17:21undergoing treatment for severe burns in katmandu days earlier ride sharing driver ganesh nepali died
17:27after setting himself ablaze following a confrontation with katmandu metropolitan police over parking
17:33enforcement another man ashwinth raut also succumbed to burn injuries after a separate self-immolation
17:41attempt the incidents have sent shock waves across the country and raised fears of copycat tragedies
17:50but these deaths have become much more than isolated tragedies for many young nepalese they symbolize
17:56a government that has stopped listening the irony is striking balen shah built his political career by
18:03presenting himself as the anti-establishment candidate he promised transparency accountability and a new
18:09style of governance now many of the same young people who believed in that promise say he has
18:15become part of the very system he wants challenged ganesh nepali's death sparked large demonstrations
18:22across katmandu hundreds of protesters many of them young people and members of the gen z movement
18:28that once backed shah marched demanding justice accountability and an independent investigation
18:35ride-sharing drivers student groups and civil society organizations accused authorities of excessive
18:42enforcement punitive fines and administrative apathy many protesters also demanded that prime minister balen
18:49shah resign this is what makes these protests politically significant governments often face opposition
18:57protests but it is far more damaging when the anger comes from your own support base the movement
19:04that once celebrated balen shah as nepal's political future is now openly questioning his leadership the
19:11chance have changed the hope has turned into frustration and the generation that made him a national leader
19:17is now leading the protests against him the backlash has reached nepal's parliament opposition lawmakers
19:25accused the government of failing to prevent the tragedy and mishandling its response one mp urged balen
19:31shah to take off his dark glasses and face the people others argued that the state had failed to protect
