00:00The Court of Appeal has allowed the Malaysian Bar to intervene in a lawyer's appeal,
00:06challenging notices issued by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission
00:09for information and documents relating to a client under investigation.
00:14A three-member bench chaired by Justice Azizul Azmi Adnan
00:19granted the Bar's application despite objections from the Attorney General.
00:23Azizul said the Malaysian Bar, as the statutory regulator of the legal profession,
00:28had sufficient interest in the issues raised,
00:32particularly those involving solicitor-client privilege and the protection of lawyers.
00:37The appeal was filed by lawyer Mahajof Singh after the High Court dismissed his bid
00:42to challenge two MACC notices issued in November last year.
00:47The notices were issued as part of investigations involving his client, businessman Albert Day.
00:53In the High Court, Mahajof argued that the notices were unlawful and breached solicitor-client privilege
01:00under the MACC Act and the Evidence Act.
01:03However, the High Court ruled that the notices were part of MACC's investigative powers
01:09and could not be challenged through judicial review.
01:12The Court of Appeal has fixed the appeal for hearing on November 3.
