SCP-3700 is the designation for a circular area in the North Sea with a diameter of 800 km encompassing the archipelagos of Faroe, Orkney, and Shetland. SCP-3700 has an abnormal depth, with the sea floor located approximately 5 km below the ocean surface, compared to an average of 250-300 m for the rest of the North Sea. SCP-3700 is subject to a wide and varied array of anomalous occurrences due to ritualistic interactions between two entities, which have been designated SCP-3700-1 and SCP-3700-2. Active effects of SCP-3700 are wholly dependent on which entity successfully subdues the other during each ritual. All rituals, with the exception of two consistent dates, take place at random periods of time. SCP-3700-1 and SCP-3700-2 always interact on dates corresponding with the spring and fall equinox of the given year.

00:08It would be the cruise of a lifetime. That's what Derek told all his buddies back in Kansas.
00:13Something about growing up poor in a landlocked state gave you a lifelong yearning for the sea.
00:18Ever since he was a kid, he'd been fascinated by marine life, and now he was on a cruise
00:23specifically designed for sea life nerds like him. After seeing sharks at the Caribbean and
00:29leopard seals at the Arctic, he'd made the long journey across the North Sea until the ship was
00:33lingering off the coast of Scotland, in the liminal space between the Faroe Islands, Orkney,
00:38and Shetland. The bracing wind blowing in off the ocean was breathtaking, and it made him feel more
00:44alive than he'd ever been before. Which was ironic, given, well, let's not give it away.
00:51There was a crackling over the ship's PA system, interference, typical in the more strenuous areas
00:56they'd been visiting. This time, when he heard the captain's voice, he couldn't help but detect a
01:01hint of caution in the man's voice.
01:03Attention passengers, he said. No need to be alarmed, but I've gotten word of an approaching storm front.
01:10Expect some wind, some rain, and some choppy waters, but I'll see that we make it through already.
01:16Derek would have hoped that the captain's words would comfort him, but he felt this strange,
01:20uneasy acidity in the pit of his stomach. After traveling all these thousands of miles,
01:26he would have been mortified to experience a rash of seasickness now.
01:30We'll, uh, let you know if there are any changes, the captain said before the speaker crackled out.
01:37In both a metaphorical and literal sense, a dark cloud seemed to hang over the rest of the day.
01:42Derek would stand on the deck sometimes, staring up at what seemed like a dark wall of cloud creeping
01:47towards them, across the frigid North Sea waters. He'd read books on old sailors as a kid, and
01:53remembered how superstitious they all used to be. Everything was a grim omen of this or that,
01:58a bell that foretold death. It was a reminder of the eternal fact that the sea is the seat of
02:04all
02:04power on Earth. It could take your life and the lives of thousands of others without sparing a single
02:09thought for you in the process. As the day crept on, conditions didn't improve. The sky was dark,
02:16even though it was only mid-afternoon. The distant pall of the storm had enveloped the boat now,
02:22like some nautical horror story. There were nervous murmurs among the other passengers now,
02:27saying that there hadn't been any forecast of a storm like this on the waters today.
02:31Something was wrong here, very wrong. But in a storm like this, the only way out was through.
02:38Lightning strikes split the sky. The water looked black out the windows, like some vision of hell.
02:43Still, it was hypnotic. While others descended below deck, Derek still stood above, watching,
02:50taking in this thing that had been a distant fantasy for so long now, rolling and roiling in
02:55front of him. A world of infinite secrets. And then he saw something move beneath the waves.
03:03Derek's breath caught in his throat, and he stepped back. Was it some trick of the light?
03:08The shape he saw beneath the waves was huge, unimaginably huge. Not shark huge, not even whale
03:14huge. Something in a whole other class. He stepped away from the window, unable to form the words he
03:20needed to describe what he'd just seen. But he was suddenly aware that he needed to get off this boat
03:25if he wanted to live. But was that even possible now, here in the thick of it? Before he could
03:32even
03:32finish the thought, he heard screaming from others on the boat. All it took him was a slight turn to
03:37the
03:37left to see why. Out in the dark clouds and the fog, he saw a shape rising, an impossible bioluminescent
03:45glow radiating off of it. This huge serpentine thing, weaving through the air with incredible
03:51size and weight. It was a tentacle. A giant, grasping tentacle, bigger than any known animal on
03:58earth. It whipped through the air, and then descended back beneath the surface of the sea,
04:02taking any hope Derek had left with it. And then, the eye opened. It had to be the size of
04:10a car at
04:10least, this giant glowing eye beneath the waves, dilating to take in what must have seemed like a
04:16pitiful sailing vessel. If that was the size of the eye, then what the hell was the size of the
04:21creature beneath? At this point, he must have been wishing that he'd never gone on this life-changing
04:26trip, and instead just remained home and watched the incredible videos right here on the Dr. Bob
04:31YouTube channel. If you subscribe to Dr. Bob, you won't be attacked by any giant monsters at sea.
04:36Instead, you'll just be able to enjoy videos covering everything from the SCP Foundation
04:40to the back rooms. Subscribe before, like Derek, it's too late. Do you really want to take the chance?
04:47Back in the chaos of the North Sea, the captain must have actually realized what was going on,
04:52and desperately started turning the ship away, fighting the wind in what seemed like a growing
04:56whirlpool in the dark waters. But as the ship powered ahead, Derek noticed more of those
05:01building-sized tentacles rising out of the depths. They were everywhere, the sheer size of this
05:06oceanic monstrosity. They must have been right on top of it. More screams rang out across the ship
05:13as impacts hit the side of the hull, rattling everything and knocking Derek to the ground.
05:19Something must have struck them at incredible speed, and before Derek could react, the entire boat
05:24began to shake and sway until what seemed like a giant, bloody red human arm ascended over the
05:30side of the ship. It was a sight that not even Derek's worst nightmares could have conjured,
05:35an obsidian ocean surrounded by dark mist, with glowing tentacles the size of skyscrapers rising
05:41out of the murk, and monstrous, skinned men climbing over the edges onto the deck, a horror on every axis.
05:48Derek felt like it was some cosmic punishment on him for his curiosity leading him here,
05:52but that wasn't true. The truth is, the thing that would kill Derek would never even know he existed
05:59at all. The ocean seemed to open up beneath the boat, giving way to some black void surrounded by
06:06teeth the size of phone booths, and then the whole thing was falling into the dark, where it would remain
06:13forevermore. This is roughly how it would pan out to be a civilian who's unlucky enough to encounter
06:19SCP-3700 in full effect. But as much as I hate to sound flippant about the lives of everyone on
06:25that
06:26cruise ship, a group of people dying on one unfortunate vessel is really nothing compared
06:30to the true potential horrors of this anomaly, if the Foundation doesn't consistently intervene.
06:35And as you're about to discover, what Derek saw from the deck of his cruise ship was only one sliver
06:40of the full insanity at play here. Technically speaking, 3700 is the anomalous designation for
06:47an 800-kilometer circular area in the North Sea, clustered in the proximity of the Faroe Islands,
06:52Orkney, and Shetland. In this area, the ocean is five kilometers deep, rather than just a few hundred
06:58meters. And after hearing our opening case study, you're probably wondering, what exactly is being
07:03kept in all that extra space? And I'll give you the answer in the simplest manner possible.
07:08It's the two primary combatants of the greatest war the other has ever known.
07:13Several times every year, a battle is fought in the SCP-3700 zone that has implications for thousands
07:19of human lives. A ritualized spat between two massive entities that the SCP Foundation has nicknamed
07:26Homer and Angie. To understand just how important this eternally repeating battle is,
07:31we're going to need to meet our two contestants. In this corner is Homer, also known as SCP-3700-1.
07:39It's a giant, six-kilometer-long arthropod not dissimilar to a lobster, with a green shell and a complex
07:45matrix of pigments on its back that form the vague impression of a human-female face. It has six
07:51massive prehensile limbs, the first two of which are equipped with massive clubs, like that of the
07:56mantis shrimp. It also has four large orange compound eyes, which are capable of firing out
08:02massive rays of pure gamma radiation, more powerful than any conventional weapon humanity has ever
08:07known. The entity is also so powerful that he can dissipate storms with his actions, turning hurricanes
08:13to clear skies on a whim. And we should be profoundly relieved that he's on our side. That's right, Homer
08:21has
08:21shown a general affinity for humanity, and has cooperated with the Foundation's efforts to assist
08:26him in the endless fight of his life. This fight, crucially, has taken much more of a toll on Homer
08:31than it has on anyone or anything else. His shell is covered in scars, with some large holes exposing
08:37his soft tissue underneath. Homer was also considerably larger a century ago, but over time, his endless war
08:44has been one of attrition, taking away components of his body that he's had to heal around. With a creature
08:49this large and impossible, you're likely already pondering on the next question. What kind of entity
08:55could possibly have wounded something like Homer? Well, meet Angie. Technically, you already did, as did
09:01Derek, and he's not here anymore. That's because, unlike Homer, Angie is very much not a fan of humanity,
09:07and if she continues to win her battle with Homer long term, then we're all going to be in trouble.
09:12So what is Angie? She's effectively a giant gulper eel with some serious modifications. How giant?
09:19Is a current length of 32 kilometers, several times larger than Homer, good enough for you?
09:24It's an unimaginably huge entity, from her three kilometer long mouth to the bladed tip on the end
09:30of her tail. And unlike regular eels, you know, the ones smaller than a stretch of highway, Angie has
09:36additional articulation, with 13 huge prehensile tentacles emerging along her body. While her body is
09:42jet black, it's also covered in complex bioluminescent patches, which form the crude shape of a human male
09:48face on Angie's flank. In addition to all of the natural frightening side effects that would come
09:53with its physical attributes, Angie also has the ability to brew up whirlpools and catastrophic
09:58swarms by moving the length of her body. She can also breathe a huge jet of blue flame from her
10:03massive mouth, and is capable of spawning instances of SCP-3456, also known as the Orcadian Horseman.
10:10For anyone not familiar with these, I apologize in advance for the nightmares my explanations may cause
10:16here. For centuries they've been known as the Naklavi on the Orkney Islands, horrific skinned
10:21centaur creatures, human from the waist up and horse from the waist down. They've been described as
10:27the nastiest of all the demons of Scotland's Northern Isles, and for good reason. These horrific
10:32monsters often manifest at the sights of violent tragedies to prey on the innocent, immune to
10:36conventional weapons, and more than eager to mete out death and torture to anyone unlucky enough to fall
10:42into their clutches. So when you consider that Angie regularly gives birth to these things,
10:47you start to understand why people might interpret her as the harbinger of the apocalypse, and in
10:51furtherance of this, why the Foundation have decided to act almost like the pit crew for Homer in this
10:56recurring battle. One thing that is always certain is that the two will rise and battle to death or
11:02submission on the nights of the spring and fall equinoxes, where the win or loss would dictate a
11:07number of major events for the area. While these knights are the only ones when fights are certain,
11:12they can technically rise up from the depths and begin to fight at any time. It's effectively an
11:17incredible aquatic kaiju battle, where the monsters wrestle in the waves in the midst of an insane storm
11:22until only one remains, only for the loser to resurrect for the next battle. People who have witnessed it
11:28firsthand and survived have attested to the fact that nothing has ever compared. They describe epic scenes
11:34of those 13 monstrous glowing tentacles wrapping around Homer's exoskeleton. The epic crashing sound of
11:40Homer's club-like forelegs firing forward with a strength that humanity's most powerful firearm
11:45couldn't even hope to replicate, smashing Angie's terrible jaw off of its hinges. Then for the tide to
11:51change when Angie released a terrible gout of flame from her gaping mouth and fry Homer directly in the
11:56face as his many prehensile legs scraped against the monster's slippery skin for any kind of purchase.
12:02The witnesses describe hundreds of Orcadian horsemen galloping across Homer's shell and
12:07clawing through the gaps at his flesh, only for the gamma beams of Homer's eyes to reduce them to
12:12burnt, tumorous masses floating in the water around him. Godzilla would be proud of such an incredible
12:17giant monster-on-giant-monster standoff. But to really be invested in any battle, you need to
12:22understand the stakes. What happens if Homer wins one of these battles, and what happens if Angie takes
12:27the dub instead? If Homer successfully subdues Angie with his crustacean clubs and gamma rays,
12:33then the storms that have brood around the battle will immediately dissipate, regardless of any
12:37meteorological conditions outside the 800-kilometer SCP-3700 range. A Homer victory will also be a boon
12:44for local ocean life, because Angie's defeat appears to lead to a huge reproductive boom for sea life in the
12:50surrounding area. The reproductive boom is so large that the Foundation needs to enact some controlled
12:56culls to prevent dead zones from marine overpopulation. And a slight downside, coastal erosion of the
13:02surrounding coastlines increased by a factor of five. Can't win them all. But what happens if Angie
13:08wins them all? That's a very different story. For starters, weather in the infected area will be
13:13nightmarish, with storms ranging from Category 1 to 5, as well as temperature fluctuations that can take
13:19the temperature well below zero. This makes for extremely dangerous conditions for everyone on these
13:24islands. In the months following Angie's victory, sea travel in the area will be almost impossible,
13:29which will make transporting food and other essentials to the island extremely difficult.
13:33Though of course, throughout human history, desperation has often had its way of forcing
13:38people into dangerous waters. And there's a particular reason why the people on these islands
13:43might feel desperate. The turbulent conditions caused by Angie's victory will force sea life out of
13:48the area, while also sparking a wave of livestock disease across the island's shores. High winds,
13:54oversaturated soil, and a lack of sunlight will also lead to crops dying off en masse, which will lead
13:59to even greater states of hunger and desperation across the island. But there's something even more
14:04frightening than all of this as a result of Homer's failure to subdue Angie. Angie won't leave.
14:10Yes, if Homer can't stop Angie, then Angie will just stick around for weeks, or potentially even months,
14:16until Homer returns. In that time, Angie will be free to prowl the waves and hunt for any vessels
14:21unlucky enough to sail through the creature's territory. All of these consequences will endure,
14:26plus greater numbers of attacks from the Orcadian horsemen. All this to say, it will seriously affect
14:31the lives of thousands of people, as well as a huge number of complex ecosystems, if the Foundation
14:36didn't intervene to ensure that Homer pretended this was baseball and gave them a Homer. With battles of
14:42this sheer magnitude going on, it's natural to ask how exactly the Foundation can possibly put their
14:48finger on the scale. The answer is, they can try their very best. It takes some of the most
14:53resource-intensive containment procedures of any anomaly in the entire SCP Foundation catalog.
14:58They have a massive fleet permanently stationed in the 800-kilometer SCP-3700 area, known as Foundation
15:05Naval Task Force Delta-7, and codenamed Northern Storm. This task force consists of two refurbished
15:12battleships, 13 destroyers, five cruisers, and 15 smaller support craft, and manning these ships are
15:18some of the most well-paid jobs on the Foundation roster due to the danger money attached. These
15:23ships will guide Homer to the epicenter of the zone when a battle begins, ensuring that he isn't taken
15:28by surprise when Angie attacks. They also provide supplemental combat support, using the multiple
15:33powerful laser cannons as well as conventional weapons that have been retrofitted onto them. These
15:38weapons will do little more than merely wound to Angie in a combat situation, but in some of the
15:42closer battles, the distraction provided by these wounds has turned the tides of war in Homer's favor,
15:47and guaranteed safety for both the Foundation staff and the Islanders. And of course, they also assist
15:53in keeping this whole affair concealed from the wider world. One of their key methods for doing this
15:57was implanting Homer with 32 large-scale Donovan holoprojectors, which produce a hologram that would
16:03make Homer, to an untrained observer, appear to be nothing more than an innocent pod of humpback whales.
16:08The wider actions of the containment team on SCP-3700 exist under two protocol umbrellas,
16:14Protocol Winter Maelstrom and Protocol Tumult. Winter Maelstrom is for the standard engagements
16:19between Homer and Angie. In these cases, they fire harpoons at Angie in order to help secure her in
16:24place, hopefully making it easier for Homer to attack. They're also instructed to encircle her during
16:29the fight, periodically firing barrages of lasers in order to harm and disorient the monster. If none of this
16:35works and Homer is defeated, then Protocol Tumult is the backup plan. Under Protocol Tumult,
16:41they'll evacuate all naval and civilian staff within the 800-mile radius. They'll reroute trade
16:46and ferry routes to the islands for a period of no less than six months, keep attempting to fight off
16:50and subdue Angie and the Orcadian horsemen that she produces, and beef up land defenses on the shores
16:55of the island. Because while the great Ken Watanabe once wisely said, let them fight, sometimes your
17:01fighter really needs a little extra help in their corner. The sea can be an incredibly dangerous
17:07place, with or without anomalous activity. The two best things you can do are have a healthy respect
17:13for her power and knowledge of the threat that awaits you. Check out SCP-2846, The Squid and
17:19The Sailor, so you never go to the ocean unprepared.
