witnessed so much as picking up the phone.
08:05Over the call, the researcher told the D-Class that he had an ugly haircut.
08:09The D-Class left the booth and confronted the researcher about it.
08:12The researcher admitted that, yes, he did think the D-Class's haircut was, quote,
08:17pretty stupid.
08:18The D-Class was annoyed at first, but pretty soon everyone was able to have a good laugh about it.
08:24Others weren't quite as lucky.
08:25One D-Class, another convicted murderer, just heard the voice of his victim screaming with
08:30rage for five whole minutes.
08:32Another D-Class heard something that upset him so much that he flew into a violent rage,
08:37punctuated by fits of hysterical sobbing.
08:39We don't know what it is that he heard.
08:41He was impossible to console and had to be terminated after he lashed out at the researcher
08:46conducting the test.
08:48Another D-Class actually received a call from himself when he tested the booth.
08:52This D-Class, who had been involved in a far-right terrorist organization and was on death row
08:57for the assassination of a politician in his home city, heard his own voice on the call
09:01describing repressed homosexual desires.
09:05If I had been more honest about myself, the voice said, maybe I wouldn't have ended up here
09:09in the first place.
09:11This did not go over very well with that particular D-Class, and he immediately tried to destroy
09:16the booth.
09:16His termination by staff followed soon after.
09:20In another instance of the booth speaking to a person in their own voice, for one test,
09:25the researchers used a test subject who had been used for amnestic testing to see what
09:29would happen.
09:29The subject received a call from their own voice, describing details that the subject had forgotten
09:34due to the amnestics.
09:35The subject was confused, and the researchers wondered briefly if this experience would cause
09:40the subject to regain lost memories in the long term.
09:43It did not.
09:44Dr. Reitz, the lead researcher on SCP-467, has also personally tested the booth a number
09:50of times.
09:51It's unsure what the nature of the calls were on any of the occasions.
09:54The first time, the recording equipment was disconnected, and he has been unwilling to
09:58divulge the nature of the call to anyone else.
10:01Whatever the topic of conversation was, however, the other researchers noted that Dr. Reitz became
10:06significantly depressed and expressed doubts about his work at the Foundation that he'd
10:10never voiced previously.
10:12After a few days, though, he seemed to recover.
10:15The second test done by Dr. Reitz was far more concerning.
10:19Recordings picked up the voice of a young child on the other end.
10:22Seemingly as soon as Dr. Reitz recognized the voice, he shut off all recording equipment
10:27and demanded that the test log be completely stricken from the record.
10:31Dr. Iceberg, another senior researcher on the team, had a similar, though less distressing,
10:36experience when he tested the booth.
10:38Much like with Dr. Reitz, the topic of his conversation was not recorded.
10:42We can only assume that it was bad, because two days later, he got into a physical altercation
10:47with another Site-17 researcher and was given a full reprimand.
10:51Some research has suggested that the booth even works on non-human intelligences.
10:56So far, the only other anomaly that has been tested with the booth has been SCP-1599, the
11:02broken spybot.
11:04SCP-1599 received a call from its creator, claiming that they had lost its signal and
11:09were unable to recover it.
11:10However, SCP-1599 flatly denied that this message could have come from its creator, instead
11:16accusing the Foundation scientists of playing a trick on it.
11:20Another interesting piece to the puzzle that is SCP-467, the calls have been observed to get
11:25increasingly bizarre and disturbing close to the American winter holidays, particularly
11:30Thanksgiving and Christmas.
11:32The first recorded instances of subjects receiving calls from their own voices, for example, happened
11:37in early December and late November.
11:39This period is also when calls from deceased people become more frequent.
11:44Even stranger, during the holiday season, there have also been instances of people getting
11:48calls from non-existent people.
11:50In one case, it was simply a voice that the subject didn't recognize, talking about things
11:55that either never happened or happened to someone else.
11:58In another, it was a voice claiming to be the subject's childhood imaginary friend.
12:02The working theory as to why the booth's calls get more unusual during the holidays is that
12:08this is a response to the combination of general high stress levels and increased social pressure
12:13to ignore or downplay interpersonal conflicts, leading to more repressed feelings.
12:18This, however, doesn't entirely explain how the phone booth seems to be occasionally able
12:22to make things up from whole cloth.
12:25It would seem the true nature of the booth is as something that encourages people to be
12:29more honest with each other.
12:30No matter how hard you try to keep secrets from the people around you, the phone booth will
12:34conjure up a version of you who will happily divulge even your deepest, darkest secrets.
12:39But it's unclear if the forces behind this anomaly intended for this to be to our detriment
12:44or our benefit.
12:45Sometimes being told a secret can feel like a weight being lifted off your shoulders.
12:50Other times it leads to chaos, and all you can do is wish you had never heard it.
